Audrey Totter is seeing a lot of former flame Charlie Grayson while we are in the spring romancing department immraT-nf i THE STORY OF A BIS SHOT Merer Wi CRAWFORD' DSD--SRAM) BcCAMBSfflGE ALSO FROM COT OR CARTOON AND NFWR WMMM bears a marked resemblance to Nijinsky and critics have said he is the onlv dancer who has ever equalled Nijinsky's famous ballet elevations Mme Nijinsky was here in Hollywood some years ago after she wrote the biography trying to sell it for a movie What a devoted wife 6he always was For 31 years Nijinsky was in an asylum mentally ill and she never failed him IT often that my friend Sam Goldwyn admits he is wrong But the friends who told him that of was too grim and bitter and that parts of it should be remade have won out Sam has ordered a sweetheart written in for Farley and the girl he has signed is Mala Powers Funny thing about Mala: When she played just a bit part in "Our Very Own" Sam was impresssed with her and he thought she would be just right for the sunshine element as girl friend But ShvdA Jcdtuj Showing In Greater Miami! TILM star Edward Arnold who plays radio Presidents of the United States every Sunday afternoon eays going to throw his real-life chapeau into the United States Senatorial ring out In California Louis Mayer Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer president reached Miami Beach yet because he had a date to accept an Americanism award at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York Wednesday night Morton Gould is doing the music for that forthcoming musical version of Eugene Under the which will NOT be a musical comedy And on the subject of Broadway plays and economy is it a sign of the devaluating times that is on Broadway as Wisteria probably -want to see on the Eiffel currently at the Florida and Colony theaters twice Once for the fine performances and the absorbing murder plot of which it can boast a second time to enjoy its travelogue backgrounds of Paris in color! Performance is the thing in this highly melodramatic but always absorbing story of a maniac depressive killer Franchot Tone and his insanely clever cat-and-mouse matching of wits with detective Charles Langhton Burgess Meredith is also seen to good effect in the role of a half-witted tool in mad plot but it is in his other stmt directing the film in which he scores the heaviest Meredith has turned his camera on every tourist trap in the French capital as well as to those more somber sides of Paris which the visitor does not usually see It is not quite sporting to tell prospective movie goers too much of murder mystery plots so simply set the scene by telling you that playboy Bob rich relative is murdered and that Meredith is jailed for the crime but allowed to escape by Laughton in the belief that the half-wit will fill in the vacant spaces in the real death warrant Before Laughton traps his man 3 ou will have seen practically all of Pans including the George Eiffel Tower the Seine with lovers strolling its banks and other city and suburban landmarks All of which gives the proceedings a deep mark of authenticity This film Is recommended especially for those movie-goers who have tired of seeing unconvincing backgrounds in films purporting to show overseas locales New stage bill at the Olympia has the peculiar quality of creeping up on you with a pleasant warmth just when you are about to conclude that it is slightly below par of some recent bills The first feeling may be due to the scheduling of the various or the fact that movie actor Frank Faylen co-starred on the bill wdth Bonnie Baker is called upon to emcee the show Not that Frankie do a genial and good job of it but it does serve to bring an anti-elimatic letdown to his eventual appearance In his own slot However convinced that the bill will be a stronger one when including his music arrives and he is able to do his full act in his own spot Miss Baker the Johnny Oh girl scintillates brightly with a medly of "old which culminates in the aforementioned and then introduces a couple of newer numbers which fit her pert t-zone like a glove Surprise of the bill is Dave Barry who has always been a funny fellow but who has now acquired a poise and a confidence which puts him right up in the top brackets of comedy-making We wonder where Dave was hiding when the local cafes were looking for to throw into the breech when the big names of other years were lading eggs here this past season Filling out the bill are the opening toe tapsetry of The Crawfords and the novelty acro-musical act of the Nathan Brothers who assume impossible postures that we have never seen before out of a Rube Goldberg cartoon Young Dick Kallman who is doing those big-time vocals at the Saxony hotel Shellimar Room is a former Miami Beach high school student His dad Alvin Kallman operates the Balsams at Dixville Notch Frank Carroll and Johnny Gorman are still at Ft Radio Club with their unique harmonies Ed Weiner author of the Runyon has been named president of the new Publicists Guild in New York Joseph Sharkey (could be New next Mayor) and Sid Watters two Gotham politicos will be good advertisements for Florida sunshine by the time they wind up their family stay at the Sherry Frontenac when he rt ent to sign her he found that meantime Mala had become a star in Ida She is now under contract to Howard Hughes and so Mr had to borrow his former bit player! GUESS WHO is going to be a modern showboat captain just like In the good old days of the Mississippi river boats no one else but Tom Brown who with a small group of backers has bought a 220 foot paddle bottom boat and going to give shows on it up and down the Sacramento river suh This does not mean that Tom is giving up pictures He will commute between Sacramento and Hollywood putting on boat shows between movies and radio jobs OPEN II AM A VARIETY dSlt11 First -MS 'VI 4 A -A I yM "01 kP FARLEY GRAUGER ttm raiiELL MIG-Pil Kilt 468Wnd tty wV WHAT Do '4 (poZT THb Picture JA With All Tha Hilarious Answers DOROTHY McGUIRE WILLIAM LUIIDIGAU --JUNE HAVOC Directed by I CLAUDE BINYON J9 MM catUu Al'UltbCA MAM ArtmT TO MIAMI HCtAW vounb BABY HAlt THREE' BIG- WEEK PllS ini ipili CGAAL WAY i 1 Open 6:45 (AilWtM I WlhtNMM 01 REGOKFI Dean Jagger TLtLSR WGU La it Day!
