4 Progragg-Bullatln, Pomona, Calif. Sunday Morning, Doc. 34, 1941 Page 3, See. 3 Chargers, Oilers in Title Clash 34,500 Expected for AFL Showdown 0 0 0 Nb ers back to the heights they achieved earlier in the year when they won 15 games (11 league) in a row. In their last three outings, the Chargers lost to Houston, 33-13, whipped Buffalo, 28-10, and were whitewashed by Boston, 41-0.

Kemp has passed 364 times, completing 165 for 2,686 yards and 15 touchdowns. Dave Kocourek, with 55 receptions for 1,045 yards, and Don Norton, with 47 catches for 816 yards, have been the primary targets. Paul Lowe, one of the games finest running halfbacks, is the Chargers leading ground gainer, having amassed 767 yards in 175 carries during the regular season. The Chargers main hope lies in their heralded, defense, the stingiest and biggest in football. The "Fearsome Foursome and the "Seven Pirates set a new AFL record in total yards allowed (3,718) in 1961, and, in addition, established an all-time standard for passes SAN DIEGO The Western Division champion San Diego Chargers and the Eastern Division champion and defending American Football League champion Houston Oilers meet in the AFLs second championship game, today Balboa Stadium.

Kick-off time is 1:30 p.m., with a capacity crowd of 34,500 anticipated. San Diego, which finished its season with an imposing 12-2 record, will be up gainst a red-hot band of Oilers, for the Houstonians have rolled up nine consecutive victories by overwhelming margins. On the year, the Oilers (10-3-1) have scored an amazing 513 points as compared to the oppositions 242 points. The Chargers put 396 points on the scoreboard, while holding their opponents to 219 points. Normally, the Chargers would be a mortal lock to win the title titanic, for, in all eight previous meetings be- intercepted, yards gained in-terceptions and touchdowns derived via aerial thievery.

The Chargers thefted 49 passes for 929 yards and nine touchdowns. Leading bandit is Charlie McNeil with nine Interceptions for 349 yards. Bob Zeman grabbed off eight for 89 yards and Dick Harris seven for 140 yards as other major contributors to the Chargers crusade on the football field, only for crime. Earl Faison (6-5, 256), Bill Hudson (6-5, 277), Ernie Ladd (6-9, 317) and Ron Nery (6-6, 244) are charter members of the "Fearsome Foursome. It seems that the old adage of throwing out past performance charts when Houston and San Diego get together should apply today especially when the money is on the line, as it is Dec.

24. ABC will televise the con- test nationally beginning at I 1:15 p.m. on 7. I tween these two titans, the home team has come out victorious. The Chargers hojd a series margin of 5-3, but came out on thd short end of a 24-16 count in the first AFL title game Jan.

1. How to stop the steamrolling Oilers is the main concern of Charger coach Sid Gillman. The Oilers have the No. 1 passer in the league in George Blanda, who has completed 187 of 363 passes for 3,340 yards and 36' touchdowns. In addition, Blanda has scored 112 points.

Too, Houston head man Wally Lemm has at his disposal the leagues top rusher in Billy Cannon, who gained 948 yards in 200 overland trips. Also, the Oilers have outstanding receivers in Charlie Hennigan, Bill Groman, WillarA Dewveall, Bob White, Bob McLeod not to mention the versatile Cannon. Most observers forecast a battle of the Easts high-powered offense against a heavy yet mobile Western defense. In addition to Olsen, the West line contains Utah States Clark Miller, a 250-pounder, and three fellows at 240 Guy Reese of Southern Methodist, Bobby Plummer of Texas Christian and John Meyers of Washington. Both East quarterbacks, Gabriel and Ron Miller of Wisconsin, proved adept passers in their collegiate careers.

Miller ranked second nationally for 1961 and Gabriel third. Still Kuharich may depend more on his running game while the West goes more to the airways. In addition to Hadl, a good runner and passer, Owens has another of a similar mould in Kermit Jorgensen of Washington plus a top passer in Washington States Mel Melin. Speedy pass receivers for the West include Mack Burton and Oscar Donahue of San Jose State, Buddy lies of TCU, Bobby Lane of Baylor and Kent Petersen of Oregon. When anybody tells Kuharich that his East squad should be the heavy favorite, he replies, "Remember 1952? That was the year the West with such stars as Hugh Me-Elhenny, Ed Brown, Gino Mar-chetti, Ollie Matson and Frank Gifford lost to an underdog East team 21-20.

Since it started in 1926, the East-West game has contributed $4 million to the hospital. A crowd of 59,000 will watch the two all-star teams coached by Notre Dame's Joe Kuha-rich and Washingtons Jim Owens with other spectators viewing via nationwide television (NBC). The kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m., PST. Kuharichs dream backfield includes Davis, the Syracuse All America halfback and Ileisman Trophy winner; quarterback Gabriel of North Carolina State, and fullback Bob Ferguson of Ohio State.
