What round will he be selected in? How much will they offer? "I think I might go to school for a little while come home around 12 sit by the phone and watch TV" Oliver said "I'm just excited I just want to know what round I'm going to go in what team will pick me" It was different when Bob Oliver signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates in the early 1960s There was no draft "You were scouted and if they liked you they came to your place then you negotiated a contract" said Bob Oliver an eight-year veteran with four big-league teams "My opinion as a father I hope he goes in the first round But he'll go somewhere in the first rounds probably" The younger Oliver who possesses a curveball and slider to go along with his fastball is expected to be a high draft choice This despite the fact he played for Division II Rio Linda which went 17-16 overall and 8-6 in the Sierra Foothill League Oliver's numbers were what attracted a following of scouts The 6-foot-2 180-pounder's fast-ball was clocked as high as 92 mph this season and he was consistently in the mid to high 80s Oliver struck out 81 hitters in 46 innings and had an 077 earned-run average but his record was only 5-3 Two of those losses were to recently crowned Sac-Joaquin Section Division I North champion Christian Brothers in which Oliver pitched a three-hitter with 15 strikeouts and a five-hitter with 14 strikeouts "He's got a real good future" Phil-lies scout Joe Borich said "Ile's real smooth with his delivery and he's growing he's going to get stronger You got to look at him doA'n the road Right now he's got all the tools to be a very fine pitcher You've got to look at what he's going to come intoPorch feels the 17-year-old Oliver he won't turn 18 until Oct 6 meaning he could have started school a year later will get drafted "somewhere in the middle rounds maybe a little above" Bob Oliver has talked to representatives of most of the major leagues' 26 teams and has gotten nothing but favorable reviews on his son They rated him one of the best pitchers in Northern California even though he didn't get the press because he plays for a small school" Bob Oliver said "They tell me he acts like a professional right now They like that evidently" "I feel real good about the year I had" said Darren Oliver who batted 462 this season "I just hope I get drafted high" It's inevitable that Oliver will get a call By what team and in what round are the questions that will be answered when Oliver answers the phone today "If he decides to sign I think it'll be a great experience" Bob Oliver said "I'd like to see him play My wife wants to see him go to school" If Darren Oliver doesn't get the offer he feels he deserves his mother will get her wish Oliver has a full-ride scholarship waiting for him at Nevada-Las Vegas Ile is also looking hard at USC Today though Oliver's thoughts are on the draft and what that phone call will bring Ile knows one thing: The higher he gets picked the better his chances of getting a decent contract offer "You get a lot more money that's cne thing I know" Oliver said "I'm ping to try as hard as I can" e)445 741114401440" owN00106400 i FORK LIFT TIRES ir ''Y '3 W130 MOST ANY day with se mind none math or hist( Rather wl phone call? selected in? fer?
