8C Lively Arts The Miami Herald Tuesday Dec 13 1983 VIDEO PEEP SHOW 25 Open 24 Mrs 25 137 NE 79th Street 757-8292 A likable Movie Review Lonely Hearts (R) By BILL COSFORD Herald Movie Critic Lonely Hearts is a sweetly unassuming little movie about a couple of late-bloomers and how they fall in love botch things up and maybe patch things together again an innocence about its characters that betrays its origins the film is Australian and hard to picture Hollywood making it quite this way but the warmth generated by the two central performances is quite universal Peter is a bachelor about to turn 50 His mother has died as the film opens and it seems clear that he has been living in her shadow for some time his father is a patient at a nursing home Peter teaches music and tunes pianos and his two most interesting possessions are a disorderly too-fragrant dachshund and an ill-fitting toupee He does not seem an imposing candidate for romance Patricia who looks to be in her 30s and has a well-hidden beauty her timidity is like a mask has a flat of her own but she also has two domineering parents who treat her as if she were a teenager From Action Line solves problems cuts red tape and stands up for your rights Daily in The Herald Barqain Mat Shows belore 6PM $2 00 Except Sudden Impact Scarface SCARFACE (R) 1 25 4 SO 8 25 SUDDEN IMPACT (R) 100 3:10 5 25 7:40 9 55 NEVER SAY Art Towne Excellent Very Good Good lj Worth Seeing Fair Poor Zero Worthless brief scenes of Patricia with a counselor we learn that she is still a virgin and terrified both of that circumstance and of the prospect of changing it Peter and Patricia have invested in a club which is how Peter comes to spend $100 for the right phone number Introduction of the characters to audience not exactly at the top of the craft should be able to do better than this Hopkins has the role of the sheriff whose teenage son and daughter are not only at some risk but persist in following him around until he is forced to scold you mind if I do the he asks sounding a bit like an ethnically transmogrified Charlie Chan As the location is the American southwest the filmmakers are able to add a wholly gratuitious subplot dealing with anti-Indian prejudice a clumsy and rather cynical attempt to throw the audience off the trail to the real culprit Billed as "A Jim Sotos Film" Sweet Sixteen does not give us any more meaningful clue as to the accomplishments of its director Nor unhappily does it suggest any notable ones to come back Miami Festival officials also announced that Pavilion Hotel will serve as the hotel" of the Miami Film Festival and will provide rooms for festival guests The Miami Film Festival is sched 'MHWVMfltmi oro Wl ms it A jfp -V and to one another is accomplished in the first few minutes The balance of Lonely Hearts is given to the growth of a relationship and the growth of each character within it For comic relief there is nosy sister and the rather broadly drawn figure of a director at the local community theater where Peter and Patricia wind up playing in a Strindberg revival For human touches there are the painful conversational waltzes of the two as they seek some common ground and increasing wariness in the face of her acknowledgement of desire for an intimate relationship Wendy Hughes and Norman Kaye are naturals in the central roles: Each is deft at bringing his character to life in tempo with the developing love affair and each is wonderfully convincing when the thing comes apart Paul Cox the director keeps his focus narrow and his story unforced some of his scenes have an apparently spontaneous whimsy reminiscent of the work of Scottish director Bill Forsyth (Local Hero Gregory's Girl) a lovely film and even its characters' flaws are likable so sweet By BILL COSFORD Herald Movie Critic Sweet Sixteen more evidence that the slasher boom is playing itself out is actually about a 15-year-old girl and how all the boys who take an interest in her taste cold steel for their pains Near the end of the movie sweet Melissa turns 16 and though the small Texas town where she lives is now awash with young blood the local sheriff OKs a sweet-16 gala: think that a party is just what ths town needs right Of course the affair turns into a bloodbath before the killer is unmasked and though the identity is a surprise an anticlimax nonetheless Sweet Sixteen is remarkable only for its cast which includes Patrick MacNee Susan Strasberg and Bo Hopkins all actors who though Hotel airline The Miami Film Festival has secured the sponsorship of an area hotel
