Sunday, March 21, 1982 Santa Cruz Sentinel 65 Sports Digest Defensive Coach Three Goals LONDON (AP) Defender Graham Roberts scored three goals Saturday as Tottenham Hotspur beat Southampton 3-2. The setback dropped Southampton from first place in the English League soccer race. Swansea beat Wolverhampton 1-0 and moved into the lead, one point ahead of Southampton with two games in hand. Swansea has 56 points in 30 games and Southampton 55 from 32 games. Then comes Manchester United with 53 from 29, and Liverpool and Ipswich, both with 51 from 28.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) Nebraska football Coach Tom Osborne has named named defensive line coach Charlie McBride as the team's defensive coordinator, pending approval of the Board of Regents. Nebraska was without a defensive coordinator last year after Osborne did not replace Lance Van Zandt, who left the post for a job with the New Orleans Saints after the 1980 season. McBride is starting his sixth year at Nebraska. Prior to joining the Nebraska staff, McBride served seven years as an assistant at Wisconsin, his final season as defensive coordinator for the Badgers.

An all-Big Eight Conference end and punter for the University of Colorado in 1961, McBride played one year with the Denver Broncos. He coached three years under Frank Kush at Arizona State before joining the Wisconsin staff. Irish Victory PARIS (AP) France beat Ireland 22-9 Saturday but the Irish won the Five Nations Rugby Union Tournament outright for the first time since 1974. Ireland won three matches and lost one for six points, while England and Scotland tied for second with five points on 2-1-1 records. France and Wales shared fourth and last place with two points each on records of 1-3.

In Cardiff, Wales, Scotland whipped Wales 34-18 and ended Wales' 28-game streak at home without a defeat. The Scots won at Cardiff's Arms Park for the first time for 20 years. 'i ''ifi if mm Criterium Race Series To Return A strong field of riders is unfolding, as entries are coming in from all over California and other states for the Watsonville Criterium and Capitola Criterium bicycle races next weekend. Both events are to include events for the top riders, in the Senior 1 and Senior 2 classes, while the other classes are split between the two days. The Watsonville Criterium is to be held Saturday, starting at 12 p.m., at Brewington Ave.

near California and St. The Capitola Criterium is set for Sunday, starting at 8 a.m. at Capitola Village. The Senior 3 riders, Senior 4 riders, veterans and a stock high school racers join the Senior events at Watsonville. Intermediates, juniors, midgets, women and the Mechanic's Race precede the 35-lap main event at Capitola.

The Mechanics Race is a one-lap special event, in which local bicycle mechanics, providing their own bikes and tools, must assemble a partly-disassembled bicycle (in a hurry), then ride one lap around the criterium circuit. The bikes are not completely taken apart to start with after all, spectators might become a bit weary watching the mechanics put together chains link by link, and wheels spoke by spoke. The race was quite popular last year and promises to have more entrants and more excitement this year. Both the Watsonville and Capitola events are sadly short of volunteers to help out on the day of the race as course marshalls. People are to be stationed at the various intersections along the courses, maintaining barricades, warning spectators of approaching cyclists, and providing information.

Those interested in assisting with the races may call 425-8638. There is to be a race personnel meeting Turs-day at 7 p.m. at 414Vi Soquel Ave. BOB LEIBOLD Called Up Sea Lions Drop Pair The UCSC Sea Lions repeated a losing formula as they dropped a pair of volleyball matches this weekend on their home court. UCSC fell to Chico State on Friday in four games, then lost again Saturday night to Cal-State Humboldt in five.

In each loss the Sea Lions led in the deciding game, but then let up and allowed the vistors to rally to victory, said UCSC Coach Steve Slivkoff. On Friday, UCSC led the fourth game 13-6 before allowing Chico State to score nine straight points to earn the win. On Saturday, UCSC led 13-5 in the fifth game and let the winners take the match with 10 unanswered points. "We've been playing up and down," said Slivkoff, whose Sea Lions slipped to 5-7 overall on the season. "We haven't found our consistancy.

It's been a tough week. We've had finals this week and haven't been getting too much sleep. We didn't have any fight left when we needed it. We were just drained." Despite losing the two matches, Slivkoff had good things to say about the net play of Ned Andrews and Gary Gysen, along with the back line work of Randy Kurihira. UCSC is idle until April 1 when the Sea Lions travel to Aptos for a meeting with the Cabrillo Seahawks.

Santa Cruz has become a hotbed for annual men's and Calendar riOW Your Authorized 3 A rr EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) The Calgary Flames of the National Hockey League have called up defenseman Pat Ribble from Oklahoma City to bolster their injury-riddled blue line. Defensemen Phil Russell and Paul Re-inhart went home to Calgary instead of joining the team for a trip to Denver on Saturday, a team spokesman said. Center Jim Peplinski also is sidelined. Russell has muscle spasms, Reinhart has a groin injury and Peplinski is suffering lower back problems.

Ribble is a former Flame who returned to the team from the Washington Capitals last fall. He has been with the Stars of the Central Hockey League since then. Cycling Triumph SAN REMO, Italy (AP) Marc Gomez of France won the 73rd Milan-San Remo cycling race Saturday. Gomez was timed in 7 hours. 4 minutes and 12 seconds for the hilly 294-kilometer course.

In second place was France's Alain Bondue, 10 seconds behind the leader, hird was Italy's Mureno Argentin, 21:01 seconds off the pace. Mariners Prevail WATSONVILLE Aptos High's Mariners and the Watsonville Wildcats got back on the Softball field Friday afternoon. However, both teams were rusty due to inactivity caused by recent rains, as there were a total of 39 walks issued in the 18-15 non-league victory by Watsonville. "It was very frustrating," admitted Aptos Coach Karen Everett, Mariners slipped to 2-5 with the loss. Aptos took a 10-5 lead with a six-run outburst in the top of the sixth inning.

The Mariners scored their runs on just one hit' an RBI single by Vickie Pelich. Watsonville, which walked 20 in the game, issued five bases-on-balls in the inning and committed a costly error. Watsonville answered with a 13-run exploding in the bottom of the inning, when Mariners pitchers Laura Fennell and Leslie Jacobs walked 14 Wildcats and gave up three hits including a run-scoring double by Diane Rivera and an RBI single by Sylvia Martinez. Aptos added five runs in the top of the seventh, but came up three runs short. SC Tennis Tie Santa Cruz High's Cardinals finally found a big enough break in the clouds to get back on the tennis courts, but the rains returned before the match concluded, resulting in a 2-2 tie with the Carmel Padres Friday afternoon.

Santa Cruz' Paul Brooke and Peter Castillo both won singles matches in the non-league meeting. The No. 1 singles match between Cardinal Paul Daniel and Padre Olaf de Rourn was called due to rain with both players having won a set. Both doubles were rained out, resulting in the tie match at Santa Cruz High. 3 DEALER Introducing the Afew Service Team! MONDAY Baseball Harbor at North Monterey County, 3:30 p.m.

WEDNESDAY Baseball Lopez Extends Lead US VEGAS, Nev. (AP) Nancy Lopez-Melton shook off a double bogey on the ninth hole to fire a 3-under-par 69 Saturday and take a commanding 5-shot lead after three rounds of the $200,000 Scotch Pro-Am women's golf tournament. Lopez-Melton, who started the day two shots in front of Sandra Haynie, made five birdies and 12 pars on the par-72 Desert Inn Country Club course. She faltered only on the par-4 ninth when she hit her second shot long, flubbed a chip shot and three-putted for a six. Lopez-Melton finished the three rounds at 206, 11-under-par.

Haynie, after an even-par 72, was at 211, while Ayako Okamoto of Japan was third at 212. Okamoto, a star on the Japanese women's tour, shot a 4-under-par 68 to move into contention. She shared the day's best round with Patty Sheehan, last year's Ladies Professional Golf Association Rookie of the Year, who is at 3 under par for the tournament. Two-time defending champion Donna Caponi struggled to a 2-over 74 that left her well off the lead at 216. Judy Clark, three shots behind starting the third round, also had a 74 to finish at 214.

A non-winner in more than eight months, Lopez-Melton said the 5-shot lead was the biggest she's ever had going into the final round of a tournament. "Usually when I win a tournament, I come from behind," the winner of 23 LPGA events said. "I've only won one or two when I've been ahead." Lopez-Melton said she plans to attack the golf course during the final round and try to expand her lead rather than protect it. "I want to be aggressive," she said. "I'd love to win the tournament by a lot of shots, not just a few.

I've never done that before, it's always been a fight." THURSDAY Baseball North Monterey County at Soquel, 3:30 p.m. Softball Gavilan College at Cabrillo, 3 p.m. Alisal at Watsonville, 3:30 p.m. Golf Cabrillo College vs. Hartnell at Ft.
