Destructive fire in Chariest? MM. Between tour and five o'clock on Sunday morning Hre was diseoveied- in the largo aud elegant new building of the Messrs. Sadler on Main street, adjoining the new county jail and the I fine building belonging to the estate of the late Humphrey" Keyes; and opposite the City Hotel, Messrs. Light cfc Mitch- il's drug store, and the property of Mr. Warren Eby.

The tire originated in the southwest corner of the building, in tho principal otlice of Messrs. Satterlee contractors for the S. V. 11. in the story, by some cause unknown, but supposed to have been accidental, and before water could be gotten upon it insufficient quantity 'he fir? had made its way under the tin rooting, here it could not be gotten at, and it was pooh ail efforts to save the building would be futile.

1 he engine was worked manfully, however,) and with the valuable aid of lines of buokets, the most strenuous efforts were made to retain the tire within the limits of tho burning building and prevent its tsj-jcad to tho other valuable property adjaceut, which in all probability would have involved a largo portion ot the finest properly iu the very heart oi tho town. The flames, however, gradually enveloped the entire building, and the end of it tailing against the county jail set tire to that building. The tlarnes were dually subdued, however, alter a portion of the roofing had been torn off so that a free application ot water coiiM be made. Shortly atterwards the Keys building was discovered to be on tiro at the point ot the intersection of the wing with the main building, but prompt efforts saved extensive damage. The outer frame of an upper window ot this building had already burned, but the inner tire proof door prevented the iu- gixss of the fire.

This building is of a lire-pvoot character, and now for tho second time has withstood an immense lire on its east side, standing like a bulwark of protection to the block of val uable buildings to the west of it. The Sadler building embraced it three large store rooms on lie lower floor, occupied respectively by the dry goods and grocery stores David llowell aud J. Kd. Hums, and furniture store of the Messrs. Sadler and on the upper floor three offices of Messrs.

Satterlee tV the hall of the J. O. Good Templars, otlice of Justice Burnett and law offices ot Frank Ui'ckwith aud Messrs. Baylor ilsuu. From the iirst, fforts were made to save everything in the building, and us tar as possible lluse were removed.

The spread of the tl unes, howevt prevented the removal ot notwithstaud the brave efforts ot ll.ose engaged some of whom almost risked their lives to rescue valuable; and many things were damagol in removal; some, we regret to say, were found missing being taken from tho building. At one period during the lire it was thought that an appeal would have to be made to inebt for the aid a portion ol its tire department, but the fire being gotten under co.ntri 1 it abandoned. are pleased to note, however, that the O. ii li. expressed a willingness Jo pince every accommodation at the service of our authorities, and were prepared to dispatch an nginc and cars Ml once to Winchester for aid.

The building ot the Messrs. Sadler was i led for Home ot New York, Aetna of Hart fold, North British, ami Pluonix, 51,000. Their slock was insured for in the Pea body of Wheeling, which there is a puitial loss by dam age. The county iil was damaged to the extent ot insured in the Jefferson Co. Burnt tt and Frank Bcckwith, each about $100 or less, in office furniture, books, etc.

no insurance. The iron safe of Mr. Frank Bcckwith, containing valuable books, bonds, Ac came out of the tire with contents almost entirely uninjured. During tne burning of the Sadler building a sharp explosion took place on the upper floor, supposed to have been a package ot caps for dynamite cartridges used on the S. V.

li. li. ery fortunately, a case of dynamite car- tridges, which had been iu the building were removed a few days before the tire. Our live insurance agents were energetic in their eflorts to save property, I ami are using every endeavor to make adjustment ot losses. Col.

1J. W. Baylor, President of the County Court, was in town promptly yesterday morning, and arranged with the insurance companies to have the jail repaired. The Messrs. Sadler will proceed ns speedily as possible to have a new brick building erected in place of the one just burned, and we uny thus hope ere long to see the waste handsomely improved.

Everything taken into consideration notwithstanding there is serious inconvenience and loss to some the general verdict in regard to the fire of Sunday morning is that we are a fortunate people, in that the losses were not much more seiious ar.d ol a most distressing character. I'. S. A contract has been made with Messrs. Philips and Holmes to re- pair the jail at ouce, and work has been commeheed upon it tin roofing by Duke Charlestown spirit.

The I "nited Brethren Sunday School of Iveedysvillo will pic nic on the old Camp Ground, on the pike between Boonsboro and Keedysville, on day, September G. The Lutheran Sunday School of Keedysville, the Monroe Chap? Sunday School and lr. Sunday School, ot Boonsboro, have been iuvited aud are expected to join in this pic uic. The Ilagcrstowii Agricultural Fair will commence on the first ot October next. TO PI lilJC.

In my card inserted in the last issue of the Shepherdstown Register, returning thanks for the services of those who aided in extinguishing the fire upon the premises of the late John U. Shepherd, deceased, in which I also criticised the indiffureoce of others who failed to render any assistance, no reference whatever in said criticism was made to or intended for Mr. Henry Shepherd, or his family, whose employees by his in struct ions were most promptly upon the spot and rendered signal and efficient service both in extinguishing and preventing the further spread of the fire.
