i i Progress-Bulletin, Pemene, Calif. Wednesday Oct. 16, 1963 Page 7, Sec. 4 Racin With Mason Donerail Paid Top Price in Derby By ERNIE MASON Turf Writer READERS rOST TIME Who was the longest priced winner of the Kentucky Derby and what year did Itegret win the race? Wasnt Regret the only filly to win the Derby? Harry S. Long, Pomona.

Donerail's win mutuel of $184.90 In the 1913 renewal of the Run for the Roses event is the record high payoff for its 89 runnings. His winning time for the mile and one-quarter was a mediocre 2:04 45 but it was good enough at that time to establish a new track record. You are correct in stating that Regret is the only filly to triumph over male rivals in the Kentucky Derby. She won by two lengths in 1913 and paid $7.30 as the public choice in the race. What is the longest distance thoroughbreds are allowed fo race? Ive heard of them going as far as 10 miles.

Do you happen to know how much time it takes a horse to run that far? I think there are too many sprint races nowadays. Why don't the tracks havp marathon races as far as five or six miles? Im sure the public would enjoy them more than the short furlong races. Donna Wood, Long Beach. I dont know of any rule that limits how far a thoroughbred is allowed to run but four miles is the longest distance I can find any record of. The world record for that distance is seven minutes and 10 45 seconds set by Sotemia at Churchill Downs on Oct.

7, 1912. The main reason there arent more marathon races is that it takes much more conditioning to get a horse up to running distances of a mile and one-half or more than it does for a sprint race. Personally I enjoy distance races as well as sprints. I do believe that races could be graduated up to two miles with an occasional two and one-half mile event as a championship test for stakes-class marathoners. Now that Las Vegas has had its opening do you 1111 think it has any chance to be successful? The reason Im asking is that I have a chance to buy a quarter horse very reasonable and dont want to take it to Las Vegas if they are going to fold up like the track that ran there a while back.

The firm I work for is transferring me to Nevada and I thought having a race horse might keep me away from the gambling tables. J. S. Pomona Im not a prophet but after spending a weekend at Las Vegas and seeing the new Th underbird Downs race track in person, I dont see any reason why this particular venture shouldn't be successful. Joe Wells, president of the Thunder-bird Hotel and of the new race track, is a solid citizen of Las Vegas.

If the first two weekends of racing are any indication you can look for its popularity to grow. The opening weekend bucking the final two World Series games) saw the total attendance in excess of 7500 while this last weekend crowds of better than 4000 turned out each clay with the daily handle easily going over the $70,000 needed to break even. The Big Six multiple wagering feature (it works exactly like Calientes 5-10) has already taken a hold and it figures to increase in popularity with each weekend of racing. I wouldnt want to advise you on whether to buy a race horse or not but do suggest you write or phone Richard Thompson, racing secretary and director of racing at the Thunderbird Downs, and find out if this particular horse will fit in with the current racing at the Las Vegas track. COLORS la Can you tell me why one horse can win a race easily in fast time and then come Imck several days later and be well beaten in slower time? This has always perplexed me. If we cant handicap horses by time how can you figure who the fastest horses are in a race? Margaret Schilling, Santa Ana. There is no absolute way of knowing ahead of time the fastest horse in a race. One big fallacy among horse players is in figuring that one horse is faster than another just because he had run a faster race. Im not trying to confuse you but in my own method of handicapping I do not give too much credit to running time.

The main information running time gives is that it does prove a tioCse can' runfar. "How the race is run (whether the pace is swift'or not) actually determines the final outcome of a race more than any other factor. In other words if Swaps had set an easy slow pace in a race, no matter how fast he ran the last half or quarter-mile the final time would be slow. Also if a horse wins handily or easily (with speed in reserve) there is no telling how much faster he may have been able to go. For that reason his final running time would not be a true gauge of his potential speed.

How a horse is rated, when the jockey makes his move or track conditions are also strong factors in how fast a race is run. The next time you see a supposedly slower horse win from a faster one (probably heavily favored because of faster running times) don't be too surprised. Just figure that the winner had more inherent class and speed han the one you mistakenly believed was faster because of runnin" times.
