O'Brien, whose career ranged from stage to radio to film a and spanned more than 40 years, was 69 when he succumbed Wednesday night to complications resulting from Alzheimer's disease. "Edmond O'Brien was a fine actor who contributed greatly to every picture in which he actor Jimmy Stewart said through his publicist Thursday. "He will be sorely missed." O' Brien co-starred with Stewart in "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" one of 60 films and television shows in his career. In 1962 alone he worked in four movies: "Liberty "Moon Pilot," "Birdman of Alcatraz" and "'The Longest Day." "I don't mind work," he said shortly after receiving an Academy Award for best supporting actor in 1954.

"It keeps me out of trouble. The Oscar was for his portrayal of a sweaty, fast-talking press agent in "'The Barefoot Contessa." In 1964 he was nominated for an Oscar for playing the alcoholic Southern senator imprisoned by the military in "Seven Days in May," a feature about a nearly successful military coup in America. Inspired by his Harlem neighbor, magician Harry Houdini, O' Brien put on his first performance, a magic show, in a basement at age 10. 'Gimme A Break' star Dolph Sweet dies at 64 LOS ANGELES (AP) Dolph Sweet, who played the lovable police chief Carl Kanisky on the NBC television show "Gimme a Break," has died of cancer. He was 64. The veteran Broadway and cinema character actor died Wednesday at Tarzana Hospital, said Matt Bozek, a publicist for NBC-TV. Nell Carter, who plays the police chief's housekeeper, will eulogize Sweet before the start of Saturday's episode and at his funeral the same day. Services were scheduled at St.

Bridget of Sweden Church in Van Nuys. The popular show has been renewed for a fifth season, but it was undecided what would be done about Sweet's character, Bozek said. Sweet had missed four episodes in the 1983-84 season because of stomach surgery. "But he remained on the show throughout this past season," Bozek said. "If he wasn't on the show, it wasn't because of the illness.

He just wasn't called for." Although most widely known for his television character, Sweet was a veteran of more than 50 theater roles, several on Broadway, including "Rhinoceros, "Streamers," "The Penny Wars," the musical "Billy," and "'The Sign in Sidney Brustein's Window." Born in New York. Sweet was introduced to acting as a prisoner of war in Germany during World War II, when he took part i in a one-act play with his fellow POWs. With a Master's degree in English and comparative drama from Columbia University, Sweet said he was ready to hurl himself into acting after the war. PUBLIC NOTICE PUBLIC NOTICE Marianne E.
