April 25, IN COURT FIGHT Kay Spreckels Gable, Clark Gable's widow, has epened a court fight in San Francisco to be named a trustee in the multimillien dollar estate left by Spreckels grandfather her children. She diverced her late husband, Adolph Spreckels in 1952. Dick Powell Must Enjoy Being Boss By RICK DU BROW HOLLYWOOD. (UPI) Dick Powell was irresistible to the ladies again on his NBC-TV show last night. It must be nice to be the boss.
In the story, a stripteaser (Mamie Van Doren) is so upset at the theft of her act by a colleague (Barbara Nichols) that she hires lawyer Powell get it back, despite the objections of his respectable fiancee (Angie Dickinson). Powell kissed Miss Dickinson lot and Miss Van Doren a little. And Miss Van Doren and Miss Nichols tossed their torsos whenever things got dull. But don't get the idea that Powell was selling sex, sex, sex to cover a weary comedy. No, sir.
He had message with heart, to wit: Anybody has a right to have creation protected. So if you wonder why Miss Nichols had to repeat a strip sequence we saw her de earlier, don't think cynical thoughts. Remember Powell's words to the judge: "Your bonor, this is much bigger than a The dance was Miss Van Doren's routine in which she portrays the three stages of a missile taking off. In the third stage, find out she's not missile. There were strip scenes in a law office and in court.
But the funniest bit was Miss Nichols doing the act in a club. screeching, blastoff." then having her costume disintegrate in smoke. As usual, Powell's script was slick and brittle, with a childish idea of sophisticated romantic dialogue. Samples: for real? Powell "Try Powell had Angie "So de Miss Van Doren and Miss Nichols were cast according to their ability. As for Powell, his performance ranged from the way you saw him last time to the way you'll see him next.
In Hollywood, the show is the kind described by certain nostalgia-prone producers as the type of entertainment "they" don't make any more. Translation: "We don't know how to make anything else. From its opening shots in a pub, where Cockneys sang "It's a Long Way to to its moving closing which showed proud old soldiers in uniformed drill at the Royal Hospital in Chelsea, ABC-TV's "Britain: Ally on the Verge" last night was powerful documentary about where our island partner is heading. The hour-long pregram, preduced and written for the "Close-up!" series by Helen Jean Rogers, was successful in making crystal clear the complex issues facing Britain at time of crisis: When it is deciding whether to emphasize its role in the Common Market, the Commonwealth or neutralism. The sad disintegration of the empire was graphicaly shown, as was the pride of Britons in their indomitablity.
The cameras wandered from Hyde Park, where a radical neutralist speaker was as funny and effective an actor as I've seen on televison all year, to cocktail parties to a ban-thebomb torchlight parade. Miss Rogers is a lady to be reckoned with. SHEET MUSIC Collections, Solos, Methods J.B. Penney Music 670 E. Mein St.

It is a part that calls for more sensitivity than the average young man possesses, and Dennis plays it with a depth of feeling rare in one so young.
A Port Hueneme resident. Dennis has had a good deal of experience in little theater, much of it with the Plaza Players in lesser roles. He was in "No Time for "Compulsion," Mame" and Trial," and among his other credits is a lead in "Major Barbara" at Ventura College. He studied at Pasadena Community Playhouse for a season, and also with Michael Maynez, and is an accomplished dancer. There will be four more performances of the play, which closes Saturday night.
ANOTHER ANGEL By MARGARET John Quinn joins John Dryer and Lee Deane to round out the trio of leads in Ventura Group Theater's "My Three which is to be produced at Ventura High School's Little Theater late in June. Director Lyda Tidwell has completed the cast with Kelly Weaverling, who will play the lieutenant in the Spewack comedy. Francis Sattler, Jean Marshall and Roberta Schoenherr have featured roles. OUT OF WORKSHOP Other news from the county's newest 1 theatrical venture is that Ventura Group Theater's Workshop, which held its first meeting last Wednesday, with Rush Rishel, will furnish entertainment for members of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority at a dinner meeting in Pierpont Inn next Monday. Gita Hall, president of the group, says it's a reciprocal gesture in appreciation of the sorority's assistance in making Harry" such a success.
Dr. Gael Turnbull and Jean English will present a skit based on a short story by Dorothy Parker, and Helen Boyd and Francis Sattler will provide the musical portion of the program. The Workshop, which is the special province of Jennetta Schoenback and Roberta Schoenherr, will be held every other Wednesday at 7:30 in Ventura Civic Recreation Center. Next meeting falls on May 2, and everybody is welcome. EXTRAORDINARY AMBASSADOR An 18 year old boy set out for New York last winter bound for Europe with a little cash, a guitar, a night act he'd written himself and an infinite amount of enthusiasm for the whole project.
Probably no one but Dick McReynolds could have seen so much or gone so far with such ebullience. The young Ventura actor has already visited France, Germany most exciting and dramatic), the Scandinavian countries and Spain, and is now working in a nursery in Paris. He has stayed in youth hostels, sung for his supper on many occasions, helped French farmers with their harvest for his room and board. Dick was encouraged to try out for "Picnic" by his English teacher, Don Streat, whose own interest in the theater has been communicated to many students, but never with such apparent intensity as Dick's. He became instantly devoted to drama, and as he took other roles, the musical "Annie Get Your Gun" and as the bewildered, tortured Davidson in Trial," his natural talent became disciplined and perfected.
His work in Mike Maynez' drama classes was always creative and inspired. He thinks he will be back in time for auditions for Plaza Players' "West Side Story" this summer. In the meantime this extraordinary representative of American youth must be enriching himself and all those who come in contact with him. MARBLE BITS The Conejo Players went on a holiday from "The Seven Year Itch" Easter week, but resume playing tonight Mark Sullivan has joined Ventura Group Theater Ernie and Phyllis Cantor, both in "Tea and Sympathy," are also talented singers Glenn Sipes is "keeping the store" The Music Box for a couple of weeks while his sounds-alike father is on vacation.
