It is located at 435 Batelaan, just off Sunset Avenue south of the San Bernardino Freeway. The new store occupies square feet and is constructed of guillotined concrete brick reminiscent of the adobe brick used in early California structures. Large ceramic panels dramatize the classic simplicity of the exterior.

Interiors are air conditioned, designed for maximum customer comfort and convenience in pleasant, well appointed surroundings. Colorful contemporary panels and murals, depicting life during the days of the California Dons, highlight focal points inside the store, which features medium to higher priced apparel for men, women and boys. "The opening of our West Covina store is but one of the many ways we are celebrating our centennial of service to the Southland, said Fred B. Iluesman, president of Desmonds. Huesman said that another Desmonds store opens also tomorrow in Sherman Oaks. Still another shop opens in East Whittier in October. The Burke, Kober and Nicolais architectural firm designed the West Covina store. Los Angeles was little more than a sleepy pueblo when Daniel Desmond opened his first store in 1862. It a stocked with wide-brimmed sombreros, bowlers and tall beaver toppers sailed around Cape Horn on clipper ships.

Today, 100 years later, Desmonds stores are located in downtown Los Angeles, Wil-shire Miracle Mile, Westwood Village, Crenshaw Center, Pasadena, Long Beach, Santa Ana and Palm Springs. The West Covina store is No. 11. City Workers To Award Scholarships The 'City of Pomona Employes Association announces it will award $50 scholarships to three graduating Pomona high school seniors this term. Bob Summers, president, said in future years the employes association fund will providq four scholarships, one each for a graduating senior from Pomona, Ganesha and the new Garey High School, and one for a boy or girl from either Pomona Catholic High School.

Beginning next year there will be graduating classes from Pomona Catholic Girls High School in Pomona and Pomona Catholic Boys High School in La Verne. Summers said the $50 will be paid to the college in which the winner registers, to apply toward tuition or other necessary expenses. Selection will be made on the basis of ability, sincerity of purpose, need and personal qualifications. Other things being equal, preference will be given to a child of an employe of the City of Pomona. To be considered, seniors must be residents of the City of Pomona.

Candidates will be chosen by the scholarship committee of each participating school. Paul Parker Is chairman of the employes association committee.
