to a By GLENN ROLLINS $taff Write North Carolina at Clemson sue Memorial Stadium Clemson Time: 1 pm a The Teams: North Carolina's Tar Heels (1- 2) won their first game of the season last week beating Kansas 23-17 after opening with losses to Navy (33-30) and Boston College (52-20) The Clemson Tigers (2-2) dropped their second straight game to Georgia Tech (28-21) following a defeat to Georgia (26-23) the week before It is the first time the Tigers have lost Iwo straight since 1980 and the first time since then they have failed to beat everyone on their schedule except Georgia or Boston College The loss also broke Ciemson's 20-game winning streak against ACC teams The Game: There probably isn't much wrong with the Tigers that a little sure-handedness won't cure They have made 16 turnovers this season 12 the past two weeks and grabbed 13 Clemson made only 24 turnovers last season to opponents 38 The Tigers have outgained all foes but Georgia Tech and have a much wider yards-per-game average over opponents (401-286) than last year (384-367) when their record was 9-1-1 Clemson still has a powerful ground game led by tailbacks Stacey Driver (51 yards per carry) and Terrence Flap! (80) Quarterback Mike Eppley from Charlotte always is sharp against North Carolina and the Tar Heels have been especially vulnerable to passing this season North Carolina has had trouble mounting drives against Clemson and also with making big offensive plays That could continue with a young offensive line The Tar Heels have been adequate against rushing (39 yards per attempt) but have been ravaged in the air have completed 60 of their passes for 261 yards per game Kansas State at South Carolina sue Williams-Brice Stadium Columbia 111 Time: 1:30 pnt II The Teems: The Kansas State Wildcats (1- 3) have beaten Tennessee Tech 28-12 and lost to Vanderbilt 26-14 Texas Christian 42-10 and Oklahoma 24-6 The South Carolina Gamecocks 3-0 have won their first three for the first time since 1977 beating The Citadel 31-24 Duke 21-0 and Georgia 17-10 Kansas State of the Big Eight has been outgained 384-259 yards per game but is dangerous offensively if senior quarterback Stan Weber is at full strength He missed last week's loss to Oklahoma but is dangerous on the option having ashed for 57 yards per carry (218 total) the team's only average above 37 In the first three games Weber completed 33 of 83 passes (524) for 334 yards two touchdowns and three interceptions South Carolina's defense has not allowed a touchdown on the ground and is giving up only 97 yards rushing per game and 173 passing The Game: The Gamecocks should be too powerful for the Wildcats on both sides of the ball South Carolina is passing for 211 yards per game and rushing for 191 with the ground attack led by four quality runners Quinton Lewis averages 70 yards per game and 68 per carry with Kent Hagood at 74 per carry and Rayriard Brown at 44 Thomas Dendy (27) the leading rusher the past two seasons who has been slowed by injury in 1984 is slated to start with Lewis Expect Kansas State to have to pass because its current history doesn't suggest success against South Carolina's ground defense probably the team's strongest area South Carolina defensive tackle Roy Hart is Out for the season with a knee injury suffered against Georgia NC State at Georgia Tech 2 snit Grant Field Atlanta Time: 12:15 pm The Teams: The ACC television game of the week matches the Associated Press' 18thranked team the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (0-0 ACC 3-0 overall) against the struggling NC State Wolipack (0-1 2-2) Georgia Tech has beaten Alabama 16-6 The Citadel 48-3 and Clemson 28-21 last week) NC State has beaten Ohio 43-6 and East Carolina 31-22 and lost to Furman 34-30 and Wake Forest 24-15 The Yellow Jackets are ranked for the first time since 1978 The Game Both teams have outstanding running backs but Georgia Tech should have the edge at quarterback and on defense Both teams average 48 yards per rush but Tech yields 31 and NC State 43 The Wolipack's tailbacks have been outstanding even with senior Joe McIntosh (81 yards per carry) sidelined with a hamstring pull (he Is questionable for today) Vince Evans ran for 201 yards against East Carolina last week and is averaging 92 per game and 54 per carry Joe Greene averages 74 and 83 Georgia Tech tailback Robert Layette averages 118 per game and 53 per carry and fullback Keith Glanton (59 49) also is dangerous Virginia at Duke on: Wallace Wade Stadium Durham Time: 7 pm The Teems: The Virginia Cavaliers (0-0 ACC 3-1 overall) are on a three-game winning streak after their opening 55-0 loss to Clemson which didn't count in the ACC standings because of the Tigers' probation They have beaten Virginia Military 35-7 and won road games over Navy 21-9 and Virginia Tech 28-23 The Duke Blue Devils (0-0 1-2) have lost two games since opening with a 31-24 victory over Indiana losing on the road to South Carolina 21-0 and Army 13-9 The Blue Devils have been stripped of most of their proven skill players by injury and that probably cost them the Army game when they got the ball into scoring position but couldn't produce a touchdown Virginia playing its third straight road game hasn't won three games away from home in the same season since 1968 The Game Virginia has been enigmatic winning three of four but giving up more yardage than it has gained 354-333 on the average The Cavaliers also have completed 543 of their passes but with nine interceptions They got a spark last week in their victory over Virginia Tech when senior Don Majkowski came off the bench for starter Kevin Ferguson and in seven possessions produced three touchdowns and a field goal The ground game (161 yards per game) hasn't been as potent as last year's 217 but the passing has been about the same Dukes defense has improved from last year's yield of 31 points and 435 yards per game to 19 and 352 but it hasn't faced the better offenses on its schedule The offensive production might be ready to climb with quarterback Ron Salty returning from injury last week to pass for 143 Catamount Attack Offers Mixed Ba Jeff Gilbert What's it going to be today for Western Carolina against Appalachian State pass or run? Three weeks ago the Catamounts were zipping along much as they have in most of coach Bob Waters's 15 seasons throwing 57 times against Tennessee-Chattanooga But when they lost the game 10-6 Waters decided the thing for his team to do to straighten itself out was to establish the running game The next opponent Virginia Military was a good proving ground and the Catamounts ran 55 times in a 22-16 victory as tailback Eddie Maddox gained 195 yards Last week they did both in a 34-6 victory over Tennessee Tech Quarterback Jeff Gilbert had his best game of the season hitting 18 of 29 passes for 236 yards and Maddox ran for 110 more yards What can Appalachian expect today? Waters said only "We've finally got our whole offense clicking together" When unbeaten South Carolina plays Kansas State tonight it will be trying to protect its record of not having allowed a rushing touchdown this season The 201 yards rushing last week by NC State senior tailback Vince Evans against East Carolina was more yards than he had gained in any of his three previous single seasons His 369 yards this season tops his previous three-year total of 325 yards tailback Mike Peacock running for 70 yards and converted tailback Mike Atkinson playing his first game at flanker and catching four passes for 53 yards Wake Forest at Richmond suc Richmond Stadium Richmond Time: 1:30 pm The Tomo: The Wake Forest Deacons (2 2) had a two-game winning streak broken last week in a 38-17 loss at Maryland but coach Al Groh seeks to better his fine non-ACC record of 10-5 The independent Richmond Spiders (2- 2) who had last week oft have beaten James Madison 43-12 lost to Bowling Green 55-28 beat Maine 30-13 and lost to Virginia Tech 21- 11 Wake Forest hopes to return to its stingy defensive style after giving up 484 yards to Maryland Before that the Deacons had given up an average of 232 yards per game but Richmond averages 393 yards per game including 209 passing The Spiders are yielding 305 yards per game including 197 rushing (47 per rush) The Game: The Deacons had to pass a lot at Maryland because they were behind but Groh prefers to establish the run Tailback Michael Ramseur averaging 123 yards per game rushing is expected to be close to full strength after being hampered last week by a hip bruise Fullback Topper Clemons is averaging 63 yards per game and 47 per carry Quarterback Foy White of Charlotte will start his second straight game after throwing for 214 yards at Maryland Richmond has averaged only 39 per rush and against the Deacons probably will have to pass well to spread the defense for the run East Carolina at Pittsburgh sus: Pitt Stadium Pittsburgh Time: 12:20 pm The Teams: Who would have thought these teams would enter their game with a combined record of 1-8 with their only victory against a IAA program in its third year? The East Carolina Pirates (1-4) own that single win over Georgia Southern 34-27 Last season East Carolina was 8-3 and the Pittsburgh Panthers currently 0-4 were 8-3-1 The problem for the Pirates is that times have changed more for them than for Pitt which has been favored by as much as 15 points East Carolina's losses have been to Florida State 48-17 Temple 17-0 Central Michigan 17-12 and NC State 31-22 The Panthers have lost to Brigham Young 20-14 Oklahoma 42-10 Temple 13-12 and West Virginia 28-10 Pitt has suffered from nagging injuries to several offensive regulars including a sprained ankle by quarterback John Congemi The Game: East Carolina has improved on offense the past two games Coach Ed Emory seems to have found a regular quarterback in sophomore Darrell Speed who has completed 28 of 55 passes (51) for 349 yards three touchdowns and three interceptions In last week's loss to NC State tailback Tony Baker who had rushed for 125 yards in the first tour games ran for 120 on 20 carries Baker had been slowed by injury Alas the Pirates aren't getting better on defense being outgained 436- 308 in total offense Including 212-128 passing and 224-180 rushing Pittsburgh coach Foge Fazio said his team has committed mental mistakes the past two games that weren't present in the first two He is encouraged by Congemi's improving health and the rushing of tailback Charles Gladman who ran for 98 yards and Pitt's only touchdown against West Virginia The Citadel at Davidson Site: Richardson Field Davidson Time: 2 pm II The Teams: The Citadel Bulldogs (0-1 Southern Conference 1-3 overall) own the only victory between these two teams having beaten NAIA foe Presbyterian 23-6 in their second game The Bulldogs have lost to South Carolina 31-24 Georgia 'Tech 48-3 and East Tennessee 16-6 The Davidson Wildcats (0-2 0-4) have been competitive since their opening loss to Western Carolina 45-12 but have lost to NAIA teams Guilford 27-12 and Newberry 28- 14 and to Pennsylvania 19-14 The game will count in the Southern standings for Davidson but will not count for The Citadel because Davidson does not play the minimum five league opponents The Game: Davidson was encouraged by its showing last week at Pennsylvania when it had a season-high 358 yards and led 14-13 until a 68-yard punt return set up the winning touchdown with 1:30 to play It was the third game in which returns have beaten Davidson The Wildcats' three leading rushers all have good averages per carry: fullbacks Horace Manor (44) and Mike Longmire (45) and halfback David Turner (43) The Citadel quarterback Robert Hill averages 152 yards per game passing and his 21 career touchdown passes are tour shy of the school record SC State at Johnson Smith Sits: Memorial Stadium Charlotte Time: 7:30 pm The Teams: The Johnson Smith Golden Tiger-Tar Heel Game Has New Importance Bulls (1-3) will be playing the ghost of Alcorn State tonight when they go against the SC State Bulldogs (2-3) That's because the Bulldogs often have taken out their wrath on Smith the week after being beaten by Alcorn In 1981 the Braves beat SC State on a 52-yard pass play as time expired: next week the Bulldogs routed the Bulls 82-0 In 1983 and 1979 SC State lost to Alcorn the week before thumping Smith That's part of the story The other part is that it hasn't made much difference what the Bulldogs have done against the Braves The Bulls have followed Alcorn on the Bulldogs' schedule every season since 1974 SC State is 5-0 against Smith after losing to or tying Alcorn end 6-0 against the Bulls after beating the Braves All that to set up this: Last week Alcorn State ripped the Bulldogs 41-7 Tonight its Bulldogs vs Golden Bulls The Glamc SC State should be much too powerful for the young
