fo SATURDAY, APRIL is, 1953 5 i i i i Church Of Christ r- US. Elders Direct All Phases Of Church Work Bible School Is Important Part Of Church Activities Associat Sunday marks the formal open- Ing of a new church structure in known as the Pruett and Lobit Church of Christ. It mark the beginning of a new era in the life of the old Murrill Street Church of Christ as the plant will make room for growth in all phases of the church work. The old church building, located on Murril! street, has served its purpose. The Murrill street plant was begun in late 1928, two years'after the church was organized.

Only a small building was constructed in the beginning but it soon became inadequate. So, the members moved the building 'to another lot the church owned and began the church auditorium. The first building was used for class rooms. When first organized in October, 1926, the group of 10 members met in the old YMCA building. But, they wanted their own building, so by borrowing money and digging deep in their own pockets they began building.

The'story'of the church is one The new air conditioned auditorium of the Church of Christ located on North Pruett will seat 600 people with the possible addition of 100 seats in the balcony. The over-all floor area, including classrooms and auditorium, is 93 feet wide and 1-46 feet long. The auditorium itself is 61 by 100 feet. Light asphalt tile covers the floor with opera type seats in a natural stain providing seating arrangements. The inside walls are painted mosonary with brick columns supporting the roof.

Roof trusses rest on a concrete girder with air conditioning ducts concealed behind these girders. The ceiling is beam jd with the bottom member of tHe truss finished with wood' Between the trusses Is a random pattern of acoustical ceiling material. The entire auditorium is completely wired for sound facilities. A raised brick platform is situated" between two side entrances which are concealed by permanent screen. The baptistry is raised about 10 feet above the auditorium floor.

It is of a concrete structure With tile finish. There are large planting boxes on each side of the baptistry and on the front of the winged walls. The color scheme includes light tile with the ceiling beams and opera chairs in a natural finish. The acoustical panels are off-white and the side walls a deep forest as arc the screen panels. -Brick is a salmon pink- In the back of the auditorium preparations have been made for a balcony to be used when the church needs it.

At present it is used as a junior auditorium to care for the young people's recreation need's. Another feature of the new church is the children's room located to the rear of the auditorium. It is separated from the auditorium by double plate glass windows. A public address system is wired to the room so that the preaching- services can be heard in the room but no sound inside the double glass can get out. It is finished in painted plywood and contains necessary sanitary facilities.

There are 19 classrooms in the building and they are all constructed along the same lines. The walls are of masonary construction with painted structural concrete floors- Windows are of aluminum sash with redwood trim. Some of the classrooms can be thrown together by means of collapsible partitions. Classrooms are also air conditioned. Dominant architectural structure of the exterior' is a steep gabled roof.

Blocks on each side of the building at front are light in color and oppose the thrust of the long rafters- which, support the roof of the entrance porch. The blocks contain the cloors to the side aisles. The roof is of white asbestos Concealed illumination lights the building front at night from behind the- large rafters which support the roof. The outside of the classrooms which surround the auditorium.are of salmon pink brick resting on concrete beams and capped with a continuous structural concrete beam which supports the insulating concrete roof deck- Front doors to the church aro walnut finished with stain and left in the natural grain. of progress. It was the first Church of Christ congregation in the Baytown area. Then one was organized in Highlands, later one in east Baytown and another in central Baytown. Seeing that their church was outgrowing the buildings, the Murrill Street Church of Christ began a fund drive among members to solicite money for a new church. There was no outside solicitation nor any special drive in the church.

The members just gave. Beginning with eight adults and two children in 1926, the church now has an average of 425 people in services. Bible school attendance average is between 275 and 300 per Sunday. Sunday contributions average close to 5600. In 1950 the church built a 520,000 parsonage at 600 West Lobit.

There have been several ministers that have served the church during its life. W. R. Smith was the first. He was present for the organization and was also superintendent of Goose Creek school district.

After Smith came Thomas Hose. Leonard Bankhead, Bela Watson, Osby Weaver arid the present minister, W. E. Irvine who came to Baytown in the early fall of 1949. Over $100.000 has been contributed toward the building program by members without any special drives, according to the minister, Irvine.

This was given along with the regular offerings which have met the yearly church budget of $30,000. Nm the Pruett and Lobit Streets Church of Christ have a new $140,000 air conditioned church plant. The church will be open from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday for public inspection. The Pruett and Lobit Street Church of Christ has no organizations within the church but functions under the direction of three elders.
