Schools i Impressions of America: I Big cars and hamburgers To 12 German exchange students American cars are awesome but its teenagers like the same music and wear the same clothes Host Tony Hernandez Spanish words from his host 15 to 17 traveled with two teachers from the Kooperative Gesamtschule in Neustadt am Rubenberge in northern West Germany to spend three weeks going to Coral Gables High School part of new exchange program initiated by Daniel Blackmon the German teacher at Gables High for the past seven years In August 10 Gables High students will travel to Germany thought this program would be a good opportunity for the students to make friendships with people from other countries and for us to establish a real partnership between the school and the Blackmon said It also gives his students and those in the German Club he sponsors a chance to hear an authentic German accent learn to appreciate the language and increase their interest in it Each German student in the program sponsored by the German American Partnership Program is assigned to a host American family Bernd Krumsieck one of the two German teachers said they had been planning the program for almost a year and so far it has worked very well think (the students are learning a lot and all of them are really happy with their host Krumsieck families help them understand many customs and take them to different Some favorite activities for the German students are the Gables choir orchestra and sports family the Hernandezes And Tony Hernandez 15 is thrilled with his new friends this is a cross-section of the typical German students I think they're all he said the type of kids every mother would like to "You get to know people for who they are We usually tend to think of them as the foreigners but when you get to know them just like Tony and Franz-Peter have become close friends They stay up at night and discuss politics and the different things done in their past Tony has only one criticism of the program: "1 just wish they would be here for a longer period of School Scone Language school opens Saturday -Nihongo Gakko the Japanese language school is having its formal opening at 10 am Saturday at the David Fairchild Elementary 5757 SW 45th St The school which so far has an enrollment of 40 students will host various dignitaries as well as conduct some classes on its first school day The Consul General of Japan of the Southeastern United States will come from Atlanta Representatives of the State of Florida parents and teachers also will attend The school will conduct two courses one for native speaking children on language grammar and writing and the other for non-native speakers on conversational Japanese and Japanese culture ANNE RODRIGUEZ examination
