The Miami Wednesday April 6 19S1 TO-Badio 7C nighttime soap operas run out of new episodes vV It 4 I i I fcf i By GARY DEEB Spi ctut to The Herald For the last few weeks fans of two CBS nighttime soap operas Crest" and have been bitterly disappointed by the disappearance of both programs Even though each show is a continuing serial that keeps viewers hanging from week to week the network simply has run out of first-run installments and be televising any new episodes till next September "Falcon Crest" already is off the CBS Friday-night schedule replaced by a new Ralph Waite detective series called and has vanished from its Thursday-night slot giving way to the remaining episodes of an already canceled program called Witch" Later this spring in May or June will return to Friday nights but only in rerun form Similarly probably will return to Thursday nights but again only in a series of repeats All weekly prime-time network programs these days produce only 22 to 24 episodes each season the nighttime soaps are no different But most successful programs try to save up a few of those new installments for telecast in late April and early May But with "Falcon and CBS exhausted its supply of new episodes by early March Instead of televising an occasional rerun and allowing few preemptions in order to stretch out the season somewhat CBS simply played its and segments week after week until the season finales were telecast several weeks ago That means that millions of loyal viewers will have to wait six months for the next first-run episode of either show The only people delighted
