r- I r- ends Irish eelin ers Nebraska Breezes For Devaney 40-6 By BOB ELLIOTT Herald Columnist There have been some great contests and a few sleep-producing affairs in the history of the Orange Bowl Classic However doubtful that any brought on deeper slumber than did Monday 39th offering which saw Cornhuskers smash Notre Fighting Irish in a 40-6 slaughter It was strictly no contest right from the start and was saved from complete oblivion only by a record-shattering performance by Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Rodgers Rodgers scored four touchdowns and his 24 points set an OB Classic record for scoring by an individual The previous high of 19 points was set by Bobby Luna in 61-6 rout of Syracuse back in 1953 Rodgers who sat out part of the third quarter and all of the fourth ran for three touchdowns caught a pass for another and along the way threw his only pass of the season for still another Nebraska six-pointer ByBILLBRAUCHER Herald Sports Writer After another hard-earned day off the Dolphins will to their Biscayne College second home Wednesday and begin preparing for the Super Bowl date with the Washington Redskins The squad will leave for Los Angeles THE CAPACITY crowd of 80010 and a national television audience saw Johnny rush 15 times for 81 yards and catch three passes for 71 yards It was obvious that the Cornhuskers were determined to give Bob Devaney a victory in his final collegiate coaching job However doubtful that even the jovial Nebraska coach anticipated a rout of the proportions that developed THE CORNHUSKERS scoring their third successive Orange Bowl victory got 'seven points in the first quarter 13 in the second period and 20 in the third stanza Notre Dame finally succeeded in putting six points on the board early in the fourth quarter to avert the first Irish shutout since Nov 27 1965 The Irish had gone through 71 consecutive games without being blanked Strangely enough the last time Notre Dame came away without scoring a point occurred right this same Orange Bowl Stadium when the University of Miami fought the Irish to a scoreless tie THE CORNHUSKERS shattered one OB record of long standing' Their 30 first downs topped by one the total Alabama amassed in topping of all teams Nebraska in 1966 Nebraska came close to a total offense mark but its 560-yard total fell 28 yards short of the record 588 Alabama gained in crushing Syracuse The Huskers got 300 yards rushing and 260 passing Notre Dame seemed simply to collapse after it failed to capitalize on two scoring chances the opening period After Nebraska had taken the opening -kickoff back to its 24 the Huskers used 11 plays to march 76 yards to the first touchdown Nebraska stayed on the ground for 10 of the plays with Rodgers and Dave Goeller doing practically all of the ball-carrying Rodgers got the TD on an eight-yard burst over tackle Tim to Page 4D Col 6 nmn ii mm tin immwhi Yardstick re-t Sunday and check in at the Edgewater Hyatt House in suburban Long pro did not enjoy beating Mike Phipps his Purdue classmate and close friend when the Dolphins nipped the Cleveland Browns in the playoff game' misfortune moved Lloyd Mumphord back to the regular corner-hack job he lost to Foley 1971 Meanwhile Mumphord has functioned as perhaps the most valuable performer on rich depth charts As a part-time defensive back in the pass defense Mumphord had four interceptions one less than Jake Scott the club leader At five-feet mne-mches and 170 Mumphord is a mite But he compensates with speed and hustle The four-year pro 26 last month as blocked two Devaney still had a gang of his regulars in when the score was 40-0 after Rodgers had ankled 50 yards with a pass from David Humm that barely reached the line of scrimmage Poor Ara Parseghian and this is one of the few times the Notre Dame coach can ever be called could only stand and watch in the same wonderment as 80010 fans Parseghian could no more find a way to stop Rodgers than you could halt a hurricane by whispering in the wind There have been better Orange Bowl games Few4 worse in fact But never a better one-man show And I blame the Orange Bowl Committee for this rout You invite a Notre Dame team that goes 8-2 through the regular season you figure some Turn to Page 6D Coll I Some satisfied with Johnny Rodgers winning the Heisman Trophy but Notre Dame demanding any recount this morning If there is a better college football player than Rodgers tfje Irish had just as soon not hear about him Orange BoVl was no contest because it was all Rodgers The ghetto kid from Omaha ran for three touchdowns caught a pass for another and threw for ix more points 40-6 runaway from Notre Dape Actually the Cornhuskers weren't running away from the Fighting Irish They were running right through them was Johnny Rodgers He only seemed like a half-dozen backs at once There have been other Heisman Trophy winners In the Orange Bowl: Joe Bellino of Navy in 1961 and Steve Spurrier of Florida in 1967 They were something but Rodgers was something else The closest thing ever to Rodgers in an Orange Bowl was Georgia tailback Frank Sinkwich in 1942 (he win Heisman until his nextscason) and Sinkwich have caught Rodgers using Sir Donald Campbell as a chauffeur YOU THINK maybe Bob Devaney Olhcr Ibml Scores JIosp Bowl Southern Cal 42 Ohio Stale 17 Cotton Bou I Texas 17 Alabama 13.
