part of ran organizational effort that took to Europe several weeks ago and one that will wind up in a proposal for NFL owners to consider next month in a league meet mg The Worldwide league would be run entirely separately from the but would be owned primarily by NFL team owners World wide franchises would be sold to local owners The Carolinas area is one of several being considered for teams that are also in the running for an NFL expansion franchise if the league decides as to add two teams in the 1990s The tentative plan for the spring league calls for 12 teams playing in three divisions four in one European division in a season that would go from early April to early Schramm's group was scheduled to stay overnight in Charlotte meeting with Mayor Sue Myrick officials of the Charlotte Chamber and representatives of two potential ownership groups seeking an expansion team for the Carolinas Schramm planned to discuss the spring league Thursday night with Mark Richardson Mike McCormack and Max Muhleman representing a group headed by Spartanburg's Jerry Richardson He is lo have breakfast today with My1ick and Chamber officials tho Meet with George Shinn and Walter Council representing Shinn's group before leaving town The possibility of having a Worldwide team in the Carolinas brings with it a variety of major 'questions that will have to be answered in a hurry if Schramm is to meet the timetable he wants to meet and quicIdy have a plan ready for NFL consideration Still to be answered Schramm said are Ouestions on the cost of a franchise availability of a stadium and the potential for strong fan appeal No question is bigger for the Richardson and Shinn groups however than the one on expansion and what the operation of a Spring team could do to their Chances "It would be totally overlooking human nature to say the success of a team in this league would not have a bearing on that" Schramm Said "Obviously lack of success pould also have an effect But someone who does well with the new league is going to have a leg up" Schramm said no decisions would be made during this visit "We'll come away with some strong impressions that's what we're looking for" he said "We're just trying to gather the attitude of the people in the community the business leaders' the solidarity and the level of interest "The number one priority in this is fan support We're looking for cities that are going to have fans that's the most important ingredient the enthusiasm of the fans in the stands" Schramm and his group were net at the airport by Mark Richttrdson McCormack and Muhleman "We really don't know enough yet to have an opinion" Richardson said "Two of the most important things we need to ask about lire the cost factor and how this tvpuld affect us on our (expansion) goal" Trial Leaves Key Questions By HENRY EICHEL Columbia Bureau COLUMBIA It took a US District jury an hour and 40 minutes to acquit Tom Gadd South Carolina's former defensive coordinator of charges he was part of a ring supplying illegal steroids to the Gamecocks' football players But questions about what went on during much of the late Joe Morrison's coaching tenure won't be answered so quickly Among the parties interested in the answers is the NCAA which' has prohibited the use of steroids by college athletes since 1986 and which has always prohibited coaches from giving athletes extra free benefits If the NCAA finds South Carolina committed serious rules violations the university could face the NCAA's most severe penalty If any of a school's teams commit serious violations twice within five years the team committing the second violation will have its scheduled canceled for a year The school's basketball program is on probation for violations involving the sale of players' complimentary tickets and players' unauthorized use of automobiles But NCAA enforcement director Dave Berst said Thursday he isn't sure whether what happened on the football team between 1984-87 is South Carolina's responsibility or strictly the fault of coaches and players none of whom are still at the school "At this point I'm really not certain where those lines are drawn" Berst said "Chemical use problems are not issues that we have much experience in" nEMIIM 50" WIDE SCREEN TV WITH OAK CABINET AND SLIDE AWAY DOORS mnsuBsla 1 I Hiri VIDEO CASSETTE
