touchdowns including the game-winner with 5:07 remaining as the Virginia Cavaliers posted a 26-23 college football victory over Virginia Tech's Hokies Saturday Majkowski who relieved ineffective starter Kevin Ferguson late in the second quarter hit Ford with a 14-yard scoring strike on fourth down for the final score of the game The pair also connected for a 18-yard touchdown pass with a minute left in the first half to give the Cavaliers (3-1) a 10-3 lead Virginia's Kenny Stadlin who kicked a 19-yard field goal early in the second quarter booted a 56- yarder seconds before the half to put the Cavaliers up 13-6 Stadlin's boot was school record for Virginia and the longest field goal ever in Tech's Lane Stadium Virginia Tech (2-2) came back In the third quarter when strong safety didn't like the way his team let Clemson come back but added "1 think it's clear we're a little different than we've been in the past" Clemson coach Danny Ford whose team was ranked No 2 in the nation two weeks ago said he did a poor job of getting his team mentally ready which accounted for the first-half difficulties He said turnovers which were vital in the Georgia loss were key factors again to make it 6-0 Georgia Tech's first touch down came midway in the second quarter when Glanton capped an 80-yard drive with a 1-yard run Dewberry whose 49-yard pass to Gary Wilkins highlighted the touchdown drive then passed to Glanton for the two-point conversion to make it 14-0 After intercepting Eppley's pass Georgia Tech went 51 yards in nine plays to score again Dewberry completing four passes in the drive including a 1-yarder to Wilkins for the score Clemson appeared to have stopped that drive when Glanton fumbled at the Clemson goal and the Tigers recovered but the play was nullified by a penalty against Clemson The Tigers were penalized because one of their players for whom a substitute had come in ran off the field by way of the backline of the end zone which is a violation rather than across the sideline He was trying to get out before Tech which was running a no-huddle play could get off the snap Clemson shut down Dewberry's passing in the second half (two for 10) and controlled Tech's running game and the Tigers' offense came alive Eppley passed 25 yards to Richard Butler to cut the edge to 21-7 early in the third period A 78-yard drive sparked by Eppley's passing and Driver's running and capped by Steve Griffin's 20-yard rambling touchdown run made it 21-14 seconds into the fourth period Driver hacked out most of Continued From Page 1C Tiger Stacey Driver who had an otherwise outstanding day with 131 yards rushing fumbled the ball away at Georgia Tech's 4 Another ended with a pass interception quarterback Mike Eppley's fourth throwaway in two games (he had a fifth on a desperation throw at the end of the game) and the other subsided with a punt Georgia Tech meanwhile had little trouble with the No 1 pass defense in the country (90 yards per game) John Dewberry passing for 165 yards The Yellow Jackets were also mauling Clemson's defense on the ground with the heralded Layette widely regarded as one of the top runners in the country and the fullbacks mixing it up "1 think we stopped Layette (69 yards in 23 carries) pretty well" said Clemson defensive line coach Tom Harper "but the fullbacks hurt us" Georgia Tech coach Bill Curry said "Obviously Clemson decided that Robert Layette was not going to beat them today and that's exactly what 1 would have done And so the fullbacks did well" On the first play of the game fullback Keith Blanton burst over the middle for 41 yards to the Clemson 43 The Yellow Jackets bulled to the 7 and settled for a David Bell field goal After Driver's fumble killed a long Clemson drive Eddie Colson plunges for yardage for Tar Heels against Kansas 4 Heels recovered an onside kick did little to dampen Crum's feeling about the defensive improvement "1 thought our defense played particularly well in the second half (despite the Jayhawks' rally)" said Crum "We needed what happened in the second half "Today we moved better on defense and created losses of yardage and turnovers that led to scores for us" The Tar Heels ran for only 159 yards but Anthony passed for 180 completing 15 of 26 His only interception bounced off receiver Earl Winfield three times before being picked off Backup quarterback Mark Maye of Charlotte missed his second straight game He has had a sore shoulder that is almost healed but Crum said he held Maye out because of the cool damp weather "We could simpler assignments They also went with six defensive backs often to try to contain Kansas's passing It worked for most of the game against a Jayhawks offense that was ranked 19th in the nation with 419 yards per game McEachern had two of his sacks in the first quarter to help throttle Kansas And Jayhawks' coach Mike Gottfried said that after North Carolina drove to a 7- 0 lead on their third possession late in the first quarter "We played conservatively and that takes you out of some things you like to do We didn't make it a passing game until we were down 20-0" North Carolina quarterback Kevin Anthony performed almost flawlessly all day He drove the team to its first touchdown late in the first quarter rolling around right end the final 6 yards on a naked reverse Lee Gliarmis kicked a gave it four straight scoring possessions and the 23-0 lead with less than five minutes gone in the third quarter The late bid by Kansas (1-3) they scored with nine seconds left but the Tar 4 1
