I Beatrice Freeman' (Miss Wyatt) and her husband Frank (Brian), after seven years of a childless marriage, eagerly await the arrival of Lily (Terry Burnham), eight-year-old orphan girl who will become their daughter by adoption. Beatrice has long planned for her role of mother with extensive study of child behavior and has equipped her new daughters room with carefully chosen toys designed to stimulate learning, nurture affection and assure security. Lily arrives to find the first evening in her new home a round of planned activities, with a visit from two outspoken neighbor children as part of Beatrices social plan to relieve initial tension. Beatrice is shocked when the children leave bearing most of Lilys toys, gifts from her new daughter who shunned them as not her own. At bedtime, the girl is quietly diffident to Beatrices motherly attentions and studied expressions of affection.

Prepared to tuck Lily in bed, Beatrice is surprised to discov-er the girl wearing her shoes and it brings a heated explanation that she is planning an early return to the. orphanage. Neither East or West can afford to double and South goes down one trick for a loss of 50 points. At the other table, East decided that his hand called for a rebid. He did not like the idea of raising hearts with three small and went to one no-trump. Wests best bid would have been three diamonds and if he had made that bid the chances are that East would have passed and come out smiling, but West was in a bidding mood and jumped right to three no-trump. The choice was unfortunate.

South opened a spade and when the smoke of battle had cleared away East had lost four spades, two hearts and one club for minus 150 and a net loss to his team of 200 points, since his partners had gone minus 50 at the other table.
