persons will get at least one ulcer sometime in his life What causes the stomach r-mmir to eat at itself mtDICINt Ulcers have been called a disease of modern man because of the hectic pace he leads but the big question has been whether the brain or the body causes this selfcannibalism In an attempt to resolve this riddle Dr Jay Weiss a psychologist at Rockefeller University set up an experiment to find out whether physical or psychological stress causes more ulcers in animals It had two parts: Physical stress A rat' hears a tone that precedes an electric shock by 10 seconds and learns it can stop the shock by jumping to a platform Psychological stress A rat hears the same tone but can do nothing to stop the shock It is wired to rat A and gets the shock only if A jump fast enough Weiss found that rat which is helpless to control its situation will get three times the number of ulcers that rat A which can control the shock will get even though they both experience the same shock This may be of considerable interest to the more than 10 million Americans with ulcers because it provides some of the first concrete evidence that psychological stress is more important in producing ulcers than physical stress Scientists have long ar- gued about the influence of the mind in producing disease A whole field of psychosomatic diseases has grown up based primarily on the observations of physicians who have intuitively linked emotions to physical disorders POSITIVE PROOF has been lacking For years now researchers have been able to produce ulcers in animals by subjecting them to physical stress A typical method is forcing a rat to swim in a tank with no means of escape Invariably the animals develop lethal ulcers The question remains however whether it is their fear of drowning or the physical exertion of attempting to stay afloat that produces the ulcers In Dr classical experiment the question was answered Psychological stress appears to be far more deadly Press experiments Dr Weiss developed a theory that the more a person tries to cope with a stressful situation and the lower is his control over that situation the greater will be his chance of getting ulcers The findings of the experiments clearly showed that it was the ability or inability to predict the outcome of a stressful situation that determined the extent of ulcers he said THE DEGREE OF psychological stress in any situation can be determined by so-called coping behavior he said The harder the animal tries to find a solution to the problem the greater is the stress His ulcer risk will depend on his success in finding a solution If a person tries hard to get out of a stress situation but fails his chances of developing an ulcer are the greatest Another person in the same situation who finds a solution funs a small ulcer risk The most important part of the theory is relevant feedback Dr Weiss said This feedback tells the person under stress that he is doing the right thing to solve the problem To prove this point Dr Weiss designed another experiment It was similar to the first one except that rat A instead of jumping to a platform to stop a shock had to spin awheel After the wheel was spun a different tone would sound indicating that the electric shock was postponed for 200 seconds Again rat A was wired to rat which had no control or relevant feedback would get the same shock as A if A slipped up The results were dramatic Rat A had practically no ulcers while rat continued to have the high rate as before The tone signal rat A heard after it spun the wheel was like a pat on the back telling the animal it had done the right thing Dr Weiss explained THIS IS AN important clue in preventing ulcers for it says that a person may be able to avoid ulcers if he gets positive feedback in a stressful situation that normally would produce damage to his stomach Human experiments conducted at the State University of New York at Stony-brook tend to support this conclusion Two groups of people were given the same shock Neither group had control over the shock but the persons in first group were told that by clenching their fists they could stop it The members of the second group were asked simply to clench their fists and that the shock was inescapable Using techniques employed in lie detectors the investigators found that the group that thought it had control had far less emotional arousal than the helpless group Further research indicates that the inability to cope with a stressful situation may be linked to depression Dr Weiss said Biochemical tests on the animals show that two important brain chemicals epinephrine and norepinephrine become depleted in the failure animals Other investigators have pointed out that low levels of these two neurotransmitters are associated with depression in both humans and animals THE MOST ULCER-prone job in the world appears to be that of the air traffic controller the men who guide the landings and takeoffs of planes at busy airports and their position in the A study by Dr Richard Grayson of St Charles 111 of 111 controllers in the Chicago area disclosed that one-third of the controllers had peptic ulcers and another third were on their way to developing them This rate far exceeds the ulcers found in other jobs Surveys show that the ulcers for physicians is 1 1 per cent alcoholics 11 per
