Memories 4 Summer Cilearance 1131401 I I "Sure I'm lucky When the New York Giants a team you would give your right arm to beat and vice versa sends you a gift that's something When everybody down to the groundskeepers and those boys in the white coats (the peanut and hot dog vendors) remember you with trophies that's something "When you have a wonderful mother-in-law who takes sides with you in squabbles against her own daughter that's something When you have a father and mother who work all their lives so that you can have an education and build your body its a blessing "When you have a wife who has been a tower of strength and shown more courage than you dreamed existed that's the finest I know "So I close in saying that I might have had a tough break But I have an awful lot to live for" Excerpts from Lou Gehrig's retirement speech: "Fans for the past two weeks you have been reading about the bad break I got Yet today I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth "I have been playing In ballparks for 17 years and have never received anything but kindness and encouragement from you fans" "Look at these grand men (teammates) Which of you wouldn't consider It the highlight of his career Just to associate with them "Sure I'm lucky To have spent six years with that wonderful little fellow Miller Huggins Then to have the next nine years with that outstanding leader that smart student of psychology the best manager in baseball today Joe McCarthy" "Who wouldn't feel honored to room with such a grand guy as Bill Dickey? i i end of the inning as they trotted off the field Gomez and Gordon slapped him on the back and said "Nice play Lou" "Heck it was a routine play I'd made a thousand times" Gehrig said "I knew then it was time for me to get out" The Yankees next traveled to Detroit and Gehrig told manager Joe McCarthy his decision at the hotel McCarthy reluctantly accepted Gehrig's decision On May 2 he advised coach Art Fletcher to inform Babe Dahlgren he was starting at first base Gehrig slapped Dahlgren on the back and told him "Go out there there and drive in some runs" A few days after he took himself out of the lineup Gehrig went to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester Minn for a complete physical examination It was there Gehrig's problem was diagnosed as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis a disease in which the muscles atrophy and the patient eventually is paralyzed Gehrig was given a couple of By JACK LANG Now York Daily News In the history of sports there was no more tearful farewell than those words spoken by Lou Gehrig 50 years ago today It was July 4 1939 and the New York Yankees assembled Gehrig's teammates from the great 1927 team plus his current club to pay homage to the man who had unexpectedly called it quits after 17 years and 2130 consecutive games Gehrig a 340 lifetime batter who had "slipped" to 295 with 29 homers in 1938 suffered through spring training in 1939 The power he always had just wasn't there He also was sluggish in the field When the season opened Gehrig had only four singles in his first 28 at-bats Unwittingly teammates Joe Gordon and Lefty Gomez provided the final clue as to what was wrong On April 30 against the Washington Senators Gehrig struggled to get to first base to receive a throw after a ground ball At the WINTER MERCHANDISE 25 TO MOH ALL WINTER MERCHANDISE years at best to live It became known that Gehrig's ailment was fatal and the Yankees hurriedly arranged a day for him on July 4 1939 With his 1927 teammates on one line and his 1 939 teammates on the other Gehrig received a number of gifts and was asked to speak Standing a few feet in front of a bevy of radio and newsreel microphones mounted on tripods Gehrig stood with head bowed Without looking up he began his famous speech "Fans for the past two weeks you have been reading about the bad break I got Yet today I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth" he began It ended followed by a thunderous ovation In less than two years Gehrig was dead At age 38 he succumbed to what was then a virtually unknown disease Today it is known as Lou Gehrig's disease "Hot Diggety" OMDDETROYEIDN Co Da Silva
