THE CHARLOTTE OBSERVER Saturday March 19 1988 7C Tubbs Has Style Foes Learn To Hate ATLANTA Billy Tubbs knew the rules First you stand at the lectern so the cameramen in the back can see you then you answer questions from reporters for 30 minutes and then you leave But Tubbs the basketball coach at Oklahoma chose to sit next to the lectern not stand behind it After a few minutes a cameraman complained So Tubbs was asked by a publicity man to get up and walk to the lectern a couple of feet away am I making speech or Tubbs asked standing now am I an easy Tubbs 53 got a few laughs and he smiled a mean little smile There is convention and there is Tubbs You wonder what would happen to a guy like this in the button-down ACC Tubbs and his players are cocky confi- Now Tubbs is an interesting guy and the Sooners are an interesting team Why the dislike? Two reasons Tubbs and the team Tubbs has said he want to beat opponents he wants to them That those players in the red and white Oklahoma uniforms And his game is war Troops press and attack Center Stacey King averages 217 points forward Harvey Grant twin brother of Horace who played for Clem-son and is now with the Chicago Bulls 212 The team averages a Big Eight record 1048 opponents 815 The Sooners press until they feel like stopping not when decorum tells them to And even with victory certain starters often stay in the game people want to see a second or third string they should go to a high school Tubbs said earlier this season In war there are casualties One was Centenary 152-84 and one was Georgia State 124-81 Clinging to 40-point-plus leads the Sooners continued to press and the losing coaches were irate Georgia Bob Reinhart sent a reserve to the Oklahoma bench to ask Tubbs to call off the assault and refused to shake hand after the game Tubbs said that if his team won 84-41 instead of 124-81 nobody would accuse him of running up the score He also said his reserves trying to earn their spurs and trying to be part of the team I tell them to back off and not play The Sooners would rather win games than friends are going to think what they want to think said King a master of the turnaround jump shot and the tidy phrase up by 20 as a coach you tell the second team not to go hard because they work just as hard as we do in And often beat them King said honestly believe if we put them in the tournament they could play with King said Heads turn when the Sooners walk into The Omni and the team seem to mind When you come from a town called Norman in a state where the leading exports are dust and oil you stand out anyway you can Running up the score is not new at Oklahoma the football team has been doing it for years The teams compete like to see us run up the score and we like to see them said senior forward Dave Sieger Lost among the points is defense a stifling defense that comes at you like a boxer always looking to trap you in a corner and put you away Tennes-see-Chattanooga stayed close into the second half Thursday before getting caught on the ropes and losing by 28 Tubbs and Auburn coach Sonny Smith are friends but if the Sooners lead by 20 with 10 seconds to play scratch and bump and shoot for 2 1 a nice said Smith plays tennis and he likes country music I invite him over for dinner dent nasty aggressive and given to winning by an average of 233 points They also are 30-3 and the No 1 seed in the Southeast Regional They play Auburn today at 5 pm in the second round of the NCAA tournament But if they are the favorites in the betting parlors they are not the favorites among fans at The Omni in Atlanta One group cheered with passion for Bradley on Thursday only because they thought Bradley had a better chance of beating Oklahoma than Auburn did But the Tigers the No 8 seed won 90-86 hate a fan said and nobody in his group Wolfpack Shocked By Racers Continued From Page 1C Valvano said Valvano had predicted the difficulty of first-round play if not defeat in the days before the third-seeded Wolfpack went out for the game Little-known Murray State was small but quick the type of team that has given NC State trouble this season Offensively it was a game of contrasts in first- and second-half play for the Wolfpack The opening 20 minutes produced sharpness outside and very little inside the final 20 were reversed Defensively NC State struggled the entire game for an answer to the quickness The biggest problem came from Don Mann Murray 5-8 point guard He had 1 6 points and eight assists hit four of nine three-pointers and somehow grabbed six rebounds two of them in the final critical seconds when the Wolfpack was trying desperately to pull this one out Del Negro paced NC State with 16 Forward Chucky Brown and center Charles Shackleford came on in the second half to finish with 1 5 each The most obvious missed opportunities came in the final minute when the team twice cut Murray lead to two The Racers pushed it back to three 78-75 on Paul free throw with seven seconds left King missed a second shot and Shackleford rebounded and quickly got the ball to Del Negro who was breaking up the left sideline Del Negro raced to the wing just outside the three-point line and launched a shot for the tie with three seconds to play The ball bounced off the rim and into the hands of NC Brian Howard but time expired before he could get it outside for a final three-point attempt had a good shot by the kid want to take Valvano said work Said Del Negro: was a good shot but unfortunately it was a little off to the But Del missed shot was far from the decisive play NC State started hot and twice built an eight-point lead midway through the first half But the Wolfpack extend the lead missing eight of its next nine shots and twice turning the ball over in the ensuing six minutes The Racers rode five-of-mne three-point shooting to come back and take the lead for good Murray State led 41-36 at halftime The Wolfpack cut the deficit to two 46-44 early in the second half but the Racers responded with an 11-2 run and a 57-46 advantage with 13 minutes 22 seconds to play Valvano said he was disappointed but not surprised different if the underdog is not he said Murray State has had some success The Racers seemed to believe the same thing despite the difference in the teams' seeds and national attention came into this game pretty said center Carl Sias intimidated by them we're basketball players just like they For NC State there was no argument Maryland Holds Off Cal -Santa Barbara Maryland 92 UC-Santa Bar 82 UC-SANTA BARBARA MP FG FT A Pt By RICK BONNELL Ralelph Bureau CHAPEL HILL Mike Krzyzewski revels in recalling National Invitation Tournament appearance his senior year and the emphatic instructions given to him by then-West Point coach Robert Knight were playing South Carolina and he said you take a shot break your Krzyzewski said with a grin got open I mean really open and I went up for a shot from about 1 5 feet Suddenly my life passed in front of me and I passed the Knight system Two decidedly different outgrowths of that system Duke Blue Devils and Dave Southern Methodist Mustangs meet in a second-round game of the NCAA tournament in Chapel Hill today (about 2:45 pm WBTV channel 3) after 12:20 game against Rhode Island Bliss was an assistant coach at Army during senior year Knight went on to Indiana and three national titles while Krzyzewski and Bliss worked their ways toward Duke and SMU They call themselves and enjoy the group identity The word is thrown around a lot too to define the group that includes Don Devoe at Tennessee Tom Miller at Colorado and Chuck Swenson at William Mary Each played for or worked for Knight and generally they try to avoid regular-season games against each other And although Krzyzewski and Bliss face each other today the winner have to worry about a match with their mentor down the road Hoosiers were upset 72-69 Friday by Richmond thing we all learned is based in how hard he pushed said Bliss amazing how much he can push out of In that regard both coaches have kept up the winning tradition Fifth-ranked Duke (25-6) has clinched its fifth 20-victory season while SMU (28-6) is making its third NCAA tournament appearance in five years similarities to the Knight way of doing things is more easily seen team is defensively oriented playing just the aggressive man-to-man style Knight prefers may be the best all-around defensive team in the said Bliss thing that is very evident is that Mike has played the (Knight) defense He teaches it well and obviously recruits to it very smart and what it takes because this is a quick-thought In contrast SMU has an offensive accent The fast-shooting offensive style is symbolized by top scorer Kato Armstrong a 5-1 1 guard averaging 161 points Texans joke the only time Armstrong shoot is when the ball is out of his hands But both Bliss and Krzyzewski say style is more Knight-like than it appears at first glance The point Krzyzewski says is that Bliss has held to cardinal rule be flexible enough to use the talent you have to its best advantage use become more and more popular offensive said Bliss the Loyola Marymount style outscore you to death think a lot of the other are more defensively oriented but we play good defense We make it hard on the other team And what he would DeHart 27 6-10 2-2 1 2 4 18 Gray 14 0-2 0-0 2 0 1 0 McArthur
