mgftenwiywii The Miami Herald Friday Dec 16 1983 TU-Ccdlo 25E A celebration of life NBC cancels five adds six new shows ViQYJZblQZll By TOM SHALES Special to The Herald WASHINGTON When someone tells you going to raise your consciousness you have every right to be skeptical But sometimes television can do it painlessly and without preachments One such case is a remarkable syndicated show called Them a The program was created and is performed by seven clearly extraordinary women who have various physical disabilities They sing talk and even joke about their lots in life and the attitudes of people toward those considered As Jane Fonda says in an introduction to the program labels them but they buy that turned their disabilities around and taken is simplicity itself It was staged and shot in a studio The choreography some of it involving wheelchairs is not what you would call elaborate Songs and statements are made directly to the camera There are no sermons no whimpers Nor do the cast members try to make those without disabilities feel guilty Indeed they deal with the kind of reverse-guilt experienced in a song called You Wish You Could Be Disabled? They begin by singing I Am a Woman by completing the sentence first time I realized I was and by talking about being the kid none of the other kids wanted on their team at school But the approach throughout is positive buoyant and never strident Unfortunately the program is only half an hour long just as settling into it it ends obviously because some TV producer thought the audience would grow restless Embassy Television is planning to put it into syndication Victoria Ann-Lewis who developed the show at a workshop sponsored by the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles had polio sensitivity
