i miigimyinfriqpi ig Mrfjiiiirifr'Haiftriti rtf-liniariT j-4-1 rrrnir I EdigSi School The Miami Herald Tuesday April 26 1983 4D Another sports boss called Kozelle i gibility and fair play set by the FHSAA by-laws not a job for someone not inclined to put in long days behind a desk on the phone and in meetings very happy about my said Rozelle who is not related to his counterpart in the NFL Pete Rozelle easy to get depressed Fortunately I have a very good Board of Directors helping me but sometimes there enough hours in a for some cases that he has argued against He felt for Edison Terry Andrews who spent time in jail then tried to play basketball and was ruled ineligible because he was too old Andrews went to court two seasons ago and was able to play aided by court injunctions All told the FHSAA has gone to court 15 times the last two years and has ultimat-ley won every case (some on appeal) except the 44-player roster limit in state football playoffs that was challenged by Killian during the 1981-82 season That case is still pending in the Florida Supreme Court Rozelle is hopeful that the Supreme Court rules in the favor in that case and recommends that coaches and schools legally challenge the organization they are members of walked in the shoes of coaches and I hold them in high regard Rozelle said think anyone influences a kid more than a coach Sometimes our rulings conflict with the feelings of coaches but By GEORGE DIAZ Herald Spores Wrifo Fred Rozelle quite look the part of The Enforcer Mild-mannered glasses A 56-year-old family man with a wife and three kids But make no mistake when the last word is said regarding important decisions I about high school ath- 1 letics ears are tuned to Fred Rozelle -wi He is the executive secretary of the Flori- vwiy da High School Activi ties Association the governing body of high school athletics in the state From his office in Gainesville Rozelle oversees a network of schools 558 strong supervises 18 sports and schedules state tournaments for most of them and enforces the standards of eli my job is to enforce the bylaws of the association and to promote fair competition Sometimes that puts me on the other side of the Rozelle graduated from Lake City Columbia High School in 1945 He left the school as the president of the student body as an All-State and All-Southern halfback and with a scholarship to Florida in hand After graduating from Florida where he played linebacker Rozelle went to Jacksonville Jackson in 1950 At Jackson he coached the basketball team and was a defensive football coach In 1954 he moved to St Petersburg High as head football coach and athletic director That season Rozelle gave an energetic Florida graduate his first coaching job That was Doug Dickey who would later become head coach at Florida Nine years later his next job would lead Rozelle into administration as the Pinellas County Athletic Director for a year and a half He served as principal of two high schools one for eight and one for four years before becoming an area supervisor in Pinellas County When Floyd Lay decided to retire after a strong 17-year reign as FHSAA executive secretary Rozelle put in his application He took over on Sept 6 1S80 applied along with other people for the Rozelle said discussed the matter with Mr Lay and I was his choice That of course flattered me "This job has quite a heritage Mr Lay set an extremely high standard for the association and left it in real good shape At first frankly it was scary Now I feel more comfortable because I know more about my Rozelle has yet to entertain thoughts of retirement but when the day comes he has the perfect plan I tell you Rozelle said got a little condo on Treasure Island in St Pete I seldom see it now but I know that it Is waiting for me When I go there and read the To offset the load Rozelle has a staff of five assistants to help with the "mountain of But the important decisions are always left to Rozelle: The kind that always seems to involve two parties and the kind that always seems to upset one of the parties involved There are fines reprimands and defending FHSAA decisions in the courtroom
