DeHART Herald Staff Writer The body of Nelson Lynn Radcliff a Miami Herald computer operations supervisor who disappeared Saturday while road-testing his motorcycle was found at 8 am Monday on a dirt road near 8601 NW 185tlf St about a half-mile from his home Metro police said Mr Radcliff of 17455 NW 85 Ave was found by a passerby It appeared he had failed to maneuver a turn on the dirt road hit a mound of dirt and was thrown into a fence post breaking his neck police said He had owned the 1971 Hohda motorcycle for about a year He was found near the machine with his helmet on His wife Nancy said "He and his son were always piddling with it He was road testing it to get it ready for inspection" John Kluczynski Illinois Lawmaker describe four cases including one which proved fatal in which patients developed agranulocytosis after taking these herbal medicines They say more cases can be expected The authors Drs Curt A Ries and Mervyn A Sahud of the University of Californi at San Francisco say the medicines originated in Hong Kong and Taiwan: The patients middleage and elderly non-Chinese took the medicines for relief of arthritis and back pains THEY DEVELOPED agranulocytosis and their white flood cell count quickly dropped The disease is marked by high fever prostration and ulceration of the Mouth vagina and rectum The herbal medicines used by these patients were found to contain the drugs aminopyrine and phenylbutazone anti-inflammatory pain-relieving agents that are known to cause agranulocytosis in some persons Aminopyrine has been banned from over-the-counter sale in the United States since 1938 and no longer is used even in prescription drugs But Ries and Sahud say there was no indication on the package that the offending drugs were part of the medication THE DOCTORS say that Chinese herbal medicines have gained great popularity in the United States in the past few years The medicines are pro 'noted as treatment for rheumatism and neuralgia to improve blood circulation for sexual rejuvenation and as a general tonic They are said to contain Chinese herbs and other exotic substances' such as scorpion tiger bone rhinoceros horn turtle shell and male mouse droppings "Although the efficacy of such preparations is highly questionable physicians and public health officials have not been aware previously of any adverse reactions associated with their use" Ries and Sahud say in the report TIIE PHYSICIANS say the addition of aminopyrine and phenylbutazone to the medicines was a recent development The drugs are hard round brown or black pills and are Democrat died Monday at his home in Illinois of a heart attack his office announced Kluczynski was chairman of the transportation subcommittee of the House Public Works Committee and headed the Select Committee which ran the House restaurants He was considered close to Chicago Mayor Richard Daley He was 79 years old and had been in the House since 1950 The House adjourned out of respect to
