About twelve years ago he abandoned rail roading and settled on a farm near Dennis, where be resided until a couple of years ago, when his mind gave way and he was removed to a private hos pital in Kansas City.

Labette County Needs a Poor farm. County Commissioner Talbot, speak' ing of county affairs the other day, said that the county was sadly in need of better facilities for the care of the dependent poor of the county. The present shack that passes for a poor farm, he said, was a disgrace to the county and that with a new house and the right kind of an overseer the county could annually save hundreds of dollars in the care of its legitimate poor. A recent visit to the farm found the house in a bad state of decay, with great holes in the roof and the build' ing full of vermin, so much so that many inmates spend most of their time out of the house. Such a state of affairs is not creditable to the peo ple of this county, and Commissioner Talbot proposes at the next meeting of the board to see if something can' not be done to improve matters at the farm.

He believes that with the right kind of management, the poor farm can be made almost self sustaining, instead of a burden upon the county. The Theatre. Al. W. Martin's big dramatic and scenic production of "Uncle Tom's Cab in comes to the opera house to-mor row night.

Such action, it is claimed by those in a posi tion to know, would save the taxpay ers hundreds of dollars every year. A Car of Hay Wrecked.
