41110 THE CHARLOTTE OBSERVER Saturday March 1986 Carew Is A Star Without A Ball Club Ruttman Paces 2nd Rockingham Runs Ru-tt Roc 11i ki kl: :::::0 :04: 1 bat away from a pennant Some talk about getting by with a cheaper player Some indicate Carew is overqualified "The man's a Hall of Famer" says Bill Lajoie of the Tigers "How do you ask a guy like that to be a part-time player or a pinch hitter or to play for $60000?" Go ahead says Carew demean All he wants is to play ball He will make no demands about salary or playing time He is 40 but he has always remained slim and trim and he thinks he can still play He has not given up hope that someone will call But as each day passes the reality gets closer He may not play baseball again "I know I can still play the game" he says "I can't do the things I once did but I can still do some things I can still hit I know what they're saying I don't bit home runs But not every DH is a home run hitter I know I can come off the bench and hit and I don't play the game like a 40-year old" Joe Ruttman QUALIFYING taAt 01 c) RA' EA 4i 0" Continued From Page IC general manager Mike Port failed to offer a contract Six years with the Angels went down the drain "What they did to me was a slap In the face" Carew says "They just said they weren't going to offer me a contract and I just said 'OK' I think I deserved more respect" Can't anybody use a 328 lifetime hitter who batted 280 last season? It is unthinkable that Rod Carew will not be playing baseball somewhere this summer yet the telephone does not ring In the Carew household The personnel office does not call The case against Carew built after discussions with a half dozen major league general managers is as follows: He is 40 ancient by the standards of this young man's game He would probably demand too much money He is a one-position player He is basically a singles and doubles hitter who has never had high home run or RBI totals Most teams plan to go with 24-man rosters instead of the customary 25 Given the opportunity Carew can effectively and passionately refute each of those reasons That's the problem Nobody calls He is one of only 16 players in baseball history to have accumulated more than 3000 hits and yet he is being discarded like an old shoe "He doesn't drive in a lot of runs and he plays a position where you look for an RBI man" says Pat Gil lick of the Blue Jays "If you needed that one extra bat to win you a pennant then you couldn't find a better guy to come off the bench" says Al Rosen of the Giants who are more than one 9 Rear Tine Tilley 811935 9 1 WHEN YOU BUY NOW A rtitt car I
