corner the license number of the channel 68 transmitter which is located atop the First Union Plaza The FCC requires that the license number be displayed since the station has no call letters Premiere bowed on March 1 with an ambitious plan to offer pay-per-view films to subscribers in the Charlotte area Customers bought or rented a decoder machine that allowed them access to first-run films not available on cable TV services But after losing an estimated $1 million Premiere went out of business George Stein president and chief executive officer of Premiere said when the business folded that he hoped to make up some of the losses by selling the station Neither side would reveal the price tag on channel 68 FCC approval of a license transfer can take anywhere from a couple of months to a year Channel 68 once the home of the Premiere pay-per-view movie service is now airing religious programming while a California broadcaster tries to secure a license Trinity Broadcasting Network (TBN) headquartered in Santa Ana Calif filed a petition on June 21 with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for a license to operate channel 68 The license is held by the Satellite Entertainment Network which operated the Premiere service for less than a month before it went out of business in March But while Premiere sent a scrambled signal through the air that only customers with special decoders could enjoy TBN has already begun airing a slate of religious and inspirational programs that can be received by anyone with a UHF antenna A spokeswoman for Paul Crouch the president of TBN said Trinity has reached programming with the Satellite Entertainment Network to carry shows while the license application wends its way through the FCC Other than that she said Trinity and Crouch had no comment TBN operates UHF channel 40 in Santa Ana and beams that signal off a satellite to about 400 cable television systems TBN also offers its programs to other broadcast television stations Unlike the Christian Broadcasting Network of Virginia Beach Va which mixes its religious messages with old movies and syndicated reruns TBN offers nothing but religious programming Crouch hosts one of
