1 May 9, 1962 The Ventura (Calif.) County Star-Free Press Ojai Festival to Feature Varied Fare The daily schedule for the prelude is 4 to 5 p.m., Mozart discussion (festival theme is and Contemporary Music) and 8:30 to 10 p.m., lecture and concert music by the visiting composer. Friday evening, May 18, at 8:30 in the Ojai Festival Bowl, three county composers will play three Mozart concerti. Pianists Leo Smit, Andre Previn and Foss will also take turns conducting the Ojai Festival Orchestra, and Gregg Smith Singers will also perform. On May 19 at 11 a.m., in Nordhoff High School auditorium. chamber music and songs by Mozart, Bartok, Hindesmith, Milhaud, Schoenberg, Berg and Webern will be featured.

Performers are Marni Nixon, Bert Gassman, Norman Herzberg, Howard Colf, Leo Smit, Gunther Schuller, Natalie Lamonick and Richard Dufallo. That evening at 8:30 in the Ojai Festival Bowl, experimental music and jazz by Varese, Cage. Berio and Berio are slated, with jazz profiles by the Dolphy Trio, Luciano Berio, Cathy Berberian, Eric Dolphy and Gunther Schuller will perform. Following the concert will be a midnight composers' symposjum at the Rodney Walker home, Ojai, with Alfred Frankenstein, critic, as moderator. The following morning at 11 in Nordhoff auditorium, the Roger Wagner Chorale with Roger Wagner conducting will present sacred American choral music, featuring works by Copland, Barber, Harris, Hanson, Schuman, Zador, Smit, Toch and Ives.

A public preview of Stravinsky's "A Sermon, "A Narrative and A Prayer" is programmed. Sunday afternoon at 5 in the Ojai Festival Bowl the final festival concert will be presented with Foss conducting. Highlight will be the United States premiere of the Stravinsky work and another of his compositions. The festival orchestra, Roger Wagner Chorale, and Marni Nixon, Allen Keller, Grace-Lynn Martin, Margery MacKay, Nancy Bramlage and James Tippey will participate in the festival climax. Tickets to the festival may be obtained by calling MI 6-2094 or writing Box 185, Ojai.

'MARY MARY' TO BE STAGED AT LOBERO 4 Composers Give Prelude To Events A weekend of music to content the heart of every music lover In Ventura County is scheduled at the 16th annual Ojai Festival, May 18-20. A prelude to the festival will be four days of performances by four composers, May 14-17, 123 the Ojai Community Art Center. Featured composers are Monday, May 14, Luciano Berio; Tuesday, Milton Babbitt; Wednesday, Gunther Schuller; and Thursday, Lukas Foss. Box office sale of tickets for the New York comedy hit play, "Mary Mary," will start on Monday at the Lobero Theatre. The comedy drama is currently enjoying the heaviest ticket sale of any of the present crop of plays.

From the pen of Jean Kerr, authoress of many popular novels, plays and other writings, "Mary Mary," is considered perhaps her best composition of her long career. The Lobero Theatre engagement is slated for June 4 to 9 and is the Pacific Coast premiere of the national company, prior to a full engagement in Los Angeles and San Francisco and a subsequent full national tour.
