-D-4 The Sacramento Bee Final Tuesday March 21 1989 TELEVISION A shaky Channel 13 may finally be on steady ground Nrit I NN i 1 c' l''''' 1-'1: BOB WISEHART TV Columnist creative services director too Cyndie Reynolds from WDZI-TV in Miami Finally Mori le reached to another continent to grab Kurt Eichsteadt in Indonesia where he'd gone to help start a new national TV network The respected Eichsteadt who'll start next month will be the station's program director a position he held at both Channels 3 and 10 The most visible part of any network affiliate is news especially the anchor team and it's routine for a new man at the top to deny any plan to make changes there until the moment he makes them That kind of swift and unexpected change quickly establishes that things are different now though it's easily overdone One of the first things Pfeiffer did at Channel 13 was fire Susan Blake which he later admitted was a mistake Blake of course is now at Channel 10 Action for action's sake is a "ridiculous way to run a television station or anything" scoffed Fiorile Handicapped by the Narragansett tight-fistedness "I don't think our people have had a chance to show what they can do" 4 41' 1 4 1 1 1 r4 4 14 6 4:4 4 4 It 1 I if I i e' 'V 'It fi 11 i It 0 5 4'' kr i-Z 7 6 4 1 1 I i 1 A 4 4t viewers are counted as accurately as possible to set advertising rates front-running Channel 3 had its strongest ratings performance in a long time Channel 3 pulled off a difficult feat by making wide-ranging changes in its news personnel without suffering any ratings damage which reinforces the notion that Sacramento TV isn't personality-driven Change is usually an anathema to the leading TV station For Channel 13 the good news is that for the first time in years it has an owner with deep pockets Anchor Media owns TV stations in Sacramento Asheville and Columbus Ohio plus six radio stations in Dallas Albuquerque NM and Las Vegas Nev With headquarters in St Petersburg Fla it's an affiliate company of the Robert Bass Group Inc Bass is a Texas billionaire whose local holdings include almost 2000 acres in Roseville bought last year for $45 million He also agreed to buy the ailing Stockton-based American Savings and Loan investing $550 million in the process Florae cautioned that Bass isn't involved in the broadcasting operation which is run by Alan Henry Anchor Media's chairman and chief executive officer a way of making the point that there's a TV pro at the top It's impossible to tell how the scenario will play out There are so many intangibles even Mori le can't know for sure But for now at least he's making the right sounds It's been a long time since there was any noise at all from Channel 13 IN THE TWO months since Mike Florae took over a TV station reeling being bought and sold so often it resembled a used car nobody can accuse the Channel 13 general manager of sloth After a dizning flurry of firing and hiring Flohle reassembled his management team took the first steps to get the station's 159 employes out of the cramped facility on Arden Way and saw his company the AnchorMedia Broadcast Co sue the former owner The suit filed March 9 in Superior Court charges Narragansett Capital Inc former general manager Ed Pfeiffer and former sales manager Christopher Pike with 'fraud conspiracy and breach of contract" and accuses Narragansett of withholding information and stealing key employees Pfeiffer and Pike couldn't be reached for comment AnchorMedia bought Channel 13 from Narragansett for $162 million only two years after Narragansett itself bought the station for S104 million It as the fourth time Channel 13 had been sold in this decade Narragansett and Pfeiffer who had a small piece of the station were the broadcasters from hell Narraoansett's history is that it buys and holds TV stations long enough to make a lot of money on a sale and spends as little as possible in the meantime As a rival broadcaster said "Narragan sett stripped the station The surprise isn't that Channel 13 has problems it's that they're not worse Fiorile who came to Sacramento from the Anchor Media station in Asheville NC understated the case when he said I think that we (Channel 13) haven't been very good citizens We intend to get better" Several years ago the owner prior to Narragansett Outlet Communications bought land in Natomas for a new facility Knowing it wasn't going to be around very long had nothing to lose and profit to gain Narragansett sold the land Florile is dickering for a parcel of land in West Sacramento Too under Narragansett Channel 13 was rarely a serious player in program acquisition and news director Bart Feder had to make do with a lesser budget and staff than his rivals Channels 3 and 10 Fiorile's orientation is local he once ran the sales operation at Channel 10 and he has tended to hire people with Sacramento experience Brad Thomas who served as the Channel 13 news assignment editor in 1979 and again in 1984 recently returned for a third time There's a new CHANGES WILL come because change is the nature of TV But Horne wants to wait and see Besides Fiorile's research tells him Sacramento isn't a personality-driven TV market anyway Viewers here tend to watch stations not people so a raid on another station wouldn't do any good Anchor Media has its work cut out for it and Mori le knows it In February when 4 KOVR general manager Mike Rod le says of his station "I think that we haven't been very good citizens We intend to get better" EVENING Gregory Peck's film career honored in gala celebration TUNE IN TONIGHT By Jon Burlingame man It cost a then-phenomenal $ti million to make This showing includes a new score commissioned by the BBC ftIM Series notes iva liv 'qua I 6:00 li 6:30 greater honor in the movie industry: The American Film Institute's Life Achievement Award presented for "a fundamental contribution to the art of film in America" This year's recipient actor Gregory Peck accepted this career accolade before a black-tie audience in Beverly Hills on March 9 Highlights from that event are condensed into "The I7th Annual API Life Achievement Award: A Salute to
