NC State found a quarterback and a placekicker Saturday night but the Wolfpack couldn't find a victory After taking its first and only lead of the game with less than three minutes left NC State allowed Maryland a 69-yard drive and the winning points in a wild 30-26 loss at Byrd Stadium Maryland quarterback Neil O'Donnell hit Dean Green with a 10-yard touchdown pass with just 1 minute 20 seconds left for the victory The Wolfpack fell to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the ACC Maryland is now 2-1 and 1-0 Wolfpack quarterback Shane Montgomery who had taken over for starter Preston Poag late in the first half drove the Wolfpack to midfield in the final minute before being intercepted to end the game Despite the loss Montgomery may have earned himself the starter's job completing 24 of 28 passes for 312 yards But Montgomery wasn't the only discovery for the Wolfpack Damon Hartman a walk-on so obscure his name did not appear on the pre-game roster kicked a 25-yard field goal with 2:48 remaining to give NC State its only lead Hartman replacing previous starter Bryan Carter also kicked a 45-yarder as NC State dominated the Terps offensively through most of the second half In the first half the Wolfpack had trouble just holding and finding the football on this cold rainy night before 32291 at Byrd Stadium NC State's offense fumbled three times and its defense looked lost against Maryland's misdirection plays spotting the Terps a 16-point halftime lead The Pack's first-half fumbles set up Maryland's second touchdown for a 14-0 Terps lead and killed a promising NC State drive to Maryland's 28 Split end Eugene Peters gave up the fumble to kill the drive after catching a nine-yard pass from Montgomery late in the second quarter The Wolfpack defense so effective against the run in its first two games allowed the Terps to take advantage of those turnovers by overpursuing and losing the Terps' ballcarriers The Pack entered the game allowing only 48 yards per carry fourth best in the country then gave up 40 rushing yards in the first quarter alone to Maryland By running counter plays on the ground and play action on the pass plays Maryland took advantage of the very aggressiveness that had made NC State's defense so effective Terps quarterback Neil O'Donnell faked into the line then rolled out right to hit David Carr with the 32-yard pass that set up the game's first score Tailback Brian Lowery ran in from three yards out for the touchdown on the next play Misdirection again hurt the Wolfpack on the second Maryland touchdown when Terps running back Mike Beasley ran a counter play back left 14 yards into the end zone As the second quarter began the Wolfpack seemed to right itself going on an 11-play 69-yard drive into the end zone Rolling left Poag hit flanker Naz Worthen with a seven-yard touchdown pass The recovery was short-lived and again it was the overly aggressive nature of the NC State defense that let the Pack down 'O'Donnell went for the bomb and two Wolfpack defenders went for the interception missing the ball and allowing Beasley to slip behind them for a 72-yard touchdown pass By RICK BONNELL Staff Writer COLLEGE PARK Md NC
