oversimplification to say that today's Clemson-North Carolina ACC first-place showdown in Chapel Hill (4 pm ESPN) could come down to tailback play Advantage Tigers Huge advantage That's partly because the Tigers have three excellent first-year tailbacks and partly because of the twice-sprained ankle of Tar Heel sophomore Torin Dorn He might be as good as any Clemson runner but he's not as healthy "We're hoping Torin can play" said coach Dick Crum "But even if he does he won't be able to run like he did against Illinois He's running OK straight ahead but he doesn't have his normal cutting ability" Against the Illini in the season opener Dorn ran for 165 yards and two touchdowns but sprained an ankle at the end of a 69-yard run Since that play he has netted 84 yards and has not played in the past three games after reinjuring the ankle against Auburn After Dorn North Carolina's runners have been ordinary none showing the ability to make defenders miss them Eric Starr is the leader isn't there yet having rushed for 220 yards and a 42 average So the Tar Heels almost certainly will not have a rusher come close to 1000 yards for the second time in the past three seasons That from a program which leads the NCAA with 18 1000- yard rushers including at least one for an NCAA-record 12 straight seasons (1973-84) William Humes led the team in 1985 with 515 yards Clemson has three Hawks had more than enough breezing to a 114-97 victory over Washington Friday night and spoiling the NBA regular-season debut of 5-3 Bullets guard Tyrone "Muggsy" Bogues a rookie from Wake 014 Forest and one of several new 41 41 players on the Bullets roster started the game and contributed 10 points six assists and four steals in 31 minutes But the Hawks returning with the pat hand of players that won 57 games and the Central Division Wilkins championship last season took all the suspense out of this one before the crowd of 16064 had warmed their seats in the Omni Atlanta streaked to a 15-4 lead in the first four minutes hitting six of its first eight shots while the icy shooting Bullets hit just one of six That set a pattern as the Hawks went on to lead 36-19 after the first quarter briefly by 30 midway through the second period and 73-45 at halftime Atlanta forward Dominique Wilkins had 34 points and 14 rebounds to pace the victory And he got a lot more help with five
