preempted Jhe popular daytime shows and went live for much of President Earley Television and small size of the staff undermine the product Sanchez who was live at the restaurant made several mistakes including announcing that Nancy Reagan was leaving the car with her husband The First Lady did not make the trip The visit wasn't the 6nly big-news effort by local stations this week The the four-week period when the size of South Florida audiences is measured continues a look at some of the special series: Hair Today Gone Tomorrow This Ch 7 five-parter focused on balding It a weighty subject sort speeches but the station had also brought in its Washington corr- Ronald Reagan's visit to Little Havana Friday only to come up with egg on their faces for the trouble Not one 6f South Florida's three major stations was prepared to translate an eight-minute speech delivered in Spanish prior to the address at Dade County Auditorium jThey should have been They knew well in advance that the event was the health-club craze airing on the 5:30 pm newscast turned into the most lively piece of TV journalism so far this month Sure hard to miss with exercising bodies in brightly colored leotards and tights straining to throbbing music Yet the shots and the editing were intriguing without being titillating Turner larded the series with practical information such as the questions to ask before signing a health-club contract The only fault here was that much of the information was said and gone before we could grasp it Cheap Thrills Summer Vacation Welcome back Morry been away too long South premiere feature reporter Morry Alter really been away physically (except to research this series) just that his recent Ch 10 series on folks who work with kids in February for example haven't had the pizazz come to expect The fizz was back with this five-parter that showed inexpensive vacation sights from Georgia Je-kyll Island and Savannah to Washington the National Cathedral and the Smithsonian Institution We would sign up for the tour Diana Photographer Will Harbeson provided one of the best bits of videotape when he stood at the top of an escalator as people rode up A bald head appeared rising on the horizon like a sun The series was even better because Frankel was not too subjective Many TV reporters would have focused the piece on themselves trying out the treatments and attempting to be funny about them Frankel showed some pictures of himself with hair and he did smear on some lotions but his apppearance was just enough to humanize not monopolize Frankel is astute if not gave Ch 6 the impetus to get this comprehensive and logical series into its 10 pm newscast Ch 6 has the smallest news staff of South major stations and this was its only special series of the period was worth the extra effort Fisher and photographer Bill Glass seemed to be everywhere at once Palm Beach Broward County Kendall for a geographic spread that was especially pleasing since other
