campaign's agenda and putting Gantt on the defensive And Baker conceded Monday that responding to the attacks has sidetracked the campaign somewhat "Of course it takes away from the campaign not to talk about issues he said "More important it takes away from the voters" "Anytime a candidate responds to another candidate's charges that allows the other candidate to set the agenda of discussion said UNC-Charlotte political scientist Schley Lyons "If any points are being scored right now she's scoring them" "To some extent it puts him in a defensive posture" added Meck lenburg Elections Supervisor Bill Culp Gantt disagreed Monday: "I I' don't think we're on the defensive We're not going to spend a lot of time gearing up to defend our' selves against what Sue Myrick says" But the Gantt campaign may be spending more time than it expected in part because it didn't expect the attacks to be so per sonal Two years ago a "dreamer" was about the worst GOP mayoral candidate Dave Berryhill called Gantt Gantt largely ignored Berryhill's barbs But in two news conferences this month one on Gantt's record on roads the other on Gantt's part-ownership of a television station he and partners are selling for a large profit Myrick character: ized Gantt as "self-serving" and "nearsighted" and charged that he had "abused" the public trust and "betrayed" local blacks This time Gantt reacted immediately and strongly to the criti- cism labeling it vitriolic irrespon- sible and desperate "It's silly to say that we'll not respond to something like that" Gantt said Myrick said Monday her campaign strategy is "right on target" "I hope we're setting the agenda" she said "That's what we intend to do My momentum was building before I raised these questions but the questions are getting people to take a second look" Gantt and his advisers said that while he's spending some time responding to Myrick's charges the campaign's focus remains his message of progress and continued leadership "It's impossible for him not to respond" Baker said "But at the same time we haven't seen a change in the focus of our campaign" "Responding and reacting are two different things" said Gantt adviser Mel Watt "I don't see the campaign changing and reacting" Gantt could have ignored the attacks or dismissed them with a few words But observers said that wouldn't be consistent with his record or personality particularly when the attacks impugned his credibility and integrity "Harvey's a fighter a competitive guy" Lyons said "He would really be biting his tongue not to comment Whether that's smart or not is another question" "He seems to have good instincts" said Mecklenburg Demo 4 Mk A 4 0 United Carolina Bank presents Passport For those who've earned a new world of
