2-1 NHL victory over the Philadelphia Flyers Kurri scored his second goal of the game and 48th of the season by bursting down the left side and lifting a shot past Flyers' goal-tender Darren Jensen It was Philadelphia's first overtime loss of the season in seven games The teams battling it out for first place overall a position worth $200000 and home-ice advantage through the playoffs had been tied at 1 since late in the second period Philadelphia had the better of the play in the third period and had some excellent scoring chances as Brian Propp and Pelle Eklund missed from point-blank range 28 ROCKINGHAM When Terry Labonte woke up Sunday the first thing he said to his wife Kim wasn't "Good morning" Instead Labonte's words were "I think I'm going to run good I really believe I'm going to have a good day" Labonte was looking ahead to the Goodwrench 500 stock car race in which he was to start from the pole position at noon Labonte had better than a good day He enjoyed one of the best dominating the NASCAR Winston Cup Series event and flashing across the NC Motor Speedway finish line four car lengths in front of Harry Gant That his sunrise prediction came true was especially enjoyable for Labonte because of some lessthan-flattering speculation about his High Point-based team during the offseason With veteran crew chief Dale Inman departing to reunite with Richard Petty some predicted little success for Labonte's outfit "We had a lot of personnel changes along with changing from Chevrolets to Oldsmobiles and some people thought we'd fall on our faces" Labonte said "But the way it has turned out this team works better together than any one I've ever been with Everybody has a lot of Input If I want to try something on the car I can "This win takes a lot of pressure off Everybody was watching us and we knew it We knew we had to prove ourselves" Labonte led 304 of 492 laps a feat he credited to being able to run low on the 1017-mile track throughout Third-place finisher Richard Petty also termed it a "good day" for his team "Midway through the race we lost our brakes for some reason" said Petty who led for 62 laps "We finally got some brake fluid In the car on the last pit stop and got a bit of brakes back "But by then we had jacked so much wedge into the car to make It get through the turns without brakes that we had everything way off and couldn't run with the leaders at the end We still had a good day" It appeared that a LabonteGeoff Bodine duel for the checkered flag was building but that possibility evaporated on lap 459 when the engine in Bodine's Chevrolet went sour "I heard this terrible sound" said Bodine who was racing on Labonte's bumper "The engine sputtered and puffed a little smoke It probably dropped a valve or broke a timing chain "We were ready to give Terry a run He was real strong but we could stay close" It was a rough day for Ford fans who saw Thunderbirds win 14 superspeedway races last year A Ford was in front for only one lap when Kyle Petty led under caution "We didn't have what it took to win today" said Cale Yarborough Ptiliodolphis Edmonton 0 1 0 0-1 0 1 0 1-2 Labonte Holds Off Gant For 1 MEZErESSEE1 Continued From Page IC Gant gave a strong effort to finish second the third time in the last four Rockingham races that he has been the runner-up For the last 50 laps Gant drove with only his left hand using the right to hold his Chevrolet in gear Earlier he'd sped to the ragged edge to make up a lap lost because of a cut tire He lost the lap on 101 and got it back on 435 beating Labonte back to the start-finish line as the yellow came out "I'm tickled with the second place because of all the trouble we had" said Gant "With about 50 miles or so left the car kept jumping out of gear I had hands everywhere trying to keep the car on the track and in high gear" It is the 25th time Gant has finished second in his Winston Cup career including 12 times in the last three years He has won nine times but never at Rockingham Richard Petty finished third in the lead lap although he drove approximately the final 100 laps without brakes on his Pontiac A lap down in fourth and fifth came Morgan Shepherd in a Buick and Chevrolet-driving Darrell Waltrip Completing the top 10 were Cale Yarborough Bill Elliott Dale Earnhardt Neil Bonnett and Lake Speed Waltrip appeared poised to challenge but bad luck cost him a lap As he pitted on lap 435 the yellow flag was shown for Kirk Bryant's spin on the backstretch Labonte also had started in for service but was able to swerve back onto the track and stay out thus getting a "free" stop Waltrip never made up the deficit Chief mechanical victim was Geoff Bodine who kept his Chevrolet in contention with Labonte much of the way before experiencing engine failure on lap 459 while running second He was forced to park Labonte started from the pole after qualifying Thursday at a record 146348 mph After leading the first nine laps he turned conservative and watched as Petty Earnhardt and Bodine took turns at the front Earnhardt led 70 laps Petty 62 and Bodine 44 But when the time came to go Labonte's baby blue Oldsmobile was clearly the class of the field He led 255 of the last 270 laps Including 144 of the final 145 A capacity crowd was estimated at 47500 for the season's third race Those that came in anticipation of further fireworks from Earnhardt and Waltrip principals in a controversial wreck a week earlier at Richmond saw hardly a spark Although the two Chevrolet drivers raced for position several times they had only one close encounter a minor tap in the second turn on lap 457 Earnhardt is to have a hearing in Charlotte today on his appeal of the $5000 fine and year's probation imposed by NASCAR for his part in the Richmond crash Others however brought out the caution flag eight times mostly for single-car spins or brushes with the wall There was one multi-car crash on lap 48 Involving the cars of Rick Newsom Bobby Hi Ilin Mike Waltrip and Bryant No one was hurt in the front-stretch incident Fifty yellow-flag laps held Labonte's average speed to 120488 mph as he earned $44500 for his sixth career triumph That purse put Labonte 28 over $3 million in career winnings The win was the first in NASCAR's big-time for an Oldsmobile since Buddy Baker took the Winston 500 at Talladega Ala in 1980
