some confidence but he gained valuable time to practice on grass "I have never had more reason to be as confident than this year with my play" said Lendl last week "Winning here helps and I think I have a reasonable chance of winning Wimbledon" Like Lendl Graf was humbled at the French Open "It took me three days to get over Paris It certainly was not easy" said Graf whose string of five consecutive Grand Slam tournaments was broken by Sanchez in a dramatic three-set final "Last year I arrived here with everyone asking me whether I would do the Grand Slam Now I don't have that kind of pressure I'm far more relaxed and it's easier playing Wimbledon this year This time last year I had never won the championship" Chang and Sanchez the most unlikely duo to win a Grand Slam tournament Not all tennis courts are created equal The surfaces vary considerably which affects the way the ball bounces Which affects the way you play Here's how the most common surfaces on the pro circuit vary: Grass: It's used at Wimbledon and in a few lead-in tournaments Similar to golf greens this fast surface makes the ball skid low players such is Ivan Lend! They're made of concrete asphalt or synthetics Clay: This slow granular surface is used at the French and Italian opens It favors a baseliner such as Chris Evert because balls sit up negating the pace of strong serves Indoor: At the Masters and Virginia Slims Championships in New York a carpet is laid on top of cement The fastest surface it favors serve-and-volleyers and erratic bounces increase as the grass is worn It favors serve-andvolleyers such as Boris Becker and John McEnroe because the spin on a serve increases when the ball hits the court and because volleying decreases the risk of hitting an erratically bouncing ball Hard: These surfaces are used at the US Open Australian Open and Lipton International Players Championships They're medium to slow surfaces good for all-court If Rusty had come out of the pits where I did he would have won the race" Wallace's crew chief Barry Dodson confessed he had placed the jack improperly as the team changed left-side tires during the last pit stop costing several positions Wallace thought the jack had broken "Our car just got very loose because of a bad set of tires" said Wallace who led 131 laps to 43 for Elliott "Then the jack broke Except for those two things I think we'd have been in the lead at the end by a long shot" The outcome enabled Wallace to pull within 122 points of standings leader Dale Earnhardt a gain of 68 on the 17th-place finisher Waltrip gained 58 to trail by 149 "We pulled too high a gear" said Waltrip "It's my fault I picked it We didn't have enough power especially off the fourth turn" Elliott who earned $71450 averaged 139023 mph as five caution periods covering 25 laps slowed the pace One yellow was for a crash that sent former Automobile Racing Club of America champion Bill Venturini to an Ann Arbor hospital with head neck and chest injuries of undetermined severity A hospital spokesman reported the driver alert and talking and Wallace pitted for four fresh tires each while Waltrip gambling stayed on the track When the green shown on Lap 190 Waltrip was the leader with Rudd Marlin Pao and Cope be- tween him and Elliott fifth in line Wallace 1 401 was positioned eighth for the Age-tv restart It appeared that Waltrip's tiC-0 strategy might score as Elliott and Wallace Elliott momentarily became tangled in traffic But when Elliott broke free he began gaining rapidly on Waltrip Fans stood waving on the driver who had rolled to six previous victories on the home track of team owner Harry Melling including a streak of five straight Elliott passed Waltrip for the lead on Lap 193 and kept right on motoring in the No 9 red and white Thunderbird to win without a challenge Wallace passed Waltrip on Lap 198 for second "I was concerned about fighting through the traffic I got held up by a couple cars" said Elliott snapping at 19 races a nonwinning string dating to last October "I'm realistic and I didn't know about catching Darrell but I came up through the field pretty good "Rusty had been running so how good we were Somebody tell me what I've got to do to finish a race? Maybe drive the pace car" Instead of a possible top-five finish Petty placed 30th Winston Cup points standings leader Dale Earnhardt never appeared a threat to win in part because he twice pitted before yellow flags showed costing him laps to rivals who had the luxury of stopping under caution And also because his crew changed the gear ratio in the Chevy Lumina before the start "Everything we did was wrong today" lamented Earnhardt who finished 17th and lost 68 points to Rusty Wallace 58 to Darrell Waltrip and leads them by 122 and 149 respectively "That's part of racing We'll just have to run better next week" Said team owner Richard Childress: "The changes we made this morning didn't work We'd still have had a top 10 finish but we let Dale run out of gas which cost us more than anything else" Ken Schrader's hopes of "skinning" Unocal for $91200 by winning the race from the pole were foiled by an equalized tire When that happened on Lap 103 Schrader had to pit his Chevy under the green flag for all four tires because it was impossible to tell which one had failed He was in the pits 30 seconds and lost a lap which he never regained Schrader finished 12th and instead of $150000 plus he earned $16900 Wallace had a "hot" run in finishing second in more ways than one A fan mounted in his car to keep the floorboard cool broke and the blade hit Wallace in the right shin Then the floor of his Pontiac got hot and overheated his right foot By TOM HIGGINS Staff Writer BROOKLYN Mich It looked like old times in the Miller 400 at Michigan International Speedway on Sunday with defending NASCAR Winston Cup champion Bill Elliott winning for the first time in eight months ts64doc It looked like older -Vollatq times with Richard Petty the 200-race winner and seven-time champion running competitively again Petty who'll be 52 on July 2 charged as high as koriyol' fourth place late in the l'of race causing the crowd dr' to stir in anticipation tt Petty hasn't won since Pe 1984 and his best finish this season had been 15th It appeared something special was going to happen as Petty's Pontiac battled strongly with Ricky Rudd's Buick for fifth place on Lap 171 of the 200-lapper And then Petty's car trailed smoke then flame burst from beneath it as the fans groaned The famous No 43 slid sideways but Petty masterfully controlled it The race however was over for him as so many have been recently "I knew the thing was going to come apart because it had been vibrating for 50 laps or so" said Petty "I knew it was on fire I could feel the heat on my left knee I wanted to set the extinguishers off but I had to keep my hands on the steering wheel The fire put itself Out "I wasn't surprised we were running that good We just didn't run long enough to see.
