GLENNON Staff Writer SPARTANBURG One game into the 1989 season the Gastonia Rangers are 100 improved over last season The Rangers opened their South Atlantic League Class A season with a 3-1 come-from-behind victory over the Spartanburg Phi on Thursday night One year ago the Rangers opened their season when they lost to Spartanburg en route to a last-place finish in the league "It's good to get the first one early" said Gastonia manager Orlando Gomez who also managed the team in 1988 "We stayed in the game the whole way They knew they could win the game and they never quit" The Rangers' big gun Thursday was their youngest player 17- year-old catcher Ivan Rodriguez playing in his first professional game Rodriguez who had three hits in four at-bats played a key role in Gastonia's seventh-inning rally when the Rangers scored two runs to take the lead Teammate Tony Berry was on second base after a two-out double when Rodriguez doubled to left-center to tie the score at 1 Rangers right fielder Jim McCutchen followed with a single to put the Rangers up 2-1 "The butterflies didn't matter to me" said Rodriguez a Puerto Rican native who spoke to the media through pitching coach Oscar Acosta "It just matters if you have a lot of heart to play the game and I think I have a lot of heart I always have a positive attitude" Gastonia added an insurance run it the top of the ninth First baseman Doug Cronk led the inning off with a single and advanced to second base on Jose Hernandez' sacrifice bunt Cronk scored on an error by Spartanburg third baseman John Marshall In the bottom of the ninth Spartanburg mustered a threat on two-out singles by Tim Churchill and Marshall But Gastonia's winning pitcher Kyle Spencer (1-0) got Mike Carlin to pop out to third base to end the game Spencer pitched four innings to get the victory striking out seven while allowing two hits His effort complemented that of starter Eric Mc Cray "We got outstanding pitching from Mc Cray and Spencer" said Gomez "Mc Cray showed me a good fastball It was even better than he showed me in spring training" Spartanburg scored its first run of the season in the third inning FOR INFORMATION
