North Carolina Motor Speedway Phoenix International Raceway Atlanta International Raceway DAYTONA BEACH Fla It was Rusty Wallace who expressed perhaps the most apt assessment for driver strategy in today's Busch Clash stock car race "First you pull your safety belts down just as tight as they will go" Wallace said Saturday at Daytona International Speedway The special event clash is set for a noon start (WBTV channel 3) opening a doubleheader that includes the Automobile Racing Club of America's 200-mile run "Then you hold your eyes about the size of silver dollars" The Busch Clash matching NASCAR Winston Cup Series pole winners from the previous season and a wild-card entry indeed is that type of race It covers only 50 miles 20 laps at the 25-mile track and in 10 previous runnings it has produced sizzling average winning speeds ranging from 189076 mph to 1V802 And there's a lot of money at stake The purse is $230000 including $50000 for the winner Fldnuses of $10000 go to the leader(s) on Laps 5 and 15 $15000 on Lap 10 the halfway poi nt Wallace might have to hold his eyes wider open than most in the field He drew the 12th starting position for his Pontiac in a lottery Thursday Scheduled to start in front of Min in order are Ken Schrader Ricky Rudd Darrell Waltrip Terry Labonte Geoff Bodine wild-card Rick Mast Davey Allison Alan Kulwicki Rick Wilson Mprgan Shepherd and Mark Martin Bill Elliott who broke his left wrist in a crash during practice Friday drew the 13th spot thevrolet drivers Schrader Waltrip and Bodine based on their speeds in practice and time trials for next Sunday's Daytona 500 the feature of Speed Weeks generally were rated the favorites Saturday in the speedway's garage area Schrader Waltrip and Bodine Hendrick Motorsports teammates starting bumper-to-bumper on the inside line of cars openly joked about hooking up in an aerodynamic draft and trying to put some distance on the others Almost certainly they're probably talking Other Schedules privately about it too very seriously "I'm going to start up front and just stay there" said Schrader "That's all there is to do During the race I'll see what's happening behind me Who'll go with me (draft) and who won't "I doubt there are going to be many partners out there These guys are too greedy for that" Said Waltrip: "I had the best car at both Daytona and Talladega (a sister track in Alabama) last year and didn't win a race We're going to make up for that starting in the clash The Hendrick cars are all together so the boss is proud We'll make a good run" Bodine after drawing the fifth starting position proclaimed it a portent of victory His car carries No 5 "Schrader wants me him and Darrell to line up and take off and run like that the whole race" Bodine said with a grin "I asked him 'What about all that bonus money for Laps 5 10 and He said not to worry about that I said 'To heck with that I'm coming after you and Darrell'" Bodine sincerely feels he'll win But others have high hopes too especially Rudd "Starting on the front row is good for us" said Rudd "I like having daylight in front of me" Patty Moise seeks to add to history of her own in the ARCA 200 which follows the clash Moise became the first woman to win a No 1 starting position at the track when she qualified a Buick at 195499 mph Friday Now she's given a good chance to become the speedway's first female race victor as well Busch Series Camel Grand Prix CART March Grand Prix Tokyo April 200 Phoenix Grand Prix of Long Beach Long Beach Calif May 500
