Baber Morphew Continued from Page 21 7 1 I tr )1I 1 A A la 1 A-4 t''' I '1 "10' 1 1 1 I 1 i i'''l I 4 I 4 -vm--k i 1 1 I ts l- 1 Added Allen glad it's over It was a process I didn't like but it had to be done the way it was I understand it's a business and you have consultants working with the company's money The process is longer than it should be" The Baber's reaction is not surprising according to Christman who has been Milwaukee's Northern California and Nevada territorial scout for two years and also signed former Christian Brothers star Bo Dodson last year "It's an emotional thing and there's a lot of hard-nosed business" Christman said "But we stuck by each other Everything went well We came to terms that both sides are very happy with "It's not uncommon for a kid to feel that way He's young and all he's worried about is playing on the field Until its dealt with it's still very new and foreign to them They don't know the business" Following his signing the ball started rolling fast But Baber can get to the business he knows which is hitting and fielding He knows the scouts have been calling him a potential superstar Now it's time to see if the dream will come true Baber is realistic "If I play half as well as that I'll be just fine" LaRue said "I feel like what I did in high school can be carried over with a little knowledge and the will to win "I'm just going to do the best I can If! turn out to be a superstar I'm a superstar If! just make it to the majors I'm just another guy to play in the bigs But I'm going to do everything I can do to make it" "Superstars are a needle in the haystack" Christman said "If you can predict them I don't think there's one person on Earth who can but as far as a gut feeling we drafted LaRue didn't we? And we signed him didn't we? But this is only the first step" Continued from Page 19 until 1977 when he became Cordova High's head basketball coach Sutter won five league and two North Section titles during Morphew's tenure as the school changed leagues twice from the Butte View League to the Westside League to the Sacramento Valley League At Cordova Morphew's teams won four Metro League championships and a Sac-Joaquin Section championship before he moved over to ARC six seasons ago In all his high school teams won 148 of 202 games For all of Morphew's postscason success with the Beavers ARC didn't win its first Camino Norte Conference tide under his leadership until this year After a slow start the Beavers won 12 of their last 16 games including playoff contests "The conference is so strong in basketball and in all sports" said Morphew who is also an assistant women's softball coach at ARC "It's probably the strongest overall conference in the state" Still this wasn't the most talented team Morphew has coached at ARC "We didn't have a talent-laden team this year" Morphew said "We won because we had smart kids coachable kids They put it together" American River's athletic director Dr Bruce Werner said Morphew's greatest attribute is that he relates well with his players and other young people "He has a great deal of expertise in the field of basketball and he's a good teacher" Werner said "He gets his ideas across to the kids and his athletes play hard for him Ile's a good motivator" ARC is going to need plenty of motiva choose between a professional baseball career or college scholarship "The scholarship was a serious thing to consider" LaRue said "But I felt all along if it was right I was going to sign I was thinking 'If! went to school would I still be drafted? Would I get hurt in You never know "But I'm not worried (I'm missing out on anything) I figure if I was good enough to get a scholarship now I can go back and play in three or four years I made the best decision for me right now I love baseball and my dream is to play pro baseball" Allen who handled the contract negotiations for his son was in favor of whatever LaRue wanted "First of all I wanted to know what LaRue wanted to do" he said "When he told me he wanted to play pro ball we had to weigh the offer versus going to Arizona Once he decided that he wanted to play that's what we were going for "It was the scholarship versus the bonus I don't know what it costs to go to the University of Arizona but they made it worth our while not to go" With the decision of whether to sign or grab Arizona's scholarship offer out of the way LaRue was left smarting from the one day of contract bargaining Thursday Though his father attempted to prepare him nothing was quite like the real thing Both were complimentary of the way Christman handled himself and represented the Brewers but LaRue was still "shocked" "You had to be ready for anything" LaRue said "I think someone should explain what's going to happen It's so business-like it's a shock to you Different kids need to be dealt with different ways" Neighbors Hup Morphew a resident of El Dorado Hills gives instructions to his players during baskeball practice earlier this year Lion next season Because of realignment the CNC will have only five teams for basketball next season "They threw realignment at us really late and there wasn't time to go out and find anybody else" Morphew said "Whoever ends up in the playoffs is going to be hurt because they don't have the good competition" Somehow though it figures that Morphew like his predecessors Woody Hutchison and John Karsten will find a way to successfully deal with the problem 1 kM -------1 I in I 0t I I ti 6 ols(' 10v- --Vi 0 I LI ti ''''bi do i i 1 111 0
