Ton Son a By TOM HIGGINS Staff Writw DAYTONA BEACH Fla A record 25 drivers sped past the 200 mph mark In Daytona 500 qualifying Monday but the one who has been the fastest stayed the fastest Bill Elliott winner of 11 pole positions last year on NASCAR's Winston Cup circuit picked up that pace again by whipping to the No 1 spot at 205039 mph in a Ford The other front row berth for Sunday's season opening race was taken by Chevrolet-driving Geoff Bodine with a fast lap of 204545 at Daytona International Speedway Only those two positions were decided Monday in the rain-delayed time-trial session The rest of the speeds simply determine the starting order for two 125-mile qualifying races on Thursday with the finish of them setting the lineup for the 500 "I'm really surprised to be back on the pole here again And I'm especially surprised to be on it with this speed said a flu-bitten Elliott who rolled to a record 205114 lap last February on the 25-mile track "Like everybody else I expected it to go up some to maybe 206 this year" Wind gusting up the home straightaway at 21 mph generally was blamed for slowing cars individually cutting rpm by as much as 300 and buffeting the vehicles between turns three and four The number of drivers exceeding 200 mph was the greatest in NASCAR history The previous record for qualifiers at 200-plus was 18 in last May's Winston 500 at Alabama International Motor Speedway The record at Daytona was seven in the 500 of 1985 Following Elliott and Bodine in the 204 mph class were surprising Sterling Marlin Cale Yarborough and Terry Carolinas isn't played in the ACC There are 55 other four-year schools out there who have basketball teams and dozens of players having banner years They are players you seldom hear about Players who for one reason or another aren't in the ACC and weren't even recruited by ACC teams Point guards who are a half-step slow or a few inches too short Shooters whose other skills are limited Big men who aren't quite big enough mobile enough or hostile enough But there are some outstanding players Players like 6-9 Craig Cordes of Pfeiffer 6-7 Fred McKinnon of Winthrop and 6-4 Ben Davis of Gardner-Webb All at the top of their level and all characterized by their coaches and coaches from other schools as excellent role models on and off the court "Cordes" said Belmont Abbey coach Eddie Payne "is the best big man in the district (NAIA District 26) in the five years I've been at Abbey If he gets it inside he'll score And you can't keep him from getting it" Cordes a 235-pound senior from nearby Albemarle is leading the district in scoring at 232 points and is averaging 94 rebounds He has played the last three seasons at Staff Photo By CANDACE FREELAND McKinnon of Winthrop 6-9 Craig Cordes of Pfeiffer and 6-4 Ben Davis of Gardner-Webb Team Leaders: Three of the most respected players in the Carolinas are (from left) 6-7 Fred Clinton Hinton was in the athletic dormitory at Oral Roberts Saturday His teammates at Oral Roberts had a basketball game in St Louis His old teammates at UNCC had a game against Western Kentucky in Bowling Green Ky His other old teammates at Eastern Kentucky were playing Austin Peay But Hinton a 6-7 sophomore was stuck in the dorm He had nobody to knock around or dazzle on the basketball court and his people were miles away Hinton grew up in Charlotte and his friends girlfriend and mother were back home The situation was one only a telephone company could love: Hinton said he averages nine calls to Charlotte a week Hinton has an active odometer Before he went to UNCC he spent a year at Laurinburg Institute But last season his journey seemed to have come to an end He led the 49ers in scoring with 168 points a game played with energy and enthusiasm which is not easy on a bad team and was named the Sun Belt Conference's freshman of the year But Hinton was suspended from UNCC after the 1984-85 academic year because of grades He went 1 'ifiviiks to summer school and he 00 said picked up 14 credits it He and 44 other students in i'' l'" similar situations applied to 114 'I: a UNCC academic commit- fs '''''''f tee for readmission But his late progress was not '12115' 4: enough and the committee 6 ''s denied his request Hinton The committee made its decision in late August Hinton was bitter because the decision left little time for him to shop for another school He thought the committee should have processed his application earlier He also was mad because although he had failed to meet UNCC standards he had met the NCAA's Since Hinton coultli't be a college basketball player without a college he hastily transferred to Eastern Kentucky "But me and the coach (Max Good) didn't get along" said Hinton "He wanted me to cut my hair (at UNCC Hinton featured a new hair cut every two weeks) and I didn't know what all I had to do He said not to lift weights" Weights are to Hinton a very strong inside player who almost got in a tangle with Georgia Tech's Bruce Dalrymple during a game at the Charlotte Coliseum last season what jump shots are to a small-town kid from Indiana Said Hinton: "He (Good) said 'Have you looked in the mirror Indeed Hinton had and he liked what he saw Hinton decided to leave But his next school had to be the right one A player is like a used car in that his value drops when the numbers on the odometer get too high So he called Bob Nastase for whom he had played at Myers Park High Nastase told him that Haywood Workman who had played with Hinton at Myers Park was at Oral Roberts Workman had transferred there from Winston-Salem State "So I talked to Haywood" said Hinton "I knew he would tell me the truth He was sitting out and we would have three years to play together So I went out there" And thus was born what is on paper the biggest mismatch since Jed Clampett moved to Beverly Hills Hinton you have to understand is a lover of fun who never met a party he didn't like To walk with him across the UNCC campus last year was to be stopped at least twice by women who the night before had been at the designated place at the designated time and wondered why he was not Hinton said he's adjusted his style a bit "It's real religious" said Hinton "You've got to wear a shirt and a tie every day to class You have to go to church two hours on Tuesday and Thursday And people are always saying 'I'll pray for you' and all of that When I got here I was like It was a big change" Last month Hinton decided to return to UNCC By now he was more homesick than bitter He called friends at the school nobody in the basketball department almost daily for information Could he get in? What would he have to do? The news was bad: he likely would have to sit out the 1986-87 season and forfeit a year of eligibility So he expects to stay at Oral Roberts "It's a long shot now" Hinton said about transferring "I don't want to go through a whole lot of changes I'd like to prove a point that I can study and can do the work" It should be noted though that Hinton did ask his girlfriend a UNCC student to send him an admission application Frankly the situation is unfortunate Hinton was likeable talented and a great interview He was a basketball player in an enforcer's body and with him UNCC would be a better team Instead he's out there in Tulsa a tie around his neck and a book under his arm He's not evrn allowed to go to parties anymore "Well" he said "you're not supposed to" Pfeiffer after transferring from Western Carolina where a freshman Injury and general disenchantment set in His switch has meant a lot to him but probably more to his team Last season with Cordes storming the lane the Falcons went 239 won the district title and one game in the 32-team NAM tournament in Kansas City McKinnon also is a transfer moving to Winthrop after one year at Florida College in Tampa in his native state This season he is averaging 216 points and 71 rebounds Assistant coach Billy Mims spotted McKinnon when he was scouting another player expressed interest as a future prospect but got a call from McKinnon the next week He was ready to transfer right away after averaging six points on a team of sophomores "That was just a case of being in the right place at the right time" said Mims "A lot of schools were after him but wanted him the next year" Winthrop head coach Nie Id Gordon who is retiring with more than 400 victories after this season calls McKinnon "Silky smooth and the best shooting forward I've ever had" GardnerWebb coach Jim Wiles still doesn't know why Davis was so available "He's from Clio SC in an area known for real good players" said Wiles "and he averaged 27 points and has always been a good student But the only major (school) interested in him was Jacksonville He had come to our camp and we recruited him hard and lucked out" Davis averages 212 points most of which he gets on a jump shot that is considered the best in the district Other top non-ACC players in the Carolinas are: Linwood Moye South Carolina 6-6 senior: Helped San Jacinto (Texas) See STARS Page 46 Florida Free Throws Bury UNCC Johnson Smith Pays Back Paine By TRACY ALLEN) 44 6-1C Staff WO Johnson Smith had a debt to settle with Paine on Monday at Brayboy Gym And the Golden Bulls made every effort to cash in as they fought off Paine for a 67-60 nonconference college basketball victory It was one triumph the Golden Bulls (13-8) won't forget since they still remember a heartbreaking 67-59 loss to the Lions on Jan 18 in Athens Ga Smith had cut a 15-point second-half deficit in that game to three but was unable to come all the way back "This was sweet because we wanted revenge on these guys" said Smith senior guard James Shockley Shockley and Vincent Brown led the Golden Bulls with 14 points apiece Monday "They tried to run the score up on us down at their gym But we came back and made It reasonable this time" The Golden Bulls weren't going to get blown out this time but they definitely had their work cut out for them While Smith was thinking revenge Paine was thinking STAN OLSON Staff Writer The way UNCC coach Jeff Mullins sees it games like Monday night's 72-64 Sun Belt Conference college basketball loss to South Florida simply shouldn't happen in the Charlotte Coliseum But Monday's happened anyway and dropped the 49ers to 0-8 In the Coliseum this season "Tonight it was almost like it was their home court not ours" Mullins said "They certainly appeared more confident than we did It's our court though and we've got to go out and protect it "When you're learning to win one of the first things you have to learn to do Is to protect that home court" South Florida did Indeed appear comfortable on the Coliseum floor stifling a UNCC rally down the stretch by cooly hitting its last 18 free throws including 14 in the final three minutes two seconds That foul-line accuracy enabled the Bulls to thwart a UNCC comeback that had brought the 49ers to within four points three times in the final minute The loss was UNCC's 12th straight and dropped the 49ers to 0-11 in the Sun Belt and 5-17 overall The Bulls are now 4-6 in the league and 12-10 in all games South Florida played it smart remaining in a 2-3 zone for most of the game and paying particular defensive attention to forward Mike Milling and guard Keith WilHams UNCC's primary offensive weapons "We got off some people to congest it a little for Milling and Williams" explained South FlorIda coach Lee Rose who once coached at UNCC "We left some of the others open and tonight it worked out for us" Lately it's been working out for everybody who plays UNCC Other than Milling and Williams See
