earner when her husband was a student at Harvard University and Cornell University Medical College "Despite the fact that I had five children (one died) I baby-sat other people's children at our home during the day and went out to work nights in department stores and restaurants so that my husband could study" she said Elisabeth Broderick said she and her husband eventually bought an exclusive home in La Jolla had five vehicles and traveled around the world frequently She also had $8000 ball gowns and often hosted large parties she said But the idyllic life was shattered she said after her husband "became entangled with his office help" referring to Linda Kolkena whom Daniel Broderick had hired as a paralegal However he "never once" acknowledged having a romantic affair with Linda she said saying Broderick "accused her of being old fat boring ugly crazy stupid etc" In the December 1986 court declaration Elisabeth Broderick said she had a small home with insufficient bedroom space for their children but that he ex-husband had remodeled his new home adding a pool and a tennis court Betty Broderick's attorney Mark Alexander Wolf commented "You will find there's a great deal of prejudice in the legal community against Betty but there's a big difference between lawyers and people" Wolf said "People are praying for her People understand what she has gone through and they're in her Other documents suggest Daniel Broderick felt helpless to stop the alleged harassment even after the divorce was finalized in 1986 He married Linda Kolkena his legal assistant last April Dan Broderick said he eventually won full custody of the children after a child psychologist Dr Stephen Sparta said the children should be keep away from their mother because her conduct could cause them "permanent emotional damage" He obtained a court order preventing her from coming within 100 yards of his residence but he said she came there when he was away and destroyed property several times She also drove her Chevrolet Suburban into his house one evening when he and his daughters Kim and Lee were in the kitchen fixing dinner he said The front door was broken down and walls and brickwork extensively damaged he added He managed to restrain his ex-wife even after she reached for a "large butcher knife under the seat" of the car he reported She was then taken to a county mental hospital The Times reported that Broderick imposed fines on her deducting them from her monthly check of $9036 He fined her $100 for every offensive word on the telephone $250 if she came near his new house $500 if she stepped inside the home and 81000 if she saw their sons without clearing it with him Betty Broderick conceded to the court that she was responsible for some of the destruction but said she felt justified because her ex-husband ignored her problems She said in a second declaration dated January 1987 that although she had worked hard to sustain their PRECOM 515e from page A3 berOme optimistic that he could Mate it" lielm was rescued 89 hours after 671-magnitude quake crumbled tbetypress Street viaduct portion of and buried him alive His injuries included broken ribs a crushed ankle and kidney failure as a result of dehydration Although Helm remained in intensive care he recently was listening to music communicating with his family using hand signals and had a "very positive outlook" his doctor Said McDonald said he couldn't have known Helm had arterial blockage and a thickening of the heart muscle without sophisticed heart studies and "couldn't have treated him differently if we'd known" He learned of Helm's pre-existing coronary condition from the coroner's office "Buck Helm never had a reason to have this discovered about him" he said The doctor said Helm also had high blood pressure and diabetes About 7 pm Saturday McDonald said two nurses noticed Helm gasping for breath Physicians tried to revive him but within minutes he said "it was obvious the heart was not going to respond and he died" "His heart stopped and that was the cause of death" he said "but the underlying cause was all the trauma his other organs had sustained" Every organ in Helm's body received some damage McDonald said A "major amount of infection" coming either from Helms lungs where he had minor pneumonia or from one of two infected areas in his abdomen got into Helm's bloodstream and caused a "poisonous effect" McDonald said Helm had been taking antibiotics since last Thursday McDonald said But while drugs help an infection "has to be fought fought by a person's immune system" he said "If the infection is overwhelming a person might have no ability to ward it off" Shaw said that despite Helm's death no one will forget his bravery and the symbol of hope he became to those recovering from the quake "Through all of this Buck is a hero" he said "As sad as (his death) is he gave everyone a good shot in the arm It was a big morale boost everyone" SAN DIEGO A prominent attorney wrote his ex-wife a letter warning her not to kill him three years before his death in an alleged murder by the former spouse the Los Angeles Times reported Daniel Broderick III was fatally shot Nov 5 in the bedroom of his home as he slept alongside his new wife Linda who also was killed Broderick once headed the San Diego County Bar Association Broderick's first wife Elisabeth remains jailed at the Las Colinas Women's Detention Center charged with the murders Elisabeth "Betty" Broderick has pleaded innocent and further court proceedings are pending Police say she waged a years-long campaign of harassment against the former husband and his second wife Left behind is her ex-husband's letter from three years ago dated Halloween 1986 the Times said "I know your first impulse upon reading this letter will be a violent one" he told Betty Broderick in a letter detailing deductions from her monthly spousal support check The letter continued: "You have told the kids that if I withhold any money this month you will kill me and see that not a brick is left standing in my house "You better think twice about that If you make any attack on me or my property you will never again get a red cent out of me without a court order You better take a minute to think about the implications of that before you go on a rampage" The letter and hundreds of pages of other court records and financial papers obtained by the Los Angeles Times chronicle how the Brodericks' marriage unraveled in a long and bitter fight over money respect and custody of their four children Daniel Broderick who was also a doctor kept an unsigned copy of the letter and later attached it to legal papers filed with his divorce case The letter now is defaced reportedly by Betty Broderick
