are still out and about thanks largely to the enthusiastic efforts of his widow 'Since 1981 I promised myself and the fans that I would keep on dishing out something of John's every year" Yoko Ono said in an interview a few days before Lennon's 50th birthday on Oct 9 HI simply don't like the idea that John would lust become a library item" A library item no But posthumously Lennon has become a cottage industry Living in the cottage of course is Ono and her constant companion Sam Havadtoy Their office Studio One is on the ground floor of the Gothic Dakota apartment house where Lennon was killed as Yoko looked on The wall behind Ilavadtoy's desk is covered with Lennon's photos and album covers a reminder of who still makes the money here Attempts to cash in on Lennon's memory began sooner you act on them the better your chances of keeping them alive and exciting" As he explains it: "The premise is rather simple: two Italian-American brothers living in New York who work as plumbers As in the game itself there will be an odyssey and a quest I'm taking as many elements from the game as I can but I'm also trying to write it as a motion picture that has its own integrity for those who've never seen the game I think it'll be inherently funny in that the brothers are a study in contrast like Laurel and Hardy or Abbott and 0 THE war of Dec 8 1980 John lenmm was returning home with Ono after a session for her "Walking on Thin Ice" single Ile stepped from the limousine and moved toward the entrance of the Dakota apartments A demented fan Mark David Chapman was waiting on the sidewalk with a copy of "The Catcher in the Rye" and a Charter Arms 38- caliber revolver After Lennon passed him he opened fire The slaying produced a worldwide outpouring of grief Tens of thousands of people gathered in New York's Central Park for a ceremony that culminated in 10 minutes of silence the Dakota front gate became an instant shrine three distraught fans committed suicide But even as John Lennon died his legend had been born Lennon's image that of seminal rocker prophet of peace and love devoted family man was virtually uncontested for eight years until the publication of Goldman's 7I9-page barrage Goldman's Lennon was a violent Liver a John Lennon Frisbee She hung up but offers of Lennon dinnerware and charm bracelets followed in quick order Ono was never involved in this flood of low-budget merchandise she spent her days holed up in the Dakota with son Sean But a year after the slaying Ono was back running the Lennon empire She ended the 1980s with a reported net worth of $500 million Yet she says "bad karma" dogged her through the decade: 'Double Fantasy" producer Jack Douglas collected about $27 million in a settlement with Ono after suing her for royalties Elephant's Memory the backup band at Lennon and Ono's 1972 Madison Square Garden concert sued for $70 million claiming in the process that Yoko was musically so inept that her keyboard was unplugged during the show Ono had to pay an undisclosed amount to the writers of the song "Makin' Whoopee" for copyright in Film land Flair: Filmmaker Fred Schepisi is gearing up for a late February possible" according to the director After waiting nearly a year since "Russia wrapped production Schepisi is holding his breath about the public recention awaiting his Lomplex tale of international intrigue that also stars Sean Connery and Roy Scheider "Russia House" is hardly the lighthearted film fare audiences seem to crave of late but Schepisi feels "if people give in to it it's great" Schepisi collected congratulations at this week's lavish "Russia House" premiere benefiting the Motion Picture and Television Fund Meanwhile Parker Stevenson was one among the premiere's dozens of celeb attendees with a personal reason to play booster for the fund which supports a wide range of health care facilities for industry members His father has been in the care of the fund's Alzheimer's back to the "Peter Gunn" series of 1958-61 Lennon: Will '90s bring an age of wisdom? Role models: Connie Chung has been voted most stylish newscaster in a survey of 500 women polled by the Express clothing stores Among others whose styles the women try to emulate are Candice Bergen (27 percent) Phylicia Rashad (15 percent) and first lady Barbara Bush (15 percent) Oprah Winfrey was named best-dressed female talk 'The age of wisdom is an age where we can change things by discussion rather than fists and by understanding each other rather than trying to buy and control things" Yoko Ono Hammer: Pushes peace world today suddenly said "And violence in the streets is a very serious issue as well not just in New York but in all cities really" it was difficult not to feel a chill to the bone while remembering what took place just outside this very building one night 10 years ago She didn't feel comfortable discussing any of the myriad versions of "what might have been" the scenarios that the rest of us can't seem to refrain from spinning out "I don't want to guess how he would have felt about it" Ono said when asked how Lennon might have perceived the culture of greed and materialism that coalesced in the early '80s "My guess is just as good as yours We all know what he said and what he stood for and what sort of person he was I think that it's very interesting that even in the '80s his influence was felt and also his songs were encouraging to a lot of people So it's not like he stopped working" Like Lennon himself in even his bitterest moments Ono maintains an essential optimism "In the midst of the Reagan age" Ono said "when the Star Wars idea and all that was very prominent I thought 'Well what can I And so when Strawberry Fields opened I tried to plant a little seed about the fact that we're entering the age of wisdom Friends said 'Entering the age of wisdom? Are you crazy? We're not wise at all' "And I thought But we have to be' she continued "And I think that we could be The age of wisdom is an age where we can change things by discussion rather than fists and by understanding each other rather than trying to buy and control things And I think that the '90s will be that I think that the Establishment and the people are going to use the maximum human wisdom to make a beautiful world This is our mission of this decade: to greet the 21st century in peace and with a feeling of satisfaction" It's a lovely vision and one that John Lennon surely would have shared Whether it becomes a reality or not all of us can affirm the feelings Yoko Ono expressed at the end of her speech at the United Nations though none of us can feel it as profoundly as she does "Happy Birthday John" she said speaking slowly to prevent her voice from breaking "The world is better today for having shared a time with you" Continued from page I over more than 1000 radio stations in 130 countries to an audience of about 1 billion listeners The event was an eminently appropriate tribute to Lennon a man who never hesitated to exploit his fame to try to change the world His blunt messages "All You Need Is Love" "Give Peace a Chance" "Power to the People" "War Is Over if You Want It" were essentially slogans in the service of social betterment Sitting in the living room of the apartment she shared with Lennon for many years in the Dakota in New York Yoko Ono discussed the legacy of John Lennon on the day after the ceremony at the United Nations Even Ono had to admit that at least in the years immediately following her husband's death it seemed as if much of their work had come to naught though in her view that work bore fruit eventually and will continue to "John was saying in 1980 'The '80s are going to be a great great decade a fantastic decade'" Ono said "Mainly to project positiveness and was saying that too But fans would write to me saying 'Well John said the '80s were going to be great but what's For one thing to start the decade John died "Then what happened was I think it started with Band Aid and Live Aid We had 'We Are the World' Hands Across America Amnesty Inter national all of these big things started to hap pen Those things were the results of the grass-roots movements of the '60s" she contin: ued "Then Gorbachev and Reagan shook hands Then at the end of the '80s as if somebody was making a point to do it within the 180s suddenly the Berlin Wall disappeared Eastern Europe was freed I mean it's incredible!" Though the decision to stage the ceremony at the UN was made well before Iraq's invasion of Kuwait the event gained political resonance be: cause of the UN's peace-keeping role at a time when war sometimes seems just a shot away "Even the way that both sides in the Middle East crisis are dealing with the situation now is very sensible" Ono said cautiously aware of the day-to-day shifts the problem takes "go hope fully it will not go toward a violent situation" Ono's introductory statement at the United Nations was characterized by a strong if politely 4 expressed environmental stance a position she perceives to be an essential component qf shaping a legacy for Lennon The show's promoters didn't go out of their way to let fans know that Vanilla Ice wouldn't be appearing and every one of the six fans I spoke to at the concert expressed disappointment that Vanilla Ice wouldn't be performing Jenny Kangas 17 of Walnut Creek cried when she found out "I had good seats and everything" she said "He (Hammer) better be pretty good to make up for this" "I do not believe this" exclaimed Regina Dimas also 17 who drove from Stockton with a sister and a cousin "I'm jinxed!" Nevertheless Arco spokesman Mike Duncan said that he'd had no requests for refunds from any of the 16000 fans present Indeed despite Vanilla Ice's absence the show was no disappointment With the lineup trimmed from six acts in August (which led to Hammer's not appearing on stage until 12:30 am) this time the show was tight and ended when it was supposed to Vanilla Ice was replaced by last-minute opening act Cloud and the Crew from Oakland But it was En Vogue a quartet of sassy young women who combined rap with more traditional that proved to be most worthy delivering well-sung vocals over beats that got the party started right Continued from page I the show's final moments and asked for the audience to raise peace signs in the air "for love for unity for respect for each other and most of all for the children" But the consciousness-raising wasn't as overbearing as it may sound Instead the show's main problem was an overlong slow-paced section that lasted for some 20 minutes and sapped the energy that had been built with crowd-pleasing jams such as "Turn This Mutha Out" "Pump It Up" and "Pray" Eager to move beyond rap Hammer has expanded his roster of proteges to include singers and he featured one David Black whom he met recently in Alabama and whom he is now recording Black was a decent singer but his scenery-chewing version of Johnny Gilt's "My My My" was jarringly inappropriate to the tone of the show and derailed the momentum which was never quite recovered The show also was marred for a number of fans by the absence from the bill of Vanilla Ice another Hammer protege who has sold so many copies of his debut album "To the Extreme" that he abandoned the Sacramento show and three other dates in order to play a few European gigs "In celebration of John's life" she said "let's use the power of dreaming Let's dream of trees growing in abundance birds flying in clear air fish swimming in clear water and our children living in joy" Ono has taken pragmatic steps to attempt to transform that dream into reality Last fall in Japan she announced her desire to establish in cooperation with the Japanese government Greening of the World scholarships in Lennon's honor The concert in Tokyo and the television special in the US are designed to raise money for the scholarship fund "The scholarships are for the children of the world" Ono explained "It would be given to Third World exchange students It doesn't specify what subject they should study because the greening of the world I feel is not just the physical greening of the world but it has to start with the mind" In her large airy apartment with its spare white decor and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Central Park overlooking Strawberry Fields Ono seemed delicate and slight Now 57 years old smoking incessantly she wore faded jeans and a dark blue shirt she was slender barefoot and without her almost omnipresent sunglasses she looked vulnerable even girlish far less imposing than she can sometimes appear in the media When Ono in the course of enumerating some of the most pressing issues facing the III 0 1990 Straight Arrow Publishers Inc Decorate Your Eyes with 1 '60 GIFT
