12D THE CHARLOTTE OBSERVER Sunday September 3 1989 College Football NO a III NC State-Maryland Hoopla Better Than Game p1 k4f Tom 111 Sorensen Maryland 35 as the clock got down to two seconds Time-out Wolfpack With one second left Damon Hartman who had missed from 27 yards hit from 45 The field goal was immediately followed by one of those statements that makes college football great Running off field Wolfpack defensive tackle Ray Agnew announced to the offense: "That's all we need" But fans needed more It has been almost six months since the Wolfpack had won a big game That was when the basketball team beat Iowa in the NCAA tournament Then it lost to Georgetown in a game that went bad after a terrible call against Wolfpack guard Chris Corchiani That's how the basketball season ended and little has gone right for the Wolfpack since The chancellor quit under fire The basketball coach lost his athletic director's job and wrecked his reputation The school took more good shots than an op field in the last three minutes for the win- ning touchdown Not again Agnew is praying Not again The fans are no longer talking about the weather They have seen the Wolfpack drive 80 yards in 12 plays most of them pin-point brazen passes to go ahead 10-0 They have seen Maryland on the posses- sion before this one drive 80 yards to cut the lead to 10-6 Now they have seen Maryland take the ball at its 37 with one minute 39 seconds to play and move to the Wolfpack 17 The fans are drained They have stood and whistled and begged "Clock tick!" a student screams And now the ball is in the air and Barry Johnson is in the right corner of the end zone And he appears to be alone "I thought we lost" said tailback Bar-' bour watching from the edge of the Then cornerback Barry Anderson slips over and knocks the ball into the air It hangs there then falls to the grass The season is under way ponent of Mike Tyson Saturday was supposed to be a coming out Saturday was a day to cheer as the country's No 24-ranked football team led by cleaner-than-a-baby Dick Sheridan charged onto the grass beneath an arch of red and white Great expectations Boring game A first-half field goal fling might have been enough for Agnew and the defense but fans needed more evidence that the 1989 college football season really was here They got it With three seconds left there was Maryland quarterback Neil O'Donnell dropping back and seeing split end Barry Johnson open in the right corner of the end zone The Terps trail 10-6 If Johnson catches the pass the Terps win No longer is senior tackle Ray Agnew saying "That's all we need" Ray Agnew is now yelling "Last year! Last year!" Last year Maryland drove down the RALEIGH The NC State players ran onto the field beneath an arch of red and white balloons The majorettes twirled batons The kids all of them little and cute played catch with red and white Footballs The fans stood hand on heart For their alma mater The buildup had been great But the pme was lacking NC State and Maryland had been olaying football for more than an hour low and almost nothing had happened A good hits A missed field goal A couole runs Wolfpack tailback Anthony Bar-)our almost broke But that was it Watches were checked The temperature being 87 degrees people 'alked about the weather The teams noved from one side of the field to the )ther but only threatened to move forvard The buildup had been huge But the ame seemed to be getting smaller NC State would go on to win 10-6 and he 41780 fans at Carter-Finley Stadium vould go home nervous but happy The ecord must show however that with 34 seconds left in the first half Wolfpack fans booed their team They were entitled As the first half moved to a close the Wolfpack had the ball at its 20 It ran up the middle Gain of 2 It tried again a little to the right Gain of Boo went the fans the Terrapins on sn 80-yard drive ending in Ricky lohnson's 1-yard touchdown run Nith three minutes 21 seconds left in the game Coach Joe Kdvak chose to go for a two-point conversion hoping to cut NC State's lead to two and set up a possible game-winning field goal But Johnson was stopped short leaving NC State bead 10-6 The Wolfpack offense was unsble to gain a first down on its ensuing possession and punted the all away to Maryland O'Donnell took over with 1:39 remaining 67 yards to go and no timeouts left "I love situations like that" O'Donnell said "I told the whole Dffense to keep a positive attitude that we'd done it before and let's do it again There's nothing I like Setter than having the ball in my aands having to make big plays" He moved the Terrapins down-field like a master Completions of 4 15 and 4 yards moved the ball to the NC State 40 Then three plays resulted in nothing and he faced fourth-and-6 And he calmly delivered completing a I7-yard screen pass to tailback Bren Lowery With 16 seconds left Maryland was 23 yards from a touchdown An incompletion a 6-yard pass JEFF SINERStaft NC State defenders Jesse Campbell (42) and Lee Knight stop Maryland drive but I take things like that as a challenge" Anderson said "You have to want that kind of pressure to be a defensive back There's nobody behind you backing you up You're the last hope You have to "It's just like rolling dice in times like that" said NC State coach Dick Sheridan "Obviously it got kind of hairy" In the end the line between victory and defeat was ever so fine "It was a great pass it hit me right in the fingertips" said Maryland's Barry Johnson "I had it but then their cornerback (Anderson) came up and tipped it away "For me it's a very empty feeling You're talking about my hands here and you're talking about the game I feel like I've let everyone down" NC State's winning points came on its only sustained possession of the day The key plays in the third-quarter 80-yard Tony Mauney recovered it in the end zone While Clemson's passing of fense often stunned with its effectiveness its usually overpowering running game stalled The Tigers: were without leading rusher Terry- Allen suspended for one game after being charged with driving under the influence but Ford said there were other problems Such as the blocking of the offensive line "Terry runs hard" Ford said "I' don't know if I would have wanted him out there with the way we were blocking" The Tigers gained 167 yards passing 155 on the ground "I'm going to give our team benefit of the doubt and guess or running game will improve" Ford said "We're going to start working on it immediately We're going to-- start working on it Sunday morning" Does this mean we won't be seeing much more "Air Clemson?" Furman's most sustained drive was a five-play drive in the second quarter Net gain: 9 yards Other than the fumble recovery Furman didn't cross into Clemson territory The Paladins defending NCAA Division I-AA champions managed 58 yards of total offense along with three first downs Nine times the Paladins were tagged for losses by the Tigers defense "This is probably one of the worst offensive games we've ever had" Furman coach Jimmy Satterfield said "But that was due primarily to Clemson's fine defense Their outside linebackers are probably the best we've ever faced" Despite Clemson's smothering effort the spotlight of the game the opener for both teams was on Clemson's quarterbacks And on whom Clemson coach Danny Ford would start Ford promised he wouldn't make a decision between two candidates senior Chris Morocco and sophomore DeChane Cameron until game day Moments before kickoff the public address announcer reading the starting lineup said "And at quarterback Morocco or Cameron" In the end Ford decided on Morocco for the start although as he promised both quarterbacks played Morocco completed eight of 14 passes for 99 yards and Cameron was six for six for 67 yards "I didn't know I was going to start until a minute before the game started" Morocco said "Until then I was up in the air" Morocco wasn't the only thing in the air When the game started in perhaps the most stunning series at Clemson in a long time Morocco threw on four of the Tigers' first six plays For a Danny Ford-coached team known for power running on virtually every play this is as likely as Ford himself starting at quarterback "We had planned to open up and throw deep" Ford said "We wanted to try and keep them off us" Clemson didn't score on that possession And the next time the Tigers got the ball it was back to Win Over I run (Driver kick) Pyzik 37 14 run Driver kick) Concord 10 Mars Hill 7 Randy Hart tossed a 7-yard pass to Brian Hamm with a minute left in the third quarter to lead Concord (WVa) over visiting Mars Hill Barry Barilsford's 67-yard punt return set up the winning points Anthony Galloway scored the only touchdown for Mars Hill on a 1-yard run in the first quarter Carson-Newman 44 Fairmont State 0 Todd Henderson rushed for three touchdowns and CarsonNewman's veer offense overwhelmed Fairmont State's defensive line as the NAIA's No I team scored a rout in the opener at Fairmont Va MEAC Continued From Page ID "Harold Green made some great plays" Woods said The Gamecocks needed them They led early then fell behind in the second quarter But South -AF4t- Carolina came 4- up with 10 1 -z points in the 1 last four min- utes of the 44 sec- A41t ond period ex- tended the mar- s4 gin to 14 in the third quarter and didn't allow Green the Blue Devils any more points until the game's final minute Two of Green's "great plays" came in the game's opening minutes After Ray's first pass was intercepted by Robert Gibson South Carolina started its first drive from the 50 It took only two plays to reach the end zone Green ripped around left end for 8 yards on the first one then went right broke free from Shane Montgomery to Mike Kavulic and Chris Corders Anthony Barbour who led all rushers with 70 yards on I 9 carries scored on a 7-yard run with 3:03 left in the third period Montgomery started at quarterback and is penciled in to stay there all season as Sheridan announced plans to redshirt backup Charles Davenport NC State held on mainly because of a defense that forced four eat uke Carolina lead with 2:46 to play in the first period The Blue Devils then produced their most impressive drive of the night moving 61 yards in seven plays to score on fullback Randy Cuthbert's 2-yard run with 14:55 remaining in the second Ray had an I8-yard completion to Dave Colonna on the second play of the series then got a boost from a pass interference call on Keith McDonald at the South Carolina 15 On the next play Ray set up the touchdown with a I3-yard pass to Randy Jones Duke held the lead for a while but that was to be all the points the Blue Devils could come up with until the game's final 49 seconds when Ray and Hines teamed up for a touchdown and a two-point conversion In the meantime the Gamecocks seized control first with Green's 1-yard touchdown run with 3:58 left in the second period then with 28-yard field goal with 0:27 remaining in the quarter That gave the Gamecocks a 20-13 advantage that stood at half ence victory at VW VW took a 16-7 lead with five minutes 41 seconds left in the third quarter Wade Hawkins kicked his third field goal of the afternoon on a drive set up by a VW fumble recovery at East Tennessee's 35-yard line But the Buccaneers came back on the ensuing possession and scored in a 10-play 54-yard drive capped by George Searcy's 3-yard touchdown East Tennessee's winning drive was set up by a VIVI!
