The women's fathers, who have been searching for the daughters in California since Aug. 5, identified jewelry found near the bodies Thursday, said Santa Barbara Sheriff's Sgt. Ralph Ginter. "The fathers flew into Santa Maria tonight and identified jewelry as belonging to their daughters," Ginter said late Thursday.

"Positive identification will not be made until there is an autopsy and dental charts are compared." Dental records were being sent from Stockholm and an autopsy was scheduled today, authorities said. Marie Lilienberg, 23, and Maria Wahlen, 25, disappeared July 22 after setting out from a friend's home in Redwood City for Los Angeles, authorities said. Their fathers, Ove Lilienberg and Lars Wahlen, flew to California when the girls failed to contact their families or return home. The men were in Redwood City until Thursday evening, when they flew to Santa Maria, said Sheriff's Sgt. Bob Rogers.

A deer hunter found the bodies Thursday morning near the Pine Canyon ranger station in a rugged area just east of Santa Maria, said Sheriff's Sgt. Tom Gee. Both bodies were nude and there were no personal effects found except the jewelry, he said. One body was hidden in some brush and the other was found out in the open, he said. They had been there "two to four weeks" but there was no indication of how they died, Gee said.

The missing girls traveled together the past three months, and planned to return to Sweden at the end of July. Before leaving the San Francisco area, they telephoned home to outline their plans, which included flying from Los Angeles to New York and spending several days with friends in Connecticut before departing for Sweden, their fathers said. "We knew every move they planned and their home-coming times," Lilienberg said earlier this week. "We would like to know something. The worst thing would be to go back to Sweden and not know anything." Ms.

Lilienberg, a physical education student, and Ms. Wahlen, a preschool teacher, met in Colorado during the skiing season and had been traveling together for the past three months on what they called their "American dream trip," financed by loans from their parents.
