(AP Laserphoto) Actress Merle Oberon with her fourth husband, Robert Wolders Tributes Are Sounded For 'Lovely' Merle Oberon LOS ANGELES (AP) Actress Merle Oberon, whose beauty inspired a special photographic light still used in the film industry, was a woman who "led a life as lovely as she was." Miss Oberon, best remembered for her role as Cathy in "Wuthering Heights" with Sir Laurence Olivier, died Friday at Cedars Sinai Hospital. suffered a stroke in her Malibu home late Thanksgiving Day. Director George Cukor recalled the first time he met Miss Oberon. "It was in 1936 at a party he said. This perfectly charming girl with her hair in braids and wearing a simple dress and no jewelry came into the room and I though she was the most ravishing girl I'd ever seen.

"Although I never worked with her professionally, she became one of my dearest friends and led a life as lovely as she was." The light used to bring out her classic features was called The Obie." Invented in the 1940s by cinematographer Lucien Ballard, Miss Oberon's second husband, it was created specifically to photograph her. She inspired many such tributes. and one ended in tragedy. Italian Count Giorgio Cini, whom she called "the love of my was killed in 1949 as he circled his private plane on takeoff so he could wave goodbye to her. No one was quite sure how old Miss Oberon was when she died.

Her family said she was 62, but various movie reference books gave her age as 60 to 68. She admitted she worked at her looks and lied about her age. Miss Oberon is to be buried privately Wednesday after a memorial service at All Saints Episcopal Church in Beverly Hills. Born Estelle Merle O'Brien Thompson in Tasmania near Australia, and educated in India. she began her 40-year film career in bit parts in England.

Her first three husbands were director Alexander Korda. Ballard and millionaire industrialist Bruno Pagliai Sr. She married Dutch actor Robert Wolders, nearly 30 years her junior, in 1978. Wolders was at Miss Oberon's bedside when she died. She lived at several lavish homes here and in Mexico.

Her favorite was a "marble castle" just 20 steps above the ocean in Acapulco. The home was placed on the market in 1971 for $2.2 million. It was sold earlier this year to the sister of exiled Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi of Iran. A lover of fine gems. she used her own jewelry in the movie "Hotel." The value of her collection has been estimated at between $350.000 and $500.000.
