"Then there isn't a NASCAR official around to tell us what's going on So Kyle figures if nothing is going on he'll take off He does and gets a bit sideways So NASCAR brings him in again saying that he almost hit a NASCAR official "Hey look Kyle's a responsible driver and he's not going to run over anybody It's an unfortunate situation" By TOM HIGGINS Staff Miter MARTINSVILLE Va NASCAR put its so-called "penalty box" into effect for the first time this season Sunday and the occupant during the Pannill Sweatshirts 500 at Martinsville Speedway was Kyle Petty The defending champion in Charlotte's Coca-Cola 600 Petty was held for a nine-lap "cooling-off period" after a tangle with Geoff Bodine and then a misunderstanding with a Winston Cup official on pit road The incident started when the cars of Petty and Bodine spun after making contact on the backstretch on the 246th of 500 laps On Lap 271 Petty emerging from the pits appeared to brush Bodine's car NASCAR ordered Petty's Ford black flagged When no official on pit road was able to explain the reason for the black flag Petty sped off Again NASCAR officials called for a black flag and the long penalty ensued Girls Shot standings Additionally Earnhardt's $53550 share of the $383055 purse a record for a NASCAR short track gave him the circuit's money-winning lead with $334140 He took over the top spot from Bobby Allison who had led since winning the season-opening Daytona 500 Said Marlin who led three times for 101 laps in quest of his first victory: "I almost had one The car worked good all day But I think (Ricky) Rudd needs some sideview mirrors He just knocked right into me (on Lap 420 as Earnhardt and Marlin tried to re-lap Rudd in Turn 2) That messed up the toe-in on my car I felt I had a chance to win and it was taken away" Marlin built a lead of eight seconds before the caution period that gave Earnhardt's crew the chance to make its decisive tire change Sunday's was the best finish this year for Marlin and his Billy Hagan team which now has four top-five showings Marlin rallied from 21st starting position to contend and Hi Ilin charged from 29th to take third "This is a big reward 'cause everyone knows we've been having trouble" Hi Ilin said of his Stavo la Brothers team which showed a best finish of sixth in the season's first seven races "We hung in there and stuck together when we needed to The crew hasn't been down on me and didn't give up No one jumped ship We wanted to work things out ourselves and today shows we're doing that" Earnhardt won six of eight on NASCAR's short tracks last year but this was his first win on one in 1988 His other win this year came in Atlanta's Motorcraft 500 "We could have won three more already except for two flat tires and a broken motor mount" said Earnhardt who averaged 74740 mph as seven cautions slowed the race for 46 laps "Last week at North Wilkesboro Speedway (when a leaking tire cost Earnhardt almost certain victory) was definitely on my mind the last 20 laps today But 1 was determined to run hard regardless" HARRELSON I MAZDAFORDYUGO SON )ptuco I Iv 11 1 I Johnson Clemson Win Schenkel Golf Crown LOST Fo Aril CASTMIG
