1 i SECTION nrz2 Ij fttiami Hralb Friday April 14 1972 1 WHERE TO GO FAMILY FUN MOVIES NIGHT SPOTS WHERE TO DINE fA Clockwork --rClCr 5C? -fSST if 1 W-I'V 'w A E' 40 4 '0 Vs 1 5 I i The answer is simple enougli: Clockwork Orange" is neither 4 0 i Jt -c --tS-Af By JOHN HUDDY Herald Entertainment Editor IAMIANS see movies in a vacuum assuming that they see them at all and when the film in question achieves a certain degree of notoriety as has happened with Stanley Clockwork then such an observation is doubly true Especially when the film plays South Florida after receiving as much coverage as the ITT scandal and Northern Civil war So months after a picture is distributed and discussed we finally see it In viewing the film it often turns out that we are reacting as much to the dialog generated by the film as to the film itself And that can be most revealing No doubt many Miami moviegoers will see Clockwork in much the same way for this principle applies to everyone not just film critics At best this is like reading a good book after sitting through a graduate seminar on the author At worst it is like beginning a classical novel after reading the Classic Comics version IT IS NOT ONE of the best niovies of the year it is not a classical work of art at is not the best picture of the decade it is not a bifeakthrough in the infant history of film as an art form And perhaps more important than all of the fortegoing Clock-work is not Stanley Kubijick best filmmaker at his best i Yet Clockwork is considerably more of a movie than most whicli have been made in the past year Not in the top two or three certainly but better than most And if he work is not Kubrick at his best one supposes that some future film scholar (Rex Reed III God jforbid?) will describe the film as a Kubrick sidetifip an amusing if imperfect excursion off the beaten jpath that eventually reaches a dead end I am saying then that even a mediocre Kubrick movie is better than the effort by many of his alleged peers and that this is why we have heard and read such an unprecedented barrage of talk argument praise criticism and why the Washington Post recently suggested that any movie that provokes this much reaction be all bad Staff Photo by RICHARD FORGHAM Miamians Don Minstrel Finery to Gag It Up for Wesley Minstrel Show they are Ed Bishop Al Gustinger and Jim Pouell op Hats anjos 1 TRUE ENOUGH But the ability to create interest and generate excitement is not die only test of a good movie just as the ability to launch a tour de force of camera technique lighting effects set design and little tricks such as having rthe William Tell SO WHAT OF THIS MOVIE that has been the subject of a series of cover stories on major national magazines of an undending front page debate in the New York Times cultural section and recipient of prestigious awards including Best Picture prize by the New York Film Critics Society? Is it as good as been told or as bad as its detractors have argued?
