Man rice Terraine Interview With Washington Let Be Merry, Tot ThU Mj Son Wu Dead and Is Alive Again; Was Lost and Is Found." In St Nicholas Sara King Wiley has a romance of the American Revolution entitled 'Maurice and His Father." A brave little English lad is separated from his father and falls into the hands of the Americans. His father afterward embraces the patriot cause, and his son is restored to him through the medium of Washington, as shown injhe following extract: Maurice was informed that General Washington was there showing the works to General Lafayette, and his heart began to flutter and thump within him. Barney sitting beside him, looking at his master with bright and loving eyes, his little black nose quivering. "Barney," said the boy, "we're afraid, but wfi're not going to stop if we are." And, picking up the dog, he took his way through the rustling leaves that lay like heaps cf gold toward the house which one of the soldiers, from whom Maurice ventured to ask for directions, had pointed out to him.

"Yes, General Washington is there and alone," he was told. Could he see him? "Sure, no, ye little bye," Eaid the Irish sentry. "It's wore out the poor gintleman is, already, and it's mesilf wouldn't bother with all thim jabbering Frinchmen Maurice was desperate. "Oh, please he said. "Beg, Barney; yon beg too.

The little dog sat up at once, with drooping paws. "Sure, mo own name's Barney. And is your dog's name O'Reilly, too?" said the sentry. "Oh, if he is ycur namesake, exclaimed Mianice, "you must let him in! Oh, see, you caii hold him while I go in!" Miiurico thought no one could resist such an offer. "I'll eee, said the soldier, and he stepped within, and, returning, said, "Goon." Maurice yielded up Barney and stepped into the hall, went along it and paused just inside an open door.

He was trembling. A voice said, "What is your errand?" a voice even, grave and rather severe. Maurice raised his eyes. Just before the fireplace stood the great oommander. To the boy 's excited thought he seemed even larger than he was.

Washington's hands were behind his back, his haud-tms bcA fees a Uttfee twrntenX. 'W2rat Is your errand, my lad?" said he again, with a note of command in the tone. "Oh, my father, my father!" he said. "I have been lost from him so very long!" Something in tho thrilling child's voice, something in the piteous and forlorn expression cf his face, went straight to the warm' heart that the general carried bencr.th liia calm exterior. He crowed the room in quick strides, and, laying his hand on the boy's shoulder, said kindly "My peer chil This was too much.

Maurice stood still in tho center of the room and pressed his hands hard together. The general went out and up stairs. It seemed to Maurice that he stepped very slowly.

CHAD FIELD REGULATOR ATLANTA, GA. SOLD BY ALL DRUGGISTS. nTV cnv liof tro fmirrhf. nrrainsf j-v wj vuu 0 the world, the flesh and the devil in this campaign is to utter a platitude, but we Bryan in ia suit. Wadesboro Messenger.

Negroes are good servants, but all history testifies, since the days of Ham, that they are utterly unfit to be rulers. They would not aspire to be rulers but for wicked men that use them for their cwn selfish purposes. If there were not some bad men in the Republican party in North Carolina, the negroes would be "innocuous" for harm. 'We could name several good negroes that would make a safer and better Governor of Nortn Carolina than Dan. Russell.

Let decoy Democrats, wolves in lamb's vool, go over to the enemy that they have served behind masked batteries, and all true Democrats will bless the day that made of our nominal friends open and avowed enemies. Be a "pier or a puppy" is a homely aphorism. A skulking and deceitful friend is a worse foe than an open enemy in armor with shield and banner. In the future history of the Palmer an Buckner will be associated with Benedict Arnold. J.

Bryan has been offered 000 per annum to act as attorney for a large dry goods house in New York. On the next day he had an offer of $50,000 per annum, by a lecture bureau. He reserved them for future consideration. We object. We want him to be engaged for a campaign of education for the race at the close of the century.

The Bilver clubs want him as their great and gallant leader, and so far as pay is considered, the silver clubs of the people can renumerste him for his labor, and he will be in the work in which he has made a name for hon or, discretion, ability and eloquence that is without paralell in our annals. i Utah i a much-married State, and altho the institution5 in Utah is now abridged, restricted and illegalized, there yet exists some practical recognition of the old matrimonial days In Utah woman is entitled to every civil right under the State constitution. They can hold any office in tht home of the brave and gallant from a dog-whipper to a State Sena- ator and Governor of the State. In the late silver campaign, Mrs. Agnes M.

Cannon was a silver candidate for the State Senate and Elder Cannon, the Mormon husband of Mrs, Agnes was tne gold Dug candidate 11 111 "I'li They both' stumped the District and when the votes were counted, lo! and behold! Mrs. Cannon was on top. Hurray for the filly. Defeated buc not subdued. The patriotism of our people is erect.

Four months ago the Democratic party was in the throes of dissolu tion. Its best mends feared that the time of its departure was at hand. But a good Providence over ruled events, gave us a brave and gallant leader, and Democracy reared its head, took new hope and made a fight that gave us assurance that Almighty God who rules the destiny of nations, was with us and in his good and appointed time would come to the rescue of our people. So help us God I Frien ds whom the people had honored deserted the face of the enemy, stacked their arms when the fight was just begun, turned their coats, and joined the ranks of their life long foes. We believe that never before in the history of the State of North Carolina have there been so many necrroes to office.

In ad dition to some elections of that sort in the Albemarle District, we see several in other parts of the State. They seem to be assigned the place Justice of the Peace, which is f.n office of rust and responsibility in our poor old State. A quarter of a century hence we will have a negro Governor in North Carolina, if the Republicans fuse with them as in the late election. They hold the balance of power between the par ties and they can dictate the can didates. If history makes any, record it is that the negro race is eith er tne wunng aupes oi worse wmte men that they are incapable of self-government.

Governor William A. of North Carolina, was a painstaking, conservative, cool and cautious man. His Honor Judge Graham, of the circuit bench, son of the Governor, seems to be a sport from the parent stock, of a different type. At the recent Superior Court of Wilson county, Judge Graham presiding, Neverson Williams was tried for selling liquor to minors. The Judge in charging the jury, told them that if they believed the witnesses "he is guilty.

Retire and make up your verdict." The jury retired, and on their return announced a verdict of "not guilty," whereupon the judge discharged them for the term saying: "you are utterly incompetent to sit on a jury, and sheriff, summon me a jury of men of good moral character." Sheriff Cowell replied, "I don't know that I could find a better jury." Mr. John E. Woodard said "It is as good a jury as we can get in the county." We thought that Jurys' duties were defined as well as Judges' and we thought moroever, that Jurors were Judges of the facts, in the Jury room. talk with the best truckers in your s( ctiou ask them what they know about Tait's Extra Early Nonpareil Pea, and then send for From Catarrh The sufferer from catarrh, perhaps, meets with more discourag-ement in seeking- a ctxre than those afflicted with all other ailments. After exhausting the skill of the best physicians, and inhaling various mixtures, paying out large sums for doctors' fees and medicines, he finds himself either as bad off as at first or a great deal worse.

The cause of this is easily explained. The disease is in the blood, and only a real blood remedy can possibly have any effect upon it. The doctors being-unable, with their stereotyped remedies of potash and mercury, to cure diseases of the blood, direct their efforts toward treating the symptoms of the disease, and ignoring its cause. The inhaling of various sprays, and use of washes, is but a superficial and temporary treatment, and cannot possibly effect a cure. Mrs.

Josephine Polhill. Mrs. Josephine Polhill, of Due West, S. was for years a sufferer from this distressing complaint, and has learned by experience its tortures. She says: "For years I was the victim of the worst case of catarrh that I ever heard of.

"The trouble became so deep-seated that I was entirely deaf in one ear, It is difficult to describe my condition, but some idea of the ravages of the disease can be obtained when I state that all the inside of my nose, includ' ing part of the bone sloughed off. It can be readily understood how offen sive all this was, and how unbearable my condition became. "When the disease had gone this far the physi cian gave me up as incurable, and told me I would never be any better. "Reading of many similar cases being cured by S.
