Maryland's 18th-ranked Terps captured their second straight ACC football title Saturday by overpowering Virginia's Cavaliers 45-34 in a battle of bowl-bound teams Maryland coach Bobby Ross said "I am pleased to win without an asterisk There is no asterisk on this one" Ross was referring to the fact that the Terps' title last year was tarnished by a loss to Clemson which was ineligible for the conference championship This year the Terps finished 5-0 in the ACC and also defeated Clemson 41-23 a week ago "Rick Badanjek was fantastic Our ground game has really picked up since the second half at Miami" said Ross Two weeks ago the Terps staged major college's biggest comeback by overcoming a 31-0 halftime deficit to nip Miami 42-40 Badanjek ran 17 times for 217 yards and two touchdowns and set up a third Maryland score with a long run to the Virginia 11 early in the second half The Terps 8-3 with six straight victories officially accepted a bid to play Tennessee in the Sun Bowl on Dec 22 at El Paso Tex Virginia (3-1-2 7-2-2) accepted a bid to play Purdue on Dec 31 in the Peach Bowl in Atlanta "The team deserves all the accolades you can give them" said Virginia coach George Welsh "I'm looking forward to taking this team to a bowl game This game takes a little of the luster off I don't feel real good right now" Welsh said "it was the kind of game I just abhor a shootout We just couldn't stop them Nobody stopped them since Penn State at the end of that game (Maryland's last loss by 25-24) so I guess you'd have to say it was more their execution and our lack of defense" Ross paid tribute to Virginia saying "They did a good job of attacking our defense Not to take anything away from Virginia but we did not play as well defensively as we can We did not have a good week's practice on defense and it carried over Offensively I could not be more pleased and proud" The two teams combined for more than 1000 yards in total offense before a crowd of 43017 the third largest in Virginia's history but it was Badanjek who put on the big show The 223-pound junior fullback scored once on a 65-yard run set up another score with a 72-yard ramble and added a 1-yard scoring run as he broke Maryland's scoring record for one season with 102 points and career touchdown record with 34 Maryland up 24-14 at the half broke the game open by driving 79 yards in nine plays to open the second half Badanjek got his second touchdown after carrying five times for 24 yards in the march After that the Terps simply held off Virginia's comeback efforts by striking quickly after each
