Sunday, March 13, 1983 Santa Cruz Sentinel A-15 State PUC dumps commuter train It gers daily, far short of the 2,600 predicted. Both Southern Pacific and Caltrans had asked the PUC last month to allow suspension of the trains. Southern Pacific claimed the Caltrans budget did not allow sufficient funds to operate the service and that the agency had been unable to obtain or maintain adequate equipment. Southern Pacific contended it needed a monthly state subsidy of more than $588,000 to operate the service, while Caltrans said the monthly cost to the state should run about $70,000. Caltrans said continuing the service was not in the "public interest" while these major issues remained unresolved.

LOS ANGELES (AP) The CalTrain commuter rail service between Los Angeles and Oxnard has apparently reached the end of the line. The Public Utilities Commission said Friday that Southern Pacific, which operated the service for the state, could suspend it on two days' public notice. Notices were expected to go out in time for suspension on Monday the day service was to resume. The CalTrain was shut down by storm damage March 2. The service had been plagued by poor patronage, uncertain funds and inadequate equipment.

The commission left open the possibility that service could be restored with adequate funding and operating equipment. And it approved a Transportation Depart- ment request that Southern Pacific not be allowed to remove platforms, passenger or parking facilities at Northridge, Moorpark, Camarillo, Burbank and Burbank International Airport. "We fear it's a setback to other opportunities for pommuter rail service in the Los Angeles area," lamented Victor Weisser, PUC rail transportation chief, over curtailment of the service begun Oct. 18. The PUC i San Francisco came at a special confer, word that Caltrans "no longer desires to sponsor the service because of funding and equipment problems" and that no option was available short of a suspension.
