McMillan, a junior with the ability to make opposing tacklers I a a with his speed, Devils. They drove to the Bonita 39 and Zeller bioke loose again to score but the TD was failed back because of a penalty, Evtn this didn't slow tiie inspired Devils.

Pomona bounced back again to the Bonita 40 to set the stage for the play of the night. With a fourth and five situation on the 40, McMillan elected to go for the first down and came up with a touchdown as he pulled a beautiful bootleg play and rambled down the right sideline to score. Bonita now was behind by two touchdowns, 31-19, but the Bearcats still didn't give up hope. They were halted, however, on their own 38 with a fourth and 25 situation. It was at this point that the Bearcats were forced to punt for the second time and Saladino came roaring through to block Thomas' boot.

The Red Devils and Bearcats resembled two hard punching heavyweight fighters. They slugged it out toe to toe, both trying to land the big knockout punch.

Bonita behind the passing of quarterback Gary Bowling receiver of end Randy Leonard, and running of halfbacks John Moore and Larry Sapp and fullback Ron Thomas had its top offensive game In five starts. The Bearcats scored two more points than they had accounted for In their four nonleague games. The final statistics for the two teams almost were Identical Pomona racked up 373 yards and 18 first downs while Bonita had 19 first downs and 372 yards. The two teams' ability to move against each other was illustrated In the punting department. Pomona punted but once while Bonita went with the punt twice, one being on ra key play.

After a rocky start which saw the Bearcats fumble twice and the Red Devils once in the opening minutes of the game, the two teams took scoring in the first half with Pomona scoring first and holding a 19-13 lead at halftime. Coach Bcrnie Hills fighting Bearcats drove 83 yards in 11 plays midway through the third quarter to tie the game at 19-19 and an upset appeared in tjie making. Moore scored the tying touchdown In the third quarter from the five yard line. The big gainer In the drive was a 33-yard pass from Bowling to Sapp, a sophomore with real potential. Tackle Jim Saladino, In top form again, blocked Thomas' PAT attempt Saladino had blocked Thomas try for the extra point after the Bearcats first touchdown and also blocked Bonitas second punt.

With the score tied at 19-19 and the Bearcats throating to spoil the Devils 1959 league debut, Pomona started to click under pressure and scored three times in a row' to pull out of danger. Fomona drove 68 yards In five plays to pull ahead 25-19. McMillan fired a 39-yard pass to Brown to move the ball from the 50 to the 11, where Zeller scored his second TD. Bonita battled desperately to tie the game again but their drive stopped on the Pomona 22-yard line as little Lee Russo tackled Moore Inches short of a first down on a fourth and two situation. Pomonas ability to halt the Bearcats seemed to fire the 38-26 Eleven Corona terccpted a pass and took over on their own 45.

Chino was plagued by four fumbles. The Cow bov fumbled on cl first play from scrimmage. Corona recovered the bobble on the Chino 23 but the play was nullified by a penalty. Strona, the Cowboy's star back, carried the ball but six times due to a shoulder in jury. Fullback Sid Hopkins and halfback Phil Buford, two regulars, missed the game with injuries. Halfback Ed Curtis took up the slack In the Cowboy running attack as he racked up 90 yards In nine carries. Corona, which lost to Chino 7-0 last year, put up a strong effort against the Cowboys but couldn't hit paydirt after Its opening drive. The Panthers took to the air in the second half with Knabe doing most of the tossing but the Cowboy defense got tougher with the pressure.

Sacs three and three-tenth mile course. The Sagehcns won 26-29, although the Stags actually forfeit the match, as they did not have enough competitois. CMCs Ed Laughton and Roger Rasmussen finished first and second with Pomonas Rudy Singer third. Laughtons winning time was 18:46. In the fresh competition no official score was kept with neither school having an official team.

CHUCK DRESSEN new Milwaukee skipper Dressen New Brave Manager MILWAUKEE, Wis. CP) Charley (Chuck) Dressen, a veteran field boss with two National League championships, is the new Milwaukee Braves manager. The 61-year-old Dressen was signed to a two-year contract Friday night at a jneeting with Milwaukee owner Lou Penni, Executive Vice President Birdie Tebhptts, and General Manager John Mcllale in Chicago. The signing of Dressen, coach with the Los Angeles Dodgers for the past two seasons, was announced sev-eral hours after The Associated Press reported exclusively that he was the choice to succeed Fred Haney, who resigned three weeks ago. Terms of the contract were not divulged.

Dressen, who piloted the Brooklyn Dodgers to championships in 1952 and 1953, was the choice of Perini after Teb-betts reportedly stood fast in his desire to remain In the front office. Tcbbetts, who gave up the managership of the Cincinnati Reds to join the brass in the Milwaukee front office, was considered the No. 1 selection by Perini. However, with the refusal of Tebbetts to don a uniform, the Braves turned to Dressen, a member of the same baseball breed, Dressen, like Tebbetts, is known for his spirited and daring play in far contrast to Haney, who managed his teams cautiously and conservatively. When phoned by Perini, General Manager Buzzy Ba-vasi of the Dodgers said in a statement that the club "reluctantly consented release Dressen as a coach.

I wish we had been given a little more notice by Milwaukee, Bavasi said. Nevertheless, we wish Charley the best. Dressen, a former third baseman for the Reds and New York Giants from 1923 through 1933, Is a seasoned manager and coach both in the big time and the high minor native of Decatur, III, he has been known as one of baseballs top sign-stealers during his lengthy career on the field. Under his leadership, the Dodgers, then In Brooklyn, won the National League championship in 1952 and 1953 after his first Brooklyn club lost the pennant in a playoff in 1951 to the Giants on Bobby Thomsons famed home run. However, both his championship teams lost In the World Series to the New York Yankees.

At the close of the 1953 season, Dressen resigned when Dodger President Walter OMalley refused him a two-year ntract. Dr en returned to the Pacific Coast League as manager of the Oakland club but bounced back the following year to assume the reins of the Washington Senators. Purcell Dan- Cowboy CORONA Chino and Cor- ona opened Tri-County League play in rock and sock fashion here Friday night as the Cow boys scored a 7-6 victory. Quarterback Ruben Lara's successful conversion after the Cow boys second quarter touchdown proved the margin of victory. Corona scored in the first quarter as it drove 55 yards "In 11 plays the initial time it got the ball. Quarterback Wayne Knabe scored the TD from a yard out. Manuel Chavira and Ralph Appier each ripped off 11-yard runs to spice the TD drive.

Chavira gave the Cowboys trouble all night long as he rolled up 85 yards in 17 carries. Stan Mahans kick was wide on the extra point shot but the lone point didnt seem too important at the time. It picked up importance, however, as the game went on and finally spelled defeat for the Panthers. Coronas touchdown drive started after the Panthers in Waves the score with quarterback Karl Finch scoring on a one-yard sneak. The Broncos crossed the Waves goal three times in the second stanza to put the contest on Ice.

Fullback Gary Burnett got the Broncos go-ahead tally with another one-yard plunge. Roger Folsom added six more points on a four-yard scoring run later In the quarter. Just before the half Finch scored his second touchdown of the night on a six yard run to give Poly a comfortable 24-6 intermission lead. During the first half Pep perdine gained only 10 net yards rushing, while Cal Poly had the ball for 43 offensive plays. Charley Bacon got loose for a 56-yard ramble in the third period to increase Polys lead to 30-6.

Fepperdine added eight points in the final quarter, but by this time Poly was coasting and Bronco reserves were getting their chance. Burnett led the Broncs rushing with 81 yards in 14 carries for a six yard average, Bacon had 73 yards. Cal Poly faces its toughest battle since its loss to Sun FrancDco State Saturday night when it meets Long Bench State at Long Beach. Zeller scored his first TD late in the first quarter on a thrilling 29-yard run. Pomona Coach Don Green was pleased to come out ahead of the Bearcats. Those guys are rough, Green said, and they will win a couple before this thing is over. Bearcat Coach Hill said he felt Bowling performed better because he didnt have to worry about play-calling. We sent most of the plays In, said Hill, and I think it took a lot of pressure off Gary and helped him play better." Bowling had called the plays in the nonleague games.

Although the fans didn't realize it, Brown was out of position when he caught Pomonas final TD pass. On that play, Green said, Brown isnt even supposed to be near the ball. McMillan faded back and tossed a long pass, which Brown hauled in on the goal line for Pomonas final TD. Bonita, with time against a possible victory, started the games final TD drive on its own 37 and scored in five plays as Moore bolted over from the three. The final gun sounded as Moore scored. The big play In the drive was a 37-yard pass play from Bowling to Leonard. Bowling and Leonard kept the Bearcats moving in the first half.

They hooked up on a 23-yard pass play on Bonitas first touchdown and a 16-yard pass play on the Bearcats second TD drive. Thomas scored Bonitas first TD from the two after a 63-yard drive and Sapp got the second after a 58-yard march. Bowling completed two other passes to Leonard in the first 12th Strt, So. of Foothill, Mountain Monty Outstanding Value! The Broncos of Cal Poly are running wild. Coach Don Warhursts battlers put on a big offensive show for the large crowd, as Poly rolled up 306 yards rush- Charter Oak Downs Amat COVINA Charter Oak High broke a tight game wide open with two touchdowns In the fourth quarter as the Lancers thumped Bishop Amat High 27-12 at Covina High here Friday night. Halfback Ed Blecksmith was the Lancer hero with three touchdowns, including the two in the final period. Blecksmith had scoring jaunts of 71, 10 and 21 yards for an outstanding performance. Vince Forslian scored Charter Oak's first touch down on a 46-yard run in the lirst quarter, hut Bishop Amat came hack with a pair of tallies to trail the lancers 13-13 at halftime. Block smiths 71 yard run accounted for Charter Oak's Intermission lead.

After a scoreless third quarter the speedy halfback hit pay dirt twice in the final 12 minutes. The last TD came on a pltchout from Gil Lewis, i who had gained 10 yards, with Blecksmith doing the remaining 21 yards for the score. The Giant varsity scored an 18-45 win and the JV's were a 13-81 winner. Howard Grohe won the varsity race in a time of 8:37, while John Castaneda (2), Bill Gavin (4), Jarrett Lake (5) and Dennis Langford (6) were the other top giant finishers. In thp JV competition Gane-sluts Dave McCarthy took first place in the time of 9:14. Ganesha meets Covina High at Covina Tuesday.
